I’m wondering which system to buy this game for. And since I’m new to mk, wasn’t exactly sure which system will be the tourney standard?
PS3 without a doubt (although I don’t agree) will be the tournament standard. The PS pad seems to be more friendly towards fighting games and most majors seem to be agreeing on using PS3 as the standard (including EVO).
For SSF4, 360 seems to be the standard. MvC3 is kind of leaning towards that way too cause the online is so much better. I know for 3D (Soul calibur, tekken) it’s all PS3, but still not sure about MK9
PS3 often seems to be the gaming standard simply because of the ease of switching controllers in it. As someone who owns both systems (with NO fanboy bias either way) I prefer to play all fighting games, when not using a stick, on a PS3 pad. Its far superior.
Considering that PS3 will also have Kratos on it, it would feel a waste not to be able to use a character. I’m sure they’ll end up banning him or whatnot anyways because he’s console exclusive, but thats another discussion.
Hopefully Xbox 360 will be the norm. Evo and some other tournaments will continue to use PS3 of course. Kratos is going to be banned so I’m not sure why you’re even bringing that up.
Yeah. A man can dream. It just sucks to have a fully realized character that no one who plays competitively is going to be able to use.
Tekken 5 did the same thing, to an extent, by making Jinpachi a playable character but having him be completely broken. We could’ve had another ‘playable’ character, instead its just something to look at and never pick. Just like Kratos.

Question, why would you guys prefer the Xbox? Because more people own it?
Here in Columbus, it will be 360 (just like MvC3 & SSF4), but at Evo and Evo events its gonna be PS3.
I am willing to bet the 360 port will be the better tho.
I hope not, but that’s for selfish reasons.
will vary wildly tournament to tournament, so make sure you have access to controllers for both systems. Kratos is a nonissue either way unless there’s some super secret 360 character who’s a model swap for Kratos.
AFAIK it’s following industry standard for development procedures, so that’s likely, hopefully they’ll be close enough that I don’t need to resub to live tho.
The Xbox 360 is a nightmare for anybody who wants to run an event, because in order to support any downloadable content(which will show up at tourneys eventually), you need to be connected to the Xbox LIVE servers so big brother Microsoft can keep an eye on you. The tournament standard will be the PlayStation 3.
doesnt matter what you use online, even tho XBL is WAY better. But MK9 online means the same as it did for any other MK…
nothing.
I run tournaments on 360 and this couldn’t be further from the truth. Once you download the chars, they are on the harddrive, you do not need to be online. I’ve ran multiple 360 tournaments with downloaded content.
Either way, everybody has made good points. I have both systems, but for people bashing 360, unless you are a pad player, you should have no issue. The online is way better for fighting games. Good discussion either way
I’ve only played most fighters on the PlayStation 3, so I couldn’t tell you about the quality of the Xbox’s netcode versus the PlayStation 3’s. I think the last fighter I played on Xbox LIVE was BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, that should give you a decent idea of how long it’s been.
As far as I know the ps3 will always have the inherent input lag due to the video processor so I play on 360 whenever possible.
It really depends on whatever the tournament organizer runs it on. It’s pretty 50/50 from what I see.
From a player’s point of view the PS3 is idea. I own and play on both. For the most part, things feel the same. The one glaring factor is simple, sticks. Homemade or store bought most if not all sticks usb will run on a ps3. Xbox players have use xbox branded sticks or go the the difficult and expensive process of moding a stick to run on the system. Another thing to keep in mind. The platform that supports events should get HONOR of the played platform. Where is MS’s support of the fighting community> It is nowhere to be found.
which ever has the least amont of port problem but for now i favor 360 so we dont encounter the exclusive charcter problem, also the360 does seem favorible in lag input department. Player complaining about controllers simply aren’t serous about their gaming. I find it more effective to simple be versatile on this type of situation instead of debating standards.I’ll think that a dedicated player would do what ever it takes to keep what ever tool they want whether it be convenient or not.
I sport Snes controller and only that so I spend over $100 on multiple converters that will allow me to have access of my controller on majority given system. At first it can be seen as expensive, but to me it was worth it so i can stick with something I prefer.
.
I have one for the pc, wii, ps2,ps3, and xbox 360 for a long outdated controller so its not impossible to get around them. For those that sport dual shocks series will have little to no problem (which the majority favors) I recommend any player of any controller invest in to getting converters.
There probably won’t be a standard, it will be a PS3 at some tournaments and on a 360 at others. Just get a controller that you can use on a 360 and PS3. Such as an Arcade Stick, Madcatz SF Pad, PDP Marvel Controller, or a dual modded 360 controller. Or get an X-Converter for the 360 so you can use a PS2 controller on it.
This has been decided already?
