TIMELESS games?

Grim Fandango and Baldur’s Gate 2.

Bahamut Lagoon
Treasure of the Rudras (dat OST kreygasm)

No love for Sonic?

Also, Toejam & Earl holds a sweet spot in my heart

Sonic is definitely not timeless. He hasn’t aged well beyond SA2. His latest incarnation has leprosy apparently.

Magical Drop III on the Neo Geo is DEFINITELY timeless.

I agree that 90% of the modern sonic games suck donkey balls, but Sonic 1-3 are definitely good games and stood the test of time very well.

Matter of fact, to this day I can still play Sonic 1-3 and enjoy it, while other games like MGS 1 and 2 seem TERRIBLY old if I play them now. I enjoyed them a lot back in their days, but the controls are just plain ugly when you’re used to more modern action/stealth games. So from a purely technical standpoint (controls + graphics) Sonic aged much better than MGS 1 and 2.

sonic generations is pretty good as well

starfox 64

Yeah, but there comes a point where you know the stages in and out so it’s not really a “timeless” game like chess or the like.

Unlimited SaGa… I could never beat that game T__T profound sadness

Boobs will always be timeless. Yes, that is a redundant statement, but I said it anyway.

PS1 is nearly unplayable, we’ve comea long way, it’s less playable than FF1 today. PS2 is in many ways less playable than it’s contemporaries as well, more to do with degree of difficulty than mechanics. PS4 is just too easy. Anyone can beat PS4, just like the FF games, just like chronotrigger. PS2 is the game that they can tell you exactly what to do and there is a good chance that you still won’t beat it. Dungeon crawling in PS2 is hard. Too hard for today’s video games generation where you’re supposed to finish, supposed to win. PS2, you aren’t supposed to win. Most PS die hards understand that on most levels, PS4 is the superior game. Arguably better story, arguably better characters, better game mechanics, better graphics. Dummied down difficulty to allow the game to be “accessible”. I find the challenge of PS2 to be more compelling and hence it is way above PS4 in my list.

Landstalker was Sega’s answer to Chronotrigger. PS4 was aimed squarely (get it? ;p) at FF6. Also, PS3 isn’t a PS game. It was almost totally completed before they made the decision to make it into a PS game

For FF7 or PS2? On both, the story continues on quite a bit longer, however, the deaths reverberate and have implications on the protagonists actions all the way to the end. From a story telling perspective, those are the turning points that send the protagonists down the paths that ultimately lead to success.

Huh? That would eliminate of ton of games, including MMX and plenty of other platformers, from being considered timeless.

If you want to still challenge yourself when you know stage layouts you could always speedrun.

So many STGs could go on this list though. Some from the Gradius series series, R-Types, Darius, Raiden/Fighters, CAVE games, Treasure’s games, Raizing’s Battle Garegga and Batrider, Qute/M-kai’s Eschatos and Judgement Silversword, and tons of others. Can attempt to beat scores forever.

That’s the whole point of the thread, discussing games that came out some time ago but are still enjoyable to this day. For example, even though they did away with the breasts, Magical Drop V is still enjoyable on my Android when I’m waiting at the mechanic or airport, or etc… (The World is still hella cute doe, no joke.)

Technos’ nes Double Dragon II and River City Ransom. They’re fine as is, but up the multiplayer to 4, add netplay, double the enemies onscreen an boom: perfect. No need to update the graphics.

Einhänder.

I played the fuck out of the playstation magazine demo version of that. I never got to own it but I did acquire it less than legally and played it. I kind of wish there was an Einhander 2. With the way he camera shifts worked in that game I bet it’d be an amazing fit for the 3DS.

Timeless means unaffected by shifts in culture or technology. A timeless game isn’t one that you can play forever without mastering or knowing everything, but rather a game that is worth playing, is as poignant and enjoyable today as it was when it first came out. A timeless game is the opposite of a dated game.

People know everything about the original legend of zelda. EVERYTHING. But the game’s mechanics and design are so strong while also combined with an iconic art style that has changed pop culture has allowed it to remain a game just as good today as it was then despite the advances in technology.

The original Mario had such strong level design, fantastic controls, and simple yet rewarding mechanics that people around the world to this day still play it. Not just for speed runners or nostalgia but they introduce the game to their kids who then enjoy it despite all of the amazing graphics and extra buttons and such in new games they usually end up embracing the original Mario for the fantastic timeless game it is.

Some games were really good for their day but advances in technology as well as improvements in control responses, improved art, or game design theory has rendered them feeling “dated” a great example is Mortal Kombat 1 which while still fun really shows it’s age graphically and control wise. The game also has a very distinct “90s” attitude about it. The shock factor no longer works either.

Typically speaking, games that are designed around graphical elements as the core, especially attempting REALISTIC graphics rarely hold the test of time.

Just wanted to add a few that I think I didn’t see (but I was skimming so might be wrong)

Dungeon Keeper. Nothing else quite like it.
Gunstar Heroes is pure unadulterated action goodness.
Full Throttle.

…okay these are just some of my favourite games but they remain my favourite games for a reason.
