Been doing some traveling recently, and on a fluke, i finally stumbled upon (1) Slugslinger at a Walmart. To complete my TR Headmasters “seeker” trio. Then at another random walmart in the middle of nowhere, i ran into (1) Overlord (Yes!!!).
Luckily both were in near mint packaging and not beat-up or anything. And these were the only ones i ever saw and i grabbed them.
These guys must’ve had bad luck and were short-packed bigtime, near the end of the TR line up, before Power of the Primes.
And Sky Shadow was simply non-exisitant. Although Overlord is the one from that mold i really wanted.
As a big Rodimus Prime fan, this guy looks cool but…doesn’t seem quite like Rodimus. It looks like HotRod got his hands on the Mutagen in Ninja Turtles 2, and pulled a “Super Shredder”.
I still like it though and am impressed at the over-engineering. It has 4 modes! That try to represent both forms of each character. Despite the odd points, it’s has enough going for it to be worthwhile i think. I kinda want this guy more than Prime.
Probably because we just got a powermaster prime during the Titans Return line in the U.S, and then a better one in the japanese line (although the doofy feet on TR Ginrai always bothered me. I’m happier to have the U.S release).
And the more i see of Rodimus, the more i like it.
Took them long enough. All the past lines like the original classics, the alternators, etc. They were good but… didn’t go all the way for some reason. Like Hasbro/Takara were afraid to jump in. Maybe they thought it was too soon to go Full G1 style again?
Still hav’nt spotted the Pretenders yet. Individual Titan masters were neat but, hit & miss with me. However, i’m looking forward to getting ALL of the Pretenders.
On another note, more Power of the Primes Rodimus videos are popping up lately. The more i see of it, the more i like it. Not just as a Rodimus fan but, i’m impressed with it’s ambitious design with the 4 modes. Plus it seems like it’s attempting something new.
Orion Pax/Prime is objectively the BETTER figure but, aside from it’s neat rendition of Orion Pax, the vehicle mode suffers and while the combined mode looks pretty good, it seems like it’s trying to be a budget MP Prime wannabe. Which, if you already have MP-10, kinda seems needless. Sorta like the way Titans Return Soundwave looked great too but, if you already had MP-Soundwave, it didn’t make sense to get him also.
While we’ve never really gotten a proper be-all, end-all MP Rodimus. The first one was frustrating to transform with rampant quality control issues and something was just “off” about how it looked. And the MP-Hotrod was basically the same thing. A respectable figure and design but, had weird issues that threw things off.
I collect Prime, but I am skipping this Evolution figure. Like you said, it’s too close to MP-10. While it looks to be fun, there is way too much grey.
Rodimus is a figure that could have been great with a slightly higher parts count.
Regarding the MPs, I owned both at one time. I wish the ewer MP did the same hood trick as MP09. I am pretty confident that if Hot Rod was being developed today, he wouldn’t look the way he does now.
I wonder what other “leader class evolution” figures there could be. Perhaps a Megatron/Galvatron combination. Where Megs is the voyager figure and it combines into a Leader sized Galvatron.
Or do a Cerebros/Fort Max. Cerebros being the Voyager figure with large vehicle or Base. Then combined together to form Fortress Maximus.
Edit: Same goes for a Scorponok! Imagine a Voyager Zarak figure w/Large Scorpion vehicle form. Then they combine to make a Leader class sized G1 Scorpy!
