I actually got to test the set up on 3s (game I use as a benchmark lol) and I really like it, had to adjust a little but I liked the end result.
The JLF parts will fit the JLW? What about the ball top? Just any 35mm balltop? That harness will allow me to use my JLW?
What do you mean no shaft cover version?
I didn’t realize you said DOES accept the JLF dust washer. I thought you meant does NOT.
I am out
Did I do something to offend you?
A lot of stick parts are interchangeable. Stuff like ball tops, dust washers, (some) shaft covers, wiring harnesses, and so on. If you see JLF wiring harness then it will work on a JLW and any other stick that has .187 quick disconnects.
Cherry switches will not work in a JLW unless you find levered ones, and good luck with that.
Why are you so hell bent on changing switches, may I ask? Can you detail what it is you want to change in the feel of a stick? Spring mods will go A LOT farther than switch mods for changing the feel of the stick.
Did you read the whole thread? I’m not hellbent on changing switches. I was just told that was something I should do.
Thanks for the advice
I did read the thread. I still don’t see anywhere you mentioning why you want Cherry switches other than someone mentioning them. Have you thought about what changes they’ll make? Have you thought about them being over 2x less tense than the original switches? Switch modding isn’t exactly necessary when it comes to sticks. Most of the other aspects will change the feel a larger degree.
For example, getting less tense switches means you need higher tension springs. If you think the tension is low on stock then putting in low tension switches but higher tension springs defeats the purpose since in the end, it will feel close to stock again.
Do you want less sound? If you don’t care about sound, then stick to stock switches. They neutral a lot faster than low tension quieter switches.
This is why I asked, why do you want to change your switches, other than someone told me to.
Thanks a ton for the insight! Really appreciate it. I may buy them anyway just in case I want to fiddle with them, but I’ll hold off on putting them on. I’ll try the springs / actuators first.
Do you have any thoughts on Gamerfinger buttons? Any idea what size the TE / TE-S buttons are? 24mm?
Will http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/paradise-arcade-custom-parts/111-sanwa-jlf-cd-shaft-cover-kit.html and http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/sanwa-35mm-balltops/187-sanwa-lb-35-solid-black-ball-top.html both work for the JLW? I don’t need any kind of mounting plate right? Just http://www.focusattack.com/187-to-5-pin-conversion-harness/ and the JLW in order to use it - correct?
Standard button sizes are 30mm for Japanese buttons, 1.125" for US, and 28mm for Korean. 24mm buttons are commonly used for start, select, home, etc.
Is there any reason to get the Kowal actuators http://www.focusattack.com/kowal-1mm-oversize-actuator-for-sanwa-jlf-series-joystick/ over these http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/pas-custom-annodized-parts/762-20mm-oversized-jlf-actuator.html?
Also, there are reasons other than sound to do the Cherry switch mod. Actual actuation point is different, and the 40 million more presses MTBF is no small thing, though truthfully, in the case of home use, you’ll probably never see the end of life for the Omrons. Was just making my recommendations with what I usually do.
Dude, just try some of this stuff out. People are going to tell you what they like best, which by definition is subjective.
EDIT: That’s my plan! I’m going to try it all out. I’m just trying to figure out which brands and such are most reliable so I don’t buy crappy things. Like those oversized actuators. Do I go with the metal ones or the ones that look like their either plastic or rubber *(http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/paradise-arcade-exclusive-products/979-05mm-oversized-jlf-delrin-actuator-lt.html)
I’m also super interested in trying a Korean stick. Can anyone tell me what I need to buy in order to do that too?
EDIT: I found this here: http://www.focusattack.com/crown-303-fk-korean-joystick-clear-black/. That + the conversion harness + a JLF conversion shaft (to allow me to use ball tops) is the best way to go for trying a korean stick, right?
The differences between Cherry engage and Omron are not significant. I’ve played on both. Omron basic snap action switches will also do the same amount of presses. You’re thinking of the SW-68’s that only have a million or so, and those are a totally different type of switch.
I’d pass on the Korean stick. Get acquainted with Japanese sticks first. Korean sticks are completely different, and at least in the case of Crown sticks, more difficult to hit diagonals on.
The Kowal actuator is completely different from the Paradise Arcade ones. The PAS ones are made to function like stock actuators at larger sizes. The Kowal is meant to change other aspects of it. IMO if you are using a JLF then you want to use the PAS ones. Kowal actuator would be good in the event there were levered switches on the stick, but there aren’t, so, it’s best to maintain the original design purpose of a JLF for a number of reasons.
Metal vs plastic isn’t such a big deal. Metal ones work fine, plastic ones work fine. Plastic ones won’t need a lubed shaft. Metal will.
As for brands, it doesn’t matter which you get as long as it has a good reputation. Seimitsu sticks are also good. Brand loyalty usually leads to missing out on some good stuff in most cases.
You mentioned that I’ll need a lubed staff. What kind of lube do I get? The plastic ones on PA are out of stock so I need to get the metal ones.
Well I just ordered a ton of stuff! I’m super excited about trying everything out. I just wish I had one of those Razer sticks because it would be super easy to mod so I can figure out which I like. I’ve got a TE and the TE-S and I’ll try different things in each of them side by side so I can determine which I like best.
The one thing I forgot to order is the lube for the actuators. Is there something I can just get on amazing? I have some Krytox for mechanical keyboard switches / stabilizers. Would that work along the shaft? Where do I put it exactly?
I have http://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=756
Should I order the other stuff instead? I just placed my order with them like an idiot.
No.
I will say that it’s kind of funny: you’re saying that you want to get (more or less) one of everything so that you can make your own choices on what to keep going on forward, yet you’re basically asking everyone to tell you what you should be buying; and not only in the general sense, but down the detail of “Actuator A vs Actuator B”. Seems to contradict itself…
