Women are a huge market in the game industry. I was at a GDC summit where they said that it’s around 30% now, with numbers in the growth markets closer to even (mobile/social). Companies that do not take them seriously will be very sorry as the market expands and the demo shifts.
There’s a reason that even complicated mobile/social games don’t feature “slutty ho-bags gettin’ what they deserve, yo”, and that’s not because of “white knighting” or “political correctness run amok”, it’s because market research shows that women are less likely to purchase games that objectify and degrade women.
Therefore, what the market actually wants is now known by those companies that are making money on the new platforms, and catering to slavering teenage boys ain’t it. Developers can make games for that market, but soon enough, that’ll be as niche as making turn based wargames was 10 years ago.

But these devs are in the business of making money so they will appeal to the market that will make them the most money, and they will make design choices that reflect this. Gaming is by large a male domain, a genre if you will so it doesnt make sense to complain about the portrayal of women in a genre and demographic that is mainly aimed towards men. This would be like a country fan coming into a heavy metal concert and saying"this isnt country enough"and expecting the entire concert to adapt to their personal taste…its in other words its a giant fuck you and basically telling someone"you dont get to like this, ill tell you what you should be liking or not".
Not to mention this argument about female objectification is disgustingly hypocritical and a gaze into typical feminist tunnel vision. For example whenever a genre is unapologetically female oriented no one ever complains or makes note about the portrayals or subjects within that material, in fact anything that is aimed towards women directly almost never receives heavy criticism about its portrayals or subject matter. Yet when something is directly aimed at a male audience with portrayals and content that would appeal most to men…suddenly these massive charges of sexism,objectification and inherent "hatred towards(insert group here)"arise. Its a coin with only 1 side, and the fact that these women are taking issue with how women are portrayed in materials that mostly see a male audience to begin with just shows how self centered and bias these women/critics really are.
When we have handsome male characters with perfect bodies on display in female centered materials its never objectification or sexualization, yet when the opposite is in effect it suddenly becomes a issue that needs to be corrected…like WTF kind of sexist bias is that. The worst part however is that these type of arguments never leave a clear vision on the solution but they leave a clear indication on how men should behave and think which in reality is what this whole thing is really about. lts really nothing more then a attempt to edit and control male behavior to the discretion of some egocentric girl whom clearly is so insecure she feels the need to make a public awareness effort so that fictional female characters dont upset her easily offended nature…even when most of these fictional characters are being created for a demographic she isnt included in.
In many ways women willingly “objectify” themselves and would have it no other way. Lot of double standards abound. Whatever.
Funnily, the reason I decided to post about this was because it came up in discussing the size of the Skullgirls community, and it came up whether the game would more likely attract or drive away women. They’re kind of tired of sexism discussion over there though, so it seemed worth posting after Ben brought up the project.
Sexism is never going away.

The sooner people realize that the better. No I don’t mean we shouldn’t have laws to protect people, it’s just that petty talk of discrimination undermines actual physical discrimination.

Trends. There are a wider variety of male characters, from sex objects to role models to background scenery. While there are examples of female characters that fit all categories, the ratio of sex object to role model is very unbalanced compared to male characters.

Power delta. Men have more power in our society, and views of women historically have been limited to roles that are predicated on their attractiveness to men and their ability to produce offspring. Reducing a male to a sex object in a piece of art does not have the same cultural context as reducing a women, just like making fun of a white guy for being white does not have the same historical context as belittling a black person for being black. It may not be 100% textbook fair, but these things are different.

I’ve noticed this too, and not just in games. The degree to which some companies are willing to use scantily clad women in quasi-sexual situations in their advertising can be downright insulting. Sometimes it’s so clumsy, no elegance whatsoever, as if companies think that young adult males are so stupid and gullible that they’ll buy anything as long as there’s a pair of tits next to it. That just makes me resolve not to buy whatever it is.
That isn’t to say that every advertisement that utilizes sex is a part of that insult, but come on. At least be creative with it.
I sent a link of this to a guy who was criticizing Kotaku for running an article on feminism (it was about the threats) and not feminist critical theory. He said he’d be interested if she was an academic and not a pop culture critic.
