Can you bring it here? =) I know it’s out I just can’t get retail until this Friday
@Squabbler: I’m already playing half the cast as it is. Not well, but I am.
@Arson: Yeah, Juri is retarded. I actually started playing Honda as a joke but I do “Okay” with him.
@W00t: Bison is like my uh… 5th character or something. Also, I do “Okay” with him.
Overall thoughts, I’ve been telling myself that I need to drop Juri for a while now. Basically she’s a gimmicky character with, mediocre frame traps, and everything that she’s good at somebody else does it better.
Who/what was this directed at?
Think it’s just a general statement about IT and how SRK deals with threads / database structuring… But his last paragraph does have a lot of truth to it… Being in the web / graphic design world, it pretty much holds the same weight…
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a company go to someone else for work because that person will “do it cheaper”, only to come back 4 months later for me to fix what that person broke or start from scratch… It’s like clockwork in this industry… There are SOME clients that have some general idea of what is going on, but for the most part you have to educate them a little…
I’ve wanted to drop Juri for a while but after playing AE I actually want to stick with her, she got buffed just enough to make her fun again. On a competitive level, she’s not that viable IMO because her game hinges on your opponent giving you openings. That isn’t to suggest that you can’t create your own but you have to know an immense amount about matchups and what to expect from individual characters. (Who to store HK fireballs on, who to store LK fireballs on, who to NEVER store ANY fireballs on, etc.) It’s not that she’s necessarily bad but you have to work very hard for wins. IMO Juri’s punishing options are way too weak to be considered truly dangerous, and she needs to punish often.
I mained Cammy in vanilla and still use her, but Juri is fun when she works. Sadly, at high-level play people train specifically against allowing her gimmicks to work. Dive kick me once, shame on you, dive kick me twice, dive kick me three times…
We need to get those Juri mirrors in, maybe over Live? My schedule is lightening up later this week but I’m swamped. Gonna be at GG for sure this Saturday.
Yeah, I’ll be up there this weekend. Gotta get my wife’s stick dual modded.
I’ll teach you Makoto.
iQuick: As someone who according to the Memphis crew has improved my game, I would humbly suggest Balrog.
He has basic/easy high stun combos and outside of Chun-li has the best normals in the game. You will literally beat fools with only normals. He also makes you more aware of spacing and is a good character to learn footsies with. He forces you to develop a defense too because against certain characters (Ken, Akuma, etc) you really want to avoid being knocked down as the fun really begins for your opponent once he’s down as Rog’s options are limited on wake-up. So try him out you may like him. And the characters Squab recommended are solid choices too.
And I see things are about to get real…
I can use Juri too, but I don’t like storing fireballs =P
iQuick, with your play style (and the fact you are looking for a female character) I would say use Chun-Li since she is solid in every aspect and can played multiple ways.
Also, Balrog’s options are limited on wake-up? Seriously? Headbutt, EX Headbutt, EX Dash Punch? Balrog is far from terrible having terrible wake up options.
Terrible wake up options-Vega, Hakan, Gen (has ONE since they removed his escape from SF4), Dan (not very guaranteed and you need meter always) Makoto (has one and a half, her best one relies on EX Chop invincibility frames) No coincidence these are some of the worst characters in the game.
I like how every time I refresh the page Dream’s post has another paragraph.
I totally agree but I’m too fond of the gimmick to get over my bad overuse habits…but really there’s nothing more satisfying than stuffing T.Hawk/Gief/Balrog/Seth/Rufus/Akuma with some kimchee footstank action. I’m still hung up on this idea that you can hold a fireball for a long enough period that your opponent will forget about it, then you can throw it out and fuck with their momentum. That involves taking some hits AND immobilizing a finger, so it’s probably the worst tactic ever.
IMO you should never store against shotos (except Akumas that depend on air hadoken/vortex) and Cammy. And uhhh…a few others I can’t remember off the top of my head. I want to say Fei Long but I could see him eating a well-placed MK. Haven’t played enough AE to be familiar with DEM YING YANG TWINS and any changes to old characters; for the former I’ve heard they eat fireball characters for lunch so I’d guess it’s a bad idea.
My biggest problem with Juri is that I don’t put the practice time in to learn individual matchups and typically play fighting games with characters where you can learn one general set of rules and apply them to a large portion of the cast. Learning individual matchups is something I’m bad at and wish I could dedicate more time to fixing.
Of course I would recommend Cammy since I play her, just like everybody’s gonna recommend their mains. I can see Fei being a good outlet for Juri-induced frustrations. I used to play Sakura in vanilla too, she’s my preferred shoto but I don’t see enough parallels between her and Juri to say that she’s a good suggestion to switch too.
I’ve been thinking about giving Chunbuns and Guile a spin but I haven’t touched Super in ages. Internships don’t apply for themselves.
lets not forget Rog’s gay ass back dash…
dude teach me Makoto…if we have time during Fight Night…I need to know this bitch…
That’s not quite how I read it. Everyone else, please forgive my interjection -
@Shawn McCool, in reference to your post on the first page
Long ago, the VBulletin staff themselves suggested a 1000 post cap on threads for performance issues (Google it, you’ll see what I’m talking about). The reasons that I continue to enforce this are (A) No one higher up in the SRK food chain told me to stop and (B) it gives users a “fair warning” of when a thread is going to close if you follow the trend, and thus allows others a shot to start a new thread so that one person doesn’t monopolize the thread starting. While it may mean nothing to you, people seem to like the opportunity to start a new thread. This method has worked on SRK for 10+ years, why change it now? Plus, it makes things a little easier to handle in general, especially when it comes to locating information in cached threads from years and years ago, and, while I’m not a DBA, it makes sense to me that shorter thread references that are indexed properly are going to cut the performance overhead overall.
Now - let me tell you how I read the previous post, and if I’m incorrect in my assumptions, please feel free to retort. The “no one bothered to hire anyone who knew” comment and use of the word “amateur” seems to imply that the staff on SRK actually get paid to help do things with this site, and that someone (perhaps me, perhaps another moderator - I’m not real sure where you were going with that) doing so is incompetent because they are not as educated or successful as you. First, I guarantee you that isn’t me - I’ve also been a programmer for close to 15 years, I teach and have taught Computer Technology at a technical college for 5 years as of this May, and I hold multiple degrees and am currently working on a Masters in Computer Science. I understand your frustration, but one thing I can’t stand is when someone interjects their opinion to pad their own ego on an online forum, and that’s how this post looks to me (I apologize if this is an incorrect take on your post, it is simply my opinion. Again, feel free to retort). I feel like your post was a completely unnecessary attack on someone. I hope it wasn’t on me, because that would give me the grounds to ban you I merged the new thread with the previous thread and closed them because the same person started both, and did so “early,” effectively not giving another person a chance to do so.
The bottom line is: you’re preaching to the choir, but this is volunteer work - there are no “professional forum administrators” on here to my knowledge. Personally, I do what I do here because it seems to help the community. Everyone on here is just volunteering, so whether or not they have a CS degree is a little irrelevant. If you have an issue with the way things are done, make a suggestion to the staff to IMPROVE it, don’t badmouth them to others when you think no one is looking to make yourself look better. The world, unfortunately, isn’t perfect, which is why I’m glad there are people like us to try and push the rest of the world in the right direction I wish you the best of success in your business, and hope to see you at FR14.
If you guys get an opportunity, check my friendslist on xbl and add “cutiekittychef” - it’s Sora from GA/TX, he is BY FAR the best Juri I’ve ever played… he uses the stored fireballs amazingly well,… if you don’t know the guy, he was one of the best Testament/Baiken players in the US back in the GG days… iquick/bigopinion give him a go and you’ll see some CRAZY stuff w/ her if he can get a chance to use it…
Well, don’t you have to learn matchups with Blazblue? I know you can’t just rush down everyone in that game…
Honestly the biggest problems anyone has to overcome are the following:
Spacing, not Anti-Airing or knowing all the distancing anti-airs you have, and doing too MANY wake up Ultras/moves…
You get around that stuff the game makes a lot more sense as opposed to jumping too much and getting hit…
Well yeah, but but everyone has a backdash, LOL
Those can be OS’d right?
Pretty sure Dictator can with cr jab/st jab --> cr. lk. ~ cr.RH , Chun cannot while she is on the ground, his back dash is too good and put him outside of Chun’s sweep range (someone correct me if I am wrong). But she can safe jump him on all his wakeup options to make him burn meter. So, I guess it’s not as gay.
orrrrrr you can JUST BLOCK sometimes. lol…
Options Selects shouldn’t even be brought up as something that stops something because you are playing theory fighter and assuming the player you are playing against does that stuff all the time.
I think the logic of Option Selects hinders people’s matchup ideas because they now think other characters beat other characters based on “theory” of those.
For example: Ryu is jumping in with a FP and I am Balrog. Judging distance you already KNOW not to backdash. Do an EX Dash if you think he is not safe jumping. Option Selects only work if you are trying to do silly things to people. If your OPPONENT and I stress this OPPONENT is using them or knows how to get out of them just block.
I mean, you can see a lot of this stuff coming and become accustomed to judging distance but I really don’t think something like Option Select should be brought up unless you understand the ins and outs of your character and you are having issues with someone in particular.
The person that I know that option selects well is Phil (because it seems like he always guesses uppercuts correctly) but if you realize that you can fake out the person doing those and then they become confused and it takes them off their game. It’s all mind games anyway but these Option Selects that choose the best move for you, I still think was always a bad idea for a game but they aren’t so crazy that a move that is really good should be thought less of because of the “possibility” of an Option Select.
This is precisely why Bison players here are worried about Ryu (not picking on Wootsick or Negro Justice) but sometime people get so worried about it they forget to just block or do basic anti airs if your character is not on wake up position.
EDIT: See, Eddie gets it. Let’s blocking! I mean, with all the shit that has changed in this game it’s not like I am doing anything new to anyone from 2 years ago. I still play occasionally and I just adjust to the other player. This happens in every game whether it be the “bullshit of the moment” Roll Canceling, Yun in 3s with annoying idiots shouting HEY HEY HEY like we will hear again in tournaments for Arcade Edition non stop, V ism with crouch cancels, etc…
Just work on footsies and normals and understand and KNOW your character’s stuff and don’t ASSUME anything just because you read about it.
