Computer science should be general education. Unfortunately, the idea that small threads somehow keep the database clean is somewhat silly. There’s many ways that the problem could be solved but alas… Nobody bothered to hire anyone who knew.

Listen to me. As someone who has worked as a programmer for 12 years and as a business consultant and someone who is running a successful business.

When it comes to IT people… Only hire rock stars. What a tour de force can do in 1 hour will trump what an amateur can do it 40. Literally… this is the case… if you try to skimp you will LOSE money…

I would certainly argue that you DO have a responsibility to refrain from blowing smoke in a child’s face. You seem to be venting about certain parents who let their children run wild. That’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about YOUR responsibility. I have no idea why you brought up kids lecturing you on smoking. And I definitely don’t know why you think that children don’t deserve different treatment than adults. Children are fundamentally from the way their brain functions (an enforced limited perspective, an inferior ability to decode complex ideas, etc) toto the impact of chemicals on their body. Their needs are different so they need to be treated differently. That is the reason that civilized societies treat their kids differently, and it’s a very good reason. Adults don’t get special consideration from ALL people that they interact with, but I’d wager that everyone in this thread WOULD give others special consideration. People SHOULD be considerate, it’s their social responsibility to be so. You don’t have to, but you’d be an asshole (someone who takes more than they give).

We need to stop talking about how people do / don’t do things because they’re lazy. It’s a cop-out. People are the way they are due to their situations. We need to be able to understand people and react accordingly rather than just blame others for their inferiority which is not only self-serving but ignorant.

A reasonable amount of objective perspective is required to analyze your responsibility, I suppose. Do you ask people to stop driving their cars to protect your children from the fumes? I’d go so far as to say that if there were reasonable alternatives you’d have to be an asshole NOT to stop driving a pollutant vehicle. We consider the environment as important primarily for our own benefit. The fewer species that survive the more frail the food chain becomes and the more likely we are to face a catastrophe that could leave the planet uninhabitable. When it comes to pollution it’s not just about kids, it’s about humanity. When it comes to your personal responsibility regarding not driving your car, you have to use some amount of reasonable judgment. It’s a silly argument based on hyperbole.

I never brought up any sort of scapegoating and I don’t see the value of your adding it to this discussion.

I never said anything about a child’s needs for independence. I’m specifically talking about the influence one has over others and their responsibility to make their community a better place. Let me be as clear as possible. If you want to live in a better place… it’s your responsibility to work towards that goal, even if it’s something as mundane as respecting others.

Be the change that you want to see in the world.

Individually you know people who are lazy and you know people who have overcome adversity. You know people who have fallen and people who have risen up… There’s a distinction that needs to be made. This isn’t about you and your experiences. This is about specifically asking questions, doing research on large enough of a population to understand it. And specifically taking measures to resolve problems. Saying pointless things like “it’s not the government’s job to blah blah blah” makes no sense and fundamentally shows a lack of understanding for the helplessness of the lower and middle classes.

Anybody can bootstrap, overcome situations, and rise up. Everybody can’t. And that’s not up for debate. We have to decide what we want for humanity.

I seriously question anyone who sides with the best interest of the corporation over the best interest for individuals. Watch “The Corporation” it’s on Netflix.

i don’t even really understand the argument. because not everybody can overcome situations (which, i guess in this case, would be telling your kid “no, you cannot have a happy meal today.”) we should make it illegal for kids to even know a happy meal exists?
