Honestly though, that blog post kind of bugs me, because Fitzgerald specifically makes the central point ‘I got paid work for this, isn’t that great?!?!’ It makes it come across as really self-serving.
Edit: About men, in general men are usually supposed to be identified with in a fantasy-fulfillment role (or as bizarre joke/parodies like Rufus or Voldo), so its a slightly different thing.
As an example, Nakoruru or Charlotte in Samurai Shodown are supposed to be nice to look at, but they’re not designed like Mai “Me bouncy!” Shiranui. The former are ‘attractive’ the latter is ‘objectified’.
It should be common sense that the game industry is disproportionate in their employment of women. Especially when most characters are men, and voiced by men with females playing smaller roles creating a pay gap. And then when women characters are designed, a female VAs or female motion capture actresses (I guess?) gets paid and then shit likes this happen lol.
Then you create a ripple effect where the whoever gets a bad rep, doesn’t take that chance again and keeps it safe, and then women working in the gaming industry are setback. Back to doing little roles because no one wants to take a chance in fear of becoming the boogie man on whatever gaming site.
If I can fap to all 3 with the same amount of ease, does that make them “objectified”?
Remember also that this will go beyond how a character looks. She has already listed a couple of the no-doubt myriad of ‘tropes’ she will discuss. “Space Temptress”, “Demon Seductress”,“Zany, Elfin Cartoon Girl.” Did you write a female character who is a ruthless business woman with a heart of gold? Congrats patriarchal shitstain, you are now proliferating the “Ruthless Businesswoman with a Heart of Gold” trope/stereotype/generalization/evil thing. Literally any female character with any easily identifiable traits(that are not feminist approved) will be targeted. Giving intellectual credence to this sort of thinking borders on insane.
Oh. This is another overblown, attention-whorish project masquerading as actual feminism by this woman. Shame, especially since there are legitimate criticisms that women have with video games.

Fighting-game-wise, the only person from Street Fighter she’ll likely focus on is Cammy. She could possibly focus on Sakura & Juri and arguably the Dolls, though not as “fuck toys” (maybe); maybe Elena too, but that’s really it, especially since SF3 has the most unisex female in fighting-game history (sans arguably KOF’s King) with Makoto. Ironically, the Dolls actually appear more than Rainbow Mika since they showed up in that recent movie or whatever and Juli & Juni show up in T. Hawk’s (depressing-ass) and Cammy’s endings respectively; meanwhile El Fuerte seems to be the only person who even remembers R. Mika exists and I think that was only in Udon, so… Street Fighter is pretty bad for her to try act victimized over despite its popularity since, for the most part, its women aren’t sexualized. (EDIT: I forgot about C. Viper given how deflated her breasts got. MvC3 didn’t, ahem, “expand” upon them out of nowhere.)
She’s obviously going to focus on Mai given she’s in the banner and Chun-li isn’t at all. Outside of Angel, though, KOF is much devoid of “offenders”. Hell, SNK as a whole is between KOF, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug and other things.
Hell, of the “big two” fighting game companies, the only other characters that come to mind are Morrigan/Lilith, who are fucking succubi and should thus be exempt, and maybe Felicia since she’s technically naked. Then again, Q-Bee is also technically naked and I highly doubt she’ll get talked about at all.
Other than that, I’m not really sure. Guilty Gear isn’t that well-known (to the masses), but there she could easily focus on I-no (though that’s missing the point), Dizzy, Bridget (heh) and maybe even Baiken. She’ll probably focus on Mortal Kombat and Dead or Alive though. Maybe Tekken as well.
Not-God help her if she actually includes Smash in this category, especially since the character with the most cheesecake factor in that series is actually Snake; seriously, he’s like vacuum-sealed into those pants given how much they hug his ass:

As long as teen-to-30-something year old men remain the predominant audience for video games, then video games will depict nubile, well-developed women in weirdly minimalist clothing for purposes of titillating the audience to which these games hope to cater.
If women want to see this change, the solution isn’t to try to shame men* or shame video game companies**. More women need to start playing games. Then games will be less expressly tailored to men.

It’s a question of intent and presentation. If something I liked got a bad reputation because it was part of a bad production, who should I be mad at, the person who pointed out the problem, or the person that created the problem? Hopefully people are afraid to do another game like Duke Nuke’em Forever, because a game like Duke Nuke’em Forever is terrible.

Eh even though i’m a guy and enjoy hot chicks and cheesecake as much as the next fan, in recent times its gotten out of hand. Its annoying and trite that 90% of female characters in games, comics, anime, etc, have to be scantily clad to a degree. Makes it tough to give a damn about them when part of the reason they’re around is to pander to the fan service in those certain segments. Throwing any creditability they had out the window in the process.
Then again media kinda reflects real life to a degree. Theres no shortage of women around in real life ready to show what they’ve got on a daily basis if they have it. Maybe i just live in a bad area lol, but on a daily basis its a common site to go to the local market and see a store full of chicks cavorting around in those skimpy short-shorts while they shop.
If the female masses expect to be taken seriously as more than just window dressing, then it couldn’t hurt for them to set a better example and dress more appropriately.
