Toronto blank box on sale

I am getting PMs about parts included and installed… these are blank boxes… no joystick, buttons or pcb will be included… you have to source those yourself. Main reason is I don’t want to deal with the hassles of customizing each stick

I am contracting a local woodworking company to mass produce joystick boxes bases on the slagcoin design since all the other guys are busy:

final design is posted and the price is set at $80 CAD plus shipping if you need it, local pickup will be available once they are delivered to me

  1. the top is CNC for a JLF / LS32 flat mounting plate, other plates will fit only if you do some minor enlarging of the square hole…

  2. I mention no joystick and no buttons… that means NO PCB INCLUDED!!!

  3. there is no hole for the cable pre-drilled because some people use wireless, some people use RJ45, etc… so I can’t make universal hole… you can drill / dremel your own hole in the box

  4. yes, the button nuts how the plexi down

  5. the layout is here http://www.slagcoin.com/joystick/layout/shift36_l.png

  6. it’s first come first serve… i will work down the list and the last post will always contain the most updated sheet

  7. the back buttons have been switched from 30mm to 24mm buttons (production issue, the 30mm won’t fit without making the box “thicker”)

  8. there is visible nails or screws…

  9. the box is currently primered and unpainted

  10. they will not work with Happ parts… happ box coming soon

Comments:

changes:
1,2,4,5 Nice
3. plexi screws: Is it possible to use the screw buttons to hold down the plexi to the mdf
6b) will there be an option for primer painting of the hardwood too?

opinions:

  1. If you cannot make it universal: Sanwa mount
  2. Screw buttons: see comment #3 in “changes” section above
  3. Not a big deal. Great idea to keep it simple in the first run.
  4. Not a problem

Notes:
Will PM you

so are u really located in Toronto cuz ill buy some off you when u get them up and running

I am in North Markham (highway 7 and woodbine area)

gns: i wanted to try that with my screw buttons, if it works then it will be much cleaner look

dice01: once i get a prototype running and work out the bugs i will put up a list for pre-order… it’s only a limited run for toronto guys until the other custom guys can catch up…

I would be interested but I don’t like having 8 buttons on the top panel. I’m sort of a purest.

I’d rather have just the Joystick, and the 6 buttons on the top panel, and the start, home and select buttons on the sides.

I don’t suppose you can just make a simple one with just 6buttons ontop?

Depending on the price, I might be interested. Particularly if all the parts are included and installed.

I would really be interested in a blank case depending on the price

I can make a few with 6 holes, no issue

I mentioned above these are blank boxes, no parts will be included nor installed… there is less headaches this way

I am aiming for $60-$80 range … remember this is CAD… not USD…

-joe

Mark me down as interested.
Any Approximation of time frame?

I just wanted to pop in a say I think it’s cool you’re putting this together.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to do this, but I’ll be watching this thread closely. I have an order in for a TE, so if that works out that might be about all the money I can muster. While I’d kind of prefer a more unique looking stick, I also haven’t modded or built a stick before and just knowing a TE will be all ready to go is appealing.

However, if these really run $60-80 that isn’t bad at all and I might pick one up for the hell of it to play around with.

If I did, I’d be planning to put in a Cthulhu but I don’t know how you mount the chip inside. Would there be a place built for this in the stick, or do you just secure it with mounting screws of some kind and set the inside up however you like?

  1. 45 degree cut for corners is fantastic
  2. universal mounting for Seimitsu and Sanwa would be great, but I can see why it might be tricky. preference to Sanwa if it must be one.
  3. 8 buttons on top doesn’t bother me
  4. What is MDF? How do the materials differ as far as feel or working with them?
  5. Button layout will be same as TE?
  6. Screw in buttons are fine as far as I know. They’re the same just different mounting right?

the buttons are the same screw in or snap in

the button layout is TBD… most likely same as TE…

seems people prefer sanwa… I personally bought Seimitsu so at least a few will use that mount…

-joe

Sounds really good. I may be interested in buying one of the cases. The only question I have is about the button layout. Is it going be the curved layout with the 8 buttons?

Edit: Nevermind I saw you just posted something about it.

So, like… can I get dibs on one of these?

if you guys have some idea on the “ideal” layout for the 8 buttons (and 6 buttons for the purist) then post it up and i will take it into consideration

-joe

+1 for Fightstick TE layout. Works great!

I’d say the ideal layout would be:

Purists:

Back panel with 3 button holes for home/guide, select, start to the left. 2 button holes for L2/R2 to the right.
Top panel with 6 button holes

8 buttons:

Back panel with 3 button holes for home/guide, select, start centered.
8 buttons on the top panel similar to the MadCatz TE layout.

I’m definitely interested in this specially if it’s around $60CAD, although I do prefer snap-in buttons. My only issue would be I’ll be doing this for the 360, so the padhacking can be tough, and the needed things may be hard to find in Canada. But that’s not your problem.

My fav button layout (8): http://www.horistore.com/images/items/detail/HP2-259.jpg

Will the box be painted/finished?

Subscribed. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

-If the design will be CNC’ed, you should try less box-y designs, since the hard part of making sticks with curves will be done already by machine. I understand that it would be almost impossible to do with MDF, but for hardwoods you should really look into it. Getting a hardware case box is the worst of both worlds; boring design and spendy wood. Having a cheap MDF box available and a top tier sexy hardwood case would cover a lot of demographic.
-Look into carriage bolts instead of screws if you can. That should only be a last resort though; if you can get the top screw in buttons holding the plexi down, it’d be much better.

For a joystick mount: I dug through the awesome measurements of the plates on Akihabarashop. From what I can tell, it looks like the best way would be to have three holes one the top and three on the bottom.
Center holes: 82.5mm apart, vertically in line with center of stick.
Corner hole: 84mm apart from the other side, 20mm to the side of the vertical line through the center of the stick
Check over the mounting plate measurements on Akihabara shop and you should see what I mean.
Sorry if that’s confusing.

  1. Plexi should at least be an option.
  • another:rock:

the top panel is CNC machined, so I can come up with two designs… in terms of making the box less boxy… I have to see what I can do in that dept. since MDF is not very “curvable”

tentatively the top is 8 x 12 plexi + the box surround… the corners are mitred 45 degree cuts and the edges are routered round…

there is a minimum run of 30 boxes… I am working on the first prototype tonight and I am still waiting for the various pcb / joysticks / buttons to get here for test fitment…
