Tom Brady going deep on MK9 on Alphaism Radio [PODCAST]

If sfiv online quality is supposed to be the standard, it is a sad world we live in, because that is horrible, horrible netcode

Any netcode that adds input delay is horrible, end of story

Excellent podcast, didn’t mind the violence talk but wished they talked even more about the game mechanics and specific character stuff. Still, I learned a lot.

Thanks for everyone involved in the Podcast.

The only issue about the violence talk I had was that it became very repetitive after 15 minutes. Didn’t really agree with the “they focused so hard on the violence and not the fighting game engine” argument. You could say the same thing about SF4 which have 2 animated ultras for each character. Only difference is that MK used blood and limb decapitation and SF didn’t. It probably didn’t take too long to come up with the fatalities “how about Stryker shoots a guy in the head and Kung Lao runs their body through his hat like a skill saw blade”.

Games have ratings for a reason. If parents don’t want their kids playing these games they can limit them somewhat by not letting them own the game and checking up on what they are playing. Sure they won’t be able to stop them from going to their friends and playing it, but you do what you can do.

Taking the violence out of MK would be like taking bananas out of Donkey Kong or the Master Sword out of Zelda.

Really? So Bill was behind the design of MK9 and did the programming too?

Eli Manning > Tom Brady

He tested the game before release, and most of the fixes are based on his(?) findings. So yeah?

Much as how people on this forums is moer focused on gameplay, the more casual MK fanbase is around violence and stuff. So topics about moral debate and about Fatalities will have to come up in a radio interview. I mean come on, the casual non-hardcore non-fighting gamer fans will care more about seeinf Fatalities then mix-ups/cross-up/set-ups/combos/etc. It’s just how it is.

Expect Tom Brady to show up in EVO and win MK9 tourney. Come on, he have to live up to his name of being one of the few MK pro gamer. (Even if, he exploits the broken glitch combos and god tier chars in previous MKs.)

Some of the comments in this podcast really grated with me, the comments about morality surrounding the gore were ridiculous. The idea that gore and good gameplay are mutually exclusive is absurd.

Gameplay is first and foremost for me, but that’s not to say I don’t appreciate the gore and the violence. Without it, it’s NOT Mortal Kombat, it’s just yet another fighting game. Not to mention the fact that it brings in the casuals and builds a bigger fanbase who are the future tournament players.

I don’t think anyone has the right to say, if you enjoy MK for whatever reason you are not a true fan.

The problem with gore is that it just looks stupid. It’s ok in certain games, like GoW, but here it’s clearly allabout the shock value. I much preferred the mroe absurd fatalities because they wer emore creative and entertaining, rather than ‘look at me rip this guy’s head off’. It’s a shame they chose to go for the blood. The only people they hurt are themselves because they curtail their own audience. I’m not suprirsed Aus banned the game, but i doubt the Aus economy gives a shit, whereas NRS have lost potential customers. Pretty stupid.

No, Australia is what’s pretty stupid. Don’t make excuses to legitimize their entirely backwards standards and practices which even their own politicians are recognizing are the laughing stock of the western world.

And as others have said, Mortal Kombat is gritty and bloody. That’s what it is. Point of fact, the gore in MK9 is nowhere near as cartoonish as in any previous game. I don’t see how you can say it’s just shock value then say God of War is “okay”, when God of War is the poster child for “shocking amounts of gratuitous violence”, just to show how hateful and cruel Kratos is.

The fact that MK is back and big is going to be an interesting experience to observe.

It’s going to highlight who are actually adults, who are the manchildren that are worried about what people think of their entertainment - children worry about looking grown up. Actual grown ups proceed with confidence and don’t justify their legitimacy to the crowd.

It’s already kind of funny to hear people already griping about the fact that fatalities performed at tournaments are “wrong” yet hear the crowd cheering and getting a huge laugh out of the fatalities - so far, evidence suggests that most people think it’s entertaining and don’t have problem with it. Generally speaking, Mortal Kombat does a good job of taking the piss out of fighting games (and out of people who take their fighting games too seriously).

It is just even better now that a Mortal Kombat game has good play and keeps up the tradition.

I’m not making excuses for anyone. NRS knew the law in Aus doesn’t allow for these kinds of game. Their choice, their consequence.

I know. Doesn’t mean I can’t bitch!

Lol I just thought it was funny. It was understandable because the game hadn’t been out for too long so not knowing it wasn’t a counter (if you don’t play him too often) isn’t anything crazy. Just got a good kick out of it.

Wait and punish is your friend.

And in GoW it’s for… mythological accuracy?

I don’t particularly care either way in terms of Fatalities, but if you had half a brain you would realize that the American movie market is huge on slasher/torture-porn/gore-hound/grindhouse movies. So it would be pretty stupid if they turned away that audience, just for some Austrailians who probably wouldn’t care less about Mortal Kombat.

Oh grow up.

This is where you’re wrong. The banning of MK9 in AUS is important. The push towards generating an 18+ rating is getting stronger with every game that is banned there. In fact, after MK9 was banned, one of the AUS officials said that AUS law was archaic, as they are one of the only developed countries without an 18+ rating.

It’s really not.

And if you think a deliberately and explicitly visceral hyper violent video game is going to do the cause any good you’re the one that’s wrong.

How can gore not be okay in a series that pretty much started and sold gaming gore to the public while it is okay elsewhere? Wut?

Also, I doubt Australia is a major point of NRS’ strategy. They can’t be bothered with who gets to play their game. They were out to make a game they felt was true to the franchise. Part of that is a bloody presentation.

I didn’t say the gore wasn’t ok.

I said that using MK to champion the breakdown of restrictive censorship laws is a bad idea.
