Tournament Readiness

When playing in person, I try to be courteous by sitting as faraway as possible from my opponent. Some things are just out of my control.

Also, since when is turning around and shaking my head in disgust not a viable tournament tactic? I thought that that was the true sign of a champion. I must have bought some low budget bootleg translation of Sun Tzu’s Art of War. There was a whole chapter on that technique.

The best way to get ready for tournaments is to start playing in them.
Get the experience, learn from it, get better for next time.

Also, get hype.

Yeah, also if you come out to TWars you can talk to Mark Santos/King/Whoever else rocks the Gief. Probably a lot you can get out of those guys.

Ya, I was actually there last night but Sampson + Chris’ Sagat is hard enough to beat.

Also not used to play with a stick in my lap, I think if Gameworks ever has a tournament, I’ll sign up for that. I would just be trash playing the way ya’ll do from your lap =D

Uhh…atleast in America there really aren’t many Arcade tourneys. (Are there any?) Every tournament NWM, NorCal Regionals, Evo, etc is played with consoles and done with a stick on your lap or on the floor or however you want to swing it. Some players bring like TV Trays with them so that they can set it up infront of them though.

I get you man I hate having that shit on my lap too, but you really gotta buckle down and do it eventually. I got a stick 3 weeks ago, and after like maybe an hour on it everday, I’d say Im almost about where i am on GW sticks. Also, although I havent seen it at TW, alot of top players play on the floor, might wanna try that.

Which is something this dude does not have. He plays Gief, of all characters, and complains about other characters being “Xbox live”? Hilarious. Dude wants to be ‘ready for tournaments’ but all he can do is make excuses? This is the same guy that always ragequits at gameworks huh? I’m not trying to e-thug but you need a reality check. You’re never gonna improve with that shitty attitude. There’s a counter to everything, including roundhouse.

I’ll play you in a $100 money match as long as you don’t throw. Throwing is cheap. Hella xbox live scrub status.

I’m in the opposite boat as you - I’m used to playing on my lap and I find the gameworks sticks to be awkward. So what? I play on them and use it as practice. Like someone said, tournaments are on console so I would find a TV tray that is the right height or start practicing on your lap.

I didn’t post this with the intent of having a shit-talking thread. Who are you again? My attitude used to be kinda poor, but you dont even know me. Your attitude seems to be pretty bad actually! I don’t complain about characters, I complainED (once) about xbox live shit. I guess you don’t understand it either Mechanica? Your post kinda pisses me off, because you’ve taken a constructive thread and turned it into a shit-talking stem.

What character do you play, and who do you have to borrow the $100 from? My mentality is perfectly fine: I want to win. I don’t complain about Sagat match ups, I just find them hard/impossible!

Mechanica, should I clarify what I meant by “Xbox Live shit”? Or do you think you could think about it and reply/edit your post so you dont look like nothing but a Guardian-Shit talker for that other guy?

You should probably clarify what you meant by “XBox Live Shit” for everyone, since that what this thread has become about.

That’s a question you should ask yourself.

We all know him.

Nobody knows you.

Getting the picture yet?

E-thug

This thread is productive.

Hey, everyone I know who posts regularly, stop please. None of this pride/ego posting is necessary nor even constructive in the least. Being condescending and adolescent is what I expect from kids and just straight douchebags… I don’t like thinking the people I play/hang with on a regular as kids or doucehbags, so just quit it.

Gieft, just relax on it all. I was actually kind of excited to hang out with you again when I heard you were going to be at Tournament Wars. I’m the Blanka player always wearing a green shirt and HELLA hyped at GameWorks a month or so back. We’ve chatted a few times there, and was glad you started posting, but don’t get trolled. It’s hard not to when people bust in with their two cents and all, but you just gotta let people run their mouth and just accept it.

Next time, hang out a little longer man, it’d have been fun to actually play you with my main (SE) rather than my alternate (BL).

Now back to the thread, there have been good points in here:

Playing in tournaments so you know how you fair in them - This is a must, even if you know how you fair against someone already, then merely try harder and see if you’re improving/stepping your game up enough to tilt the scales if even by a little bit.

Playing on an Arcade vs Lap - I can honestly say I can play comfortably in almost any position. I have played lying down looking side-wise at the screen, on the Arcade cabinets, on my lap, on the floor with the stick between my legs, criss-cross applesauce on my lap, criss-cross applesauce on the ground, and even with my knees/legs over the entirety of the stick next to my butt with my hands under my legs.

It just helps you break out of your comfort zone and increase the range of environments you can play well in by becoming comfortable/playing in those positions prior to.

I don’t mean to beef but I just wanted to make a post that would piss you off because yours pissed me off. Yes, please elaborate on how Bison is an xbox live bullshit character. Zangief isn’t exactly a fun character to play against. I’d rather not play street fighter than play against Zangief, personally.

Anyway, to be on topic, I agree in that the only way to prepare for tournaments is to play in more of them. For a lot of people you just have to cross this threshold of playing x number of tournaments before you really play your A-game in tournaments, and don’t get nervous or feel pressured.

Jared, you honestly think rage quitting a Gameworks match and saying the other player had to use “Xbox live” tactics to win and “I don’t need this shit” will fly in the SF4 community? Probably not. I’m not even mad at Gieft or anything I just thought it was hella funny that someone would get that mad over a video game. But I was merely relaying the info to Gieft that if he did that shit to a guy like jacob, Mickey, Mandel, Frank, or Josh they wouldn’t just brush the situation off.

I would actually like to see Gieft come out to a tournament to be honest, I love adding people to the SF4 scene. But it’s important that he knows that you can’t walk away from a match pissed saying shit like that because it’s so… X box live. :china:

Riki-oh, you seem to REALLY like to cling on to one night at Gameworks. You’re being a bitch.

As ESRB says from the get-go “Online experience may vary.”. Letting things bi-gons be bi-gons is probably the few respectable things we can do.

I’m glad we agree on the tournament experience being a big issue for a lot of people.

Then ask yourself, could you have used a more tactful approach when elaborating your point? Honestly, comparing yourself to people such as you listed isn’t something I would use as an excuse to promote this kind of behavior man. Every one of those guys has had beef with someone at one point or another, but for the most part, are friendly with everyone and get over it.

I’ve rage quit before, I’ve gotten completely frustrated to the point I didn’t even want to play the game anymore because of how bad I’d get beat, or how bad my execution was, or this or that. I’m still around because I can own up to my problems and bounce back in a positive fashion and just be happy hanging with my friends. Being double-edged and saying your last statement isn’t going to have any constructive feedback, as shown in response by Gieft.

Cool our jets, play hard, go pro. Naw mean?

Edit: Let me add to this, there have been days where I’ve not just been off, but gotten mad for losing and saying: “I just don’t expect you to play like I’m playing someone on Xbox Live.” I remember this from the time you would just play Balrog and headbutt ANYTHING I’d do as Seth, because you know if you got lucky and hit (Frustration obvious, got lucky a lot) it would be great and if not no big deal as I couldn’t deal damage.

Does that mean we should hold that memory forever? I do just to keep myself in check as my etiquette around my peers. How well do you know Gieft? Is he really a bad guy? He’s been nothing but positive around me and when we would play, we had a blast goofing off and playing hard.

Moral of the story is: Everyone has their off/bad days, we gotta relate.

So, I know I’m not a good player, but Jacob once told me “You don’t do anything more than 3 times in a row.” And then he went on to say something along the lines of “keep doing it if it works.” Since sweeping is such an “xboxLive / PSN” thing to do, I’ll sweep all day IRL if it throws people off.

No but for real it’s such a stupid habit of mine :frowning: I needa get my backup medium kick on all day.

Yikes, this thread is pretty silly. Never seen this guy at Gameworks before, at the same time I can’t say much as I don’t hit up GW barely at all anyways…However with all the nonsense that I’ve seen this guy post, I just wanted to chip in some “constructive criticism.”

Gieft…your mentality needs to change…your sounding a whole lot like an unnamed “Northener” player with your attitude of “I’m super competitive and determined to win no matter what it takes…BELIEVE IT!!” You already have some clear mental blocks that you’ve posted in this thread being that: 1, that you’ll “never” take first…2, that you clown on “xbox live shit” and feel justified when you lose to such crap…and 3, that you have an attitude that no one would WANT to help you with…Let me ask you this, you started this thread to become “tournament ready” right? Then think like a fucking champion, not some self righteous jerk who can’t take a loss.

Lastly:

Learn where you are…this is a place far away from 6th and Pike called “the internet.” You don’t know anyone here, and YOU are the new comer. When asking for “help” like “constructive criticism” don’t come in here with guns blazing…drop your ego dude, why don’t you come out and just say that your calling SRK out already?

To reiterate, YOU are the one looking like the E’thug…and to educate you on basic street fighter ettiquete, there is no such thing as a "friendly money match"…coming from the guy who says that “all I want to do is win!”…get the fuck outta here with that circle jerk bull shit. Your looking hella weak kid, and you came to the wrong place to be saying stupid stuff like this.

EDIT: You’re right Riki, if anyone DID do that to me in a public arcade situation, I wouldn’t brush it off. Kids need to learn their place in the scene. It’s damn right ridiculous that you have players here that say they want to get better, when all they really mean is that they want instant success. If this guy did that to me in the arcade, please believe I would drop $100 instantly to take him out again to take more than his pride away from him.

^As weird as it sounds I’m gonna say straight up that’s the truth…in a mm you want to take the other persons money not be their friend. Also yeah…if you think you have what it takes prove it by placing at some tourneys not by saying you wanna be prepared but know you aren’t gonna win…that’s dumb…as you can see this is a your mentality vs everyone with a hint of jalapNo mediation/consoling talk…This has been the most amusing thread in a little while though…Eman on a terror heads up.
