TIMELESS games?

The climax was straight ripped from Phantasy Star 2.

You do realize that doesn’t devalue it right?

I still don’t get what you mean by the Big N stealing that scene. Who is the Big N?

Nintendo stole the death of Aeris from the PS2 death of Nei scene. No one had done that until PS2, kill off the awesome side kick character and use it as a launching pad to kick off the much faster paced second act. I love the Final Fantasy franchise. I replay all the 8-16 bit games every few years. Right after I replay all of the Phantasy Star games and Chronotrigger.

Sorry, I should say that Square stole the scene, I still think of Square as a Nintendo subsidiary.

lol yea as I said before Nintendo has jack shit to do with FF7, shit had me scratchin my head.

I’m sure if we really really tried we could come up with a game that has killed side characters before, I highly doubt PS2 is the first to do it, and again, that doesn’t devalue it in either game. Exacution>Originality (Tho when both are harmony it is bliss.)

Nei wasn’t a side character, she was arguably the most important character to the story at the time of her death, just like Aeris. The build up and tension was identical and the sense of impending doom as well. Trust me, I like both games, I played both games when they came out. It’s pretty clear that Square was abusing the fact that not many people actually played through PS2 and…strongly paying homage I guess you’d say.

I apologize, my mistake, it wasn’t that long ago that Square left, so forgive me if I forgot for a second.

You don’t have to apologize lol, i just thought it was odd is all lol.

This is the first time I’ve seen someone mention this. For like 2 years in high school me and my friends used to have tournaments SPECIFICALLY on the minigames for Stadium 1 and 2. 4 player pokemon stadium IS THE SHIT.

Agreed on Manhunt. I’ve never played a game that plays similarly to that one.

In terms of actual games which will hold up for a long time, simple stuff like Angry Birds and most of your mobile games are gonna be around for a while. They are not modern (therefore not dated), and their appeal is that they are simple and easy to get into.

Also, the Genesis version of TMNT Tournament Fighters.

Contra(the one you can get on xbox arcade is shit)
Road Rash 3
Rock n Roll racing
Streets of Rage 1-3
Ninja Gaiden

+1.
Game is gahlike, but when http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/NothingIsScarier is how the entire game runs, and depict that theme as well as SH games do…
Fuck that.

FUCK that.

I’ll refer to a quote by Stephen King to get my point across, because this sort of thing has me literally dead silent where I sit/stand every time I end up in one personally(the town I live in is creepily empty late at night, AND it has sodium-based street lights; looks like I have jaundice, tonight! GAH) or play through one:

“The 3 types of terror: The Gross-out: the sight of a severed head tumbling down a flight of stairs, it’s when the lights go out and something green and slimy splatters against your arm. The Horror: the unnatural, spiders the size of bears, the dead waking up and walking around, it’s when the lights go out and something with claws grabs you by the arm. And the last and worse one: Terror, when you come home and notice everything you own had been taken away and replaced by an exact substitute. It’s when the lights go out and you feel something behind you, you hear it, you feel its breath against your ear, but when you turn around, there’s nothing there…”
I’m completely desensitized to #1, and #2 is something I function fully through, but it is tough.

#3?

I can’t work through that kind. I can’t adjust to that; there’s nothing to adjust to.

Another relevant quote from him:
“We make up horrors to help us cope with the real ones.”

Considering the sort of nightmare fuel fiction has, collectively?
Yeah.

Vampires and stuff like that? Non-existent.
…Worse things, in the most literal sense of word(no other fits because said thing is undefinable)?

We can’t say they DON’T exist. We haven’t exactly gotten far past our own solar system.
If we ever successfully get to space, someday, we may find that we weren’t the first, if you catch my drift.

Funny; kinda like God.
Gods aren’t necessarily good.

Insert a list of my favorite games.

Condemn games that are not my favorite.

If you’re going accuse Square of ripping of the original Phantasy Star series, at least mention the good one. Alys’s death in Phantasy Star 4 was far more emotional than either Aeris’s or Nei’s. Not to mention PS4 holds up today much better than 1-3. They were all good for their time, but 4 is the only one I would recommend today. And I do recommend it today. Seriously, as far as 16-bit jrpgs go, PS4 is Sega’s answer to FF6 and Chrono Trigger.

just gonna list a whole bunch of old games…

SF2 – 'nuff said
Deathtrack – racing, weapons, and interesting driver designs.
Mechwarrior 1 – The game could go on forever if you wanted it to.
Day of the Tentacle – or any Lucasgames adventure game from that era, really.
Silent Hill series – for the screwed-up, rusted-metal, blood-crusted otherworld that came with the air raid sirens.

that was a climax on a low level, the story goes waaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy beyond that

Previously I kept my list pre-2000s

Here are a couple of post 2000 entries I think will end up standing the test of time even in another 10 years and beyond (specifically ones not yet mentioned int he thread for those looking for games to check out)

Psychonauts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychonauts
Okami http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ōkami (probably the newest game I’d put on this list) this is hands down the best non-official Zelda game. I’d argue it is on par with some of the best ACTUAL Zelda titles in that particular genre.
Halflife and Half Life 2 (Some of the best atmospheric storytelling around. Great environments and puzzles, good solid level design (other than Xen).
Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katamari_Damacy only these two entries need be on the list. Both are worthy. Simply unbridled FUN and always room for a better score.
Viewtiful Joe - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viewtiful_Joe (Another Clover classic that has amazing depth to it’s gameplay and great artstyle that ages well due to cel shading.)

Okami is a great one, totally deserves it.

I pre-ordered 3 months before it came out on PS2. By the end of the 3 month wait only 1 other guy had pre-ordered :frowning: Also I ended up having that copy stolen few years back :((((
Still I bought it for Wii and I bought Okamiden for DS (very fun game worth your time, not quite the magic or scale of the original title but very fun none the less.)
I’d buy it again on Xbox/PS3 if I owned one lol.

I tend to end up buying games on release that turn into “cult” games no one else buys but are often remembered fondly by everyone somehow. Madworld, Mirror’s Edge, No More Heroes, Zak and Wiki, Psychonauts, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Guitaroo Man, Odin Sphere, Tatsunoko vs Capcom, Ico, Disgaea, and Killer7 are all games I bought day1 lol.
