Tougeki Lineup 2010

if 99% of them would agree then why don’t they switch to double elim?

diago =/= japan

Winning a match against a particular opponent in a tournament that is single elimination doesn’t say much, but the winner of the tournament as a whole is the player that displays the best consistency, without being given second chances.

At the same time though, the fact that many games are team games, pretty much eliminates this so called randomness that you are talking about.

The rest of what you said about SBO is nonsense…

And btw, you don’t actually have to go to SBO(like some people that went there and think they are more important now) in order to understand why the format isn’t necessarily a bad thing, that they have the best players in the world and some of the best matches you’ll ever see.

I had heard that Arcadia magazine (and the arcade scene as a whole in Japan) had not been doing well, and that the magazine would most likely cease this year or next. Is there any truth to this? This came from somebody writing part time for them.

If so, what will happen with SBO if that’s the case?

And then…

Talk about nut riding.

Beat me to it.

so i can’t quote daigo now without riding his nuts?
if players directly involved in SBO are disatisfied with the format what the fuck does that mean?

i remember even known american players lashing out at SBO last year and being salty about the format

Aquashark, I recommend that you stop now while you can. No need to continue to ridicule yourself.

Is the prize money more important than the acknowledgment and prestige? Last time I checked, arcades weren’t dead in Japan. You obviously have a problem with the japanese. Get over it.

Single elimination is the format to use because to be able to go to SBO, you have to actually qualify in your region, where you’re given more than a shot. SBO is just the finals, so it only makes sense to do single elimination.

Both SBO and EVO are two great tournaments with formats that fit perfectly into each region’s idiosyncrasy and distinctiveness. I don’t hate on either one unlike others here. I consistently prefer SBO’s lineup and that’s about it.

If single elimination was a great idea, Evo would have it. But no, people with brain made of half a bowl of cowshit understand that single elimination tournaments are just for the hottest gimmick to win. Team tournaments are less random because you have your teammates helping out. But really, you have to be some kind of anime raped twelve year old to believe that a single elimination is a better option for tournaments than 2/3 matches.

single elim tournies are fun, they are just a different kind of skillset. of course, you wouldnt know that being a 12 year old child.

What skillset would that be exactly? The “don’t get randomed out” skillset? Enlightenment as to what logical arguement you could have for having single elimination tournaments. You know, unless you were running tournaments with thousands of players like Japan used to have to where they had to have single elimination for the sake of time.

SBO/Arcadia are definitely dying (whereas since Evo made the move to console, it’s definitely thriving.) I don’t know what’s gonna happen to Arcadia/SBO but I think it’s the beginning of the end.

newsflash: people bitch and whine about evo format too. So, does that mean Evo is shit?
EVO is a open tournament, SBO is a closed tournament meant to put on a show more than anything. Obviously they are going for two different things.

fyi, if japan tournaments were double elim EVER…they would take all fucking day (longer than american tournaments.) I prefer double elim too but you really have no idea what youre talking about.

besides, I doubt youve been to either tournament to begin with so you should really stop.

damn why do people try to act like a know it all?
single elim = char lock
which means you have to know your matchups

Sorry, you are correct. 98 wasn’t NOT in SBO last year because of some China > Japan thing. It more had to do with Capcom’s monopoly on the 2nd day games. So yeah, you are correct, thanks for fixing my error. I guess I confused 2008 SBO with 2009, haha.

Aquashark - That’s because he’s a very high level player who uses a very good character. In American formats, the best players have a lesser chance of being randomed out. Has Daigo been “randomed” out at SFIV? No, he’s won all the tourneys. He also got a shit ton of money for winning. Of course he’s gonna support that format. Some other JP players may like it too, and some may like single elim. I personally kind of prefer something in between. Both have their advantages.

Yes, brilliant reasoning

A DOES X

B DOES Y

IF Y WAS SUCH A GOOD THING, A WOULD DO IT TOO

Fuck off, your kind is even worse than japan nutriders

It sucks to fly all the way to japan for a single elimination tournament.
But it’s not that bad if you happen to live there and go to tournaments every week.

But overall I’m a fan of playing as much as you can within the time limit.

What kind of statement is that? Does Evo have a monopoly on good ideas?

And “getting random’d out” is just a fucking excuse at the level they play at.

Not really if you actually get invited to Japan with paid expenses.

even more so, SBO is a closed tournament that can afford to be double elim… but it isn’t! and it’s only once a year…

come on now… what’s the point of this really? people talk about sports, etc. all the time… do i have to be physically involved to have an opinion on a tournament format?

It’s kinda funny we have this debate on the eve of the Superbowl, arguably the biggest sporting event in America…which also just happens to be one game.

But I’m sure the best team throughout the regular season always wins that one. Just ask the 08 Patriots.

Not to have an opinion, but it certainly has little backing it up. Having been to SBO personally, and played the players who compete in it, I like single game, single elimination format. Maybe its hard to appreciate if you’ve never experienced it, so I’ll give you that, but at least recognize that its a difference in philosophy, and not some objective fact that double elimination is better, and SBO is a “game show” more than a tournament for running it that way. That just makes you sound stupid.

The patriots were cocky assholes, the better team won that day

Glad to see 3s, ST and GG all in the line-up.

Really pumped about 3s in particular. All the stuff The Shend has been posting on his channel recently has been great. I’ve been playing/watching the game for a long time, and I’m seeing stuff I’ve never seen before. New styles, new players, and even mainstays really stepping up. RX is scarier than ever. His play in the most recent tournament was nuts. Pino was killing it as well. Just the tip of the iceberg. Should be an excellent tourney.
