Tropes vs. Women in Video Games

To be honest, I have to think she was kind of glad of it, until some jackass posted her phone numbers, then things got a lot more real. Before that it was both exposure and proving her point.

One of my friends on AIM (female) is kind of annoyed at her ‘deconstructing’ Hunger Games.

She’s baiting like none other, it would be brilliant if it wasn’t so damn EASY.

Still, (and I’ve been spending this whole time thinking of how to phrase it), what she’s talking about is definitely a real thing.

There are always some exceptions, its not 100%, but taken as a whole video game (let alone FG) portrayals of women are awful and exploitative. And hell, it works, I’m not gonna pretend I don’t enjoy the occasional candy (within reason), but **denying its an issue **is just not looking at reality.

Edit: Even if this lady comes off as a bit, well, shrill, all of a sudden her thing is making it real news. That’s probably a good thing.

Yes! Titties naturally occur in nature! Celebrate the titties, you daft motherfucker

Send this her way http://piranhamae.tumblr.com/post/22702400731/my-response-to-calling-skullgirls-sexist

Put down the controller and pick up the spatula.

Well that’s not quite it, is it :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s not about attractive women existing, it’s that in what’s probably a vast majority of cases, the womens primary characteristic (outside of wall-of-background text) is either ‘sexiness’ or ‘object to be protected’. When it’s something different (I note that somebody linked an image of Mitsuko above), the fans usually hate it and the character is removed or reworked.

I don’t expect the gaming industry to massively change, and I’m enough of a hypocrite to admit that I enjoy that crap too, but I’m gonna be honest and upfront about it, and I"m not gonna make excuses.

Wow. With a 150k budget these videos better make me a sandwich.

Sex sells.

Fictional women look sexy because all people are attracted to sexy characters. Yes, even women like ‘sexy’ female avatars. No girl who tries out Street Fighter would pick Chun Li if she looked like a gorgon, she would pick Ryu. Feminists are against sexy because sexy has an upkeep and they are lazy. Feminists are largely lazy and selfish.

Well that’s kind of bullcrap, and that lady has something to gain.

The only game that challenges Skullgirls in the objectification department is DOA. Freakin’ DOA. Ahad has to be so thrilled that he got his masturbation fantasies made into a game. Hell, the story is a copy/paste word swapfrom a specific anime porn series.

Again, lets not fool ourselves.

(Edit: It’s kind of stupid the crap I expose myself to doing research for these discussions, lol)

That’s…that’s not…I mean, the whole “fighting for wish-granting whatever” thing is a fairly common trope in anime, right? RIGHT?

You need to stop popping that Estradiol.

Let’s not be so narrow minded that sexist/sexism begins and ends with “does the character look good” shall we?

I don’t want to turn this into “she just mad those women have jobs and she has to use kickstarter to support herself”.

Pussy make the world go round.

#fuckinhaters:rofl:

Its not that at all, appearance if anything is a symptom. Of course they’re attractive, men are the same way (or are jokes, why oh why do the Japanese think the massively obese are so hilarious?). People like looking at things that are nice to look at.

Skullgirls is getting singled out because it’s not so much attractive, as it’s explicitly sexual, and in a particular way. Just like DOA. DOA wouldn’t be a posterboy for sexism if the directors didn’t like bragging about their advanced breast physics.

to put it again, everyone makes hot dudes and chicks, its the nature of the beast. There’s a difference between attractiveness and objectification.

Edit@Ben, wait until you see my forthcoming series about how hot, busty young girls have to fight for posession of the meat heart that will grant them their fondest wish. It’s SO HOT.

There is nothing wrong with being explicitly sexual or sexual objectification.

This whole topic will devolve into the male gaze argument anyway.

“LOOK AT HER! SHE IS MADE TO APPEAL TO MEN!”

“Women enjoy sexy females character. Besides, she was designed by a female.”

“SHE’S JUST TRYING TO APPEASE HER MALE OVERLORDS AND GAIN THEIR FAVOR!”

I mean, once you nuts get stuck there and don’t realize everybody enjoys attractive characters (male or female), there’s no point in the discussion.

She could be the female President of something, be aged and in a modest suit and feminist would still find something to bitch about.

I’m not saying it doesn’t exist or isn’t prominent but it’s like can there ever be made a female character that doesn’t offend them?

Not justifying it whatever but how are men characters not falling into typical tropes and gender roles and all that jazz as well?

Surprise! I’m actually Chris Hansen with Dateline NBC. Why don’t you have a seat over there?

At this point, I question if there’s any difference beyond the spelling in these types of topics.
