SBO 3s team tourney >>>>>>>>>> Evo chun vs chun vs chun
That is easy to say considering that there is no real money involved at Tougeki. People play to show off their skills and strive for the best. It gives more incentive to use lower tier characters. If money was involved, then you would see many more higher tier characters being used. If money was not involved at Evolution, there would not be as much of an incentive to go, especially for international players. But since money is involved at Evolution, it gives more incentive to use higher tier characters. The only way to get rid of Chuns and Yuns from the top 8 at Evolution is to outright ban Chun’s SA2 and Yun’s SA3, but why would the staff ever that?
how come nobody bothered to update day 3?
I don’t think money has anything to do with it.
In 2004 Sugiyama came to Evo and still used Necro. Kokujin still used Dudley.
There is simply more players in Japan and by extension of that you will see more characters get used. However it should be noted this is the first SBO where a team that didn’t consist of a combination Chun/Yun/Ken/Makoto has won, thus showing that even when money isn’t involved we still see high tier abuse.
There will still tons of teams with Chun on them at SBO. In fact I think more teams had Chun on them than teams that didn’t. Money is irrelevant. Once you get below Yun and Chun, the differences between the strength of different characters becomes a lot less noticeable. Ken and Makoto don’t dominate nearly as bad as Yun and Chun do.
I think money is what drives the tournaments in the United States. If a tournament does not involve with money, chances are, it would not have great turnouts. I also think people like to win and would use everything in the book to get the prize; and there is nothing wrong with that.
To be fair, a lot of people do use characters other than Makoto, Chun, Yun, and Ken. Look at JR, he got top eight with his Gouki at Evolution this year. However, most people simply do not have the privilege of having competition, like myself, to know how to properly break down a great Chun or Yun. This is an important reason why there are so many Chuns at the Evolution finals.
To sum is up, I do think money has an influence to the results but the community that you live in has an impact as well.
Sugiyama and Kokujin are Japanese players that were competing an American tournament whom they had been using their staple characters for a long time. The last time Kokujin came to Evolution was 2005. The only player, correctly me if I am wrong, that did not used Makoto, Chun-Li, or Yun for the past three Evolutions is KSK, whom uses Alex. The last Ken from Japan that went to Evolution was Daigo back in 2006.
There had always been higher tier abuse at all games. If there was not, then they would not be top tier characters. Even at this year’s Tougeki. The runner-up used Yun, Chun, and Ken. I just find the Tougeki having more variety of great low-tier play. I guess that should be expected considering that you get to watch the whole tournament.
If you really want to make a comparison, here are some stats.
SBO6: 96 [3-on-3]
21 Chun-Li
17 Yun
09 Ken
09 Dudley
08 Yang
07 Makoto
06 Urien
05 Gouki
03 Elena
02 Remy
02 Oro
02 Necro
02 Ibuki
02 Twelve
01 Q
00 Sean
00 Ryu
00 Hugo
00 Alex
SBO2: 96 [3-on-3]
12 Yun
11 Ken
10 Urien
10 Dudley
09 Chun-Li
07 Makoto
06 Ryu
06 Gouki
04 Yang
04 Ibuki
03 Remy
03 Q
03 Oro
03 Necro
02 Alex
01 Twelve
01 Hugo
01 Elena
00 Sean
The amount of Yuns and Chuns had doubled since SBO2. In fact, over half the teams have Chuns this year. However, if you neglect the Yuns and Chuns, there are still a great amount of variety.
Also, I could do this over the PM. I do not want to spam a topic. Thanks.
Most of the stuff you’re saying I agree with. It’s true that money matters more to American players than Japanese, but you implied that the lack of a big money prize at SBO affects the character selection, and it doesn’t. A team format at Evo would increase character variety though.
If money was involved at Tougeki, this is the type of turnout I would expect.
30 Chun-Li
24 Yun
08 Ken
07 Gouki
06 Yang
06 Urien
06 Makoto
05 Dudley
01 Oro
01 Necro
01 Ibuki
01 Pink Sean
This type of turnout would probably happen in the next three years anyways but that is off topic.
I do agree that a team format at Evolution would increase variety though.
Does anyone know what characters LCQTeam used in GGAC?
Only 1 Pink Sean?
IIRC prize money **is **awarded at SBO …
Sorry JSP, I’d help you if I understood Japanese.
These are the prizes for the Tekken winners last year.
Winner: 1000 yen, Special Tougeki (insert game) Card, Award Certificate
Runner-Up: Special Tougeki (insert game) Card, Award Certificate
Only the winner gets the money. It is roughly $9.20.
Keep in mind that 1000 yen is roughly $10.
lol. 10 dollars for winning the biggest fighting game tournament in the world? I guess pride and reputation is a pretty big thing over there.
imagine if evo prize was 10$?
Dude, winning SBO makes you an instant Gaming Celebrity. Keep in mind their competitive fighting game community is bigger there than it is here, and at whatever local arcade you’re at, they’re gonna have your pic on the wall all big and like “SBO CHAMPTION” written next to it and stuff. Even if you lose every game you ever play afterwards, it doesn’t matter, you’re the champion.
Cause only geeky anime nerds like those games.
I remember watching the prize ceremony when Nuki and Daigo won 3S. They got PS2s and copies of 3S. So maybe the prizes listed are just the one’s Tougeki themselves provide. Everything else is provided by sponsors.
So much truth behind that.
