"Time to get serious!" Hakan Match-up Thread

So I thought I’d just suggest a few SS dive tips for irregular wake-up characters.

For Zangief, T.Hawk, Guile, Sagat, Adon and Vega, slide/press, c.mp/buffer 360 into back walk, lk dive works as a mix-up, although I wouldn’t recommend it for Vega, for obvious reasons.

For Chun-Li and Ibuki, slide/press, s.mp/buffer 360 into back walk, lk dive works well, as they wake up faster.

If you do typical SS dive set ups for these characters, they are able to jump out of them, unfortunately. Chun-Li and Ibuki require earlier timing, too, so that ruins easy mp rocket, forward jump, mk dive for them, sadly.

Against Sagat in the oil trap, instead of oily f.hk, knock-down, back dash, walk forward, lk dive, use walk back, mk dive. I also recommend against these characters, when oily, instead of oily slide/press, back dash, walk forward mk dive, use walk back, hk dive. Do it a couple frames quicker for Chun and Ibuki and slower for Gief, Hawk and Vega.

Lastly, a nice technique against Chun Li is slide/press s.lp, neutral jump hk. It’s safe against EX bird kick!

So, went to Final Round, etc etc. I did pretty badly but theres one thing of note: I played a pretty good Gief.

That being said, I can say with confidence that the matchup is 6/4 Hakan.

S.fp is godlike every where. Is he poking with s.mp? S.fp. Is he looking to s.lk you? S.fp. Is he doing nothing? S.fp.

Really, all you’ll have to end up looking for is a good EX GH during footsies and jumps. When you take care of jumps, Gief is fucked. As far as EX GH, that depends entirely on the Gief (I lost one round because I didn’t respect it. During the final round of the set, i remembered how I lost that previous round and started to adapt; i.e., stop throwing out pokes).

On wakeup, back the fuck up if he has meter. If he doesn’t, meaty slide all dai. Of course, don’t try anything funny afterwards (Backdash is my favorite however).

On YOUR wakeup, you get fucked up pretty hard. Try thinking it through and not rushing your decision.

Ummmm… yeah. That’s about it. Also, oiling up isn’t really worth it in this matchup. Theres much better options you can use.

I’ve pretty much quit SSF4, but when AE is released, I will return and edit (after playing around with Hakan for a while) every single character post with updated strategies, new thread, and I want more opinions from everyone. Maybe have a 1-2 days for each character or something and work on it as a community.

I have a dream… that one day… Hakan will be looked at and judged as a decent character, not by the color of his skin.

Sounds good, be glad to help.

New Hakan here,

@Chron this thread is amazing, probably the best i ve read on this forum !
I have a few noob question regarding your guide, i hope i m in the good thread…

What do you mean by “Crossup j.hk: whiff mp” ?
Because i can’t manage do do a cross up whith Hakan… Does it mean that you have to do something with mp after the jump ?

Uncrouchable Oil Dive: X is one of those basic characters on wakeup so basic setups work
Can you briefly explain what is a basic Oil dive setup ? I understant that you can hold the button so the reversal wiff, but is there anything else ?

Really noob questions, but i m sure it would be pretty usefull for the new Hakan users…

Crossing up with Hakan is tough but possible. If it says “whiff mp” try instead to whiff lp and walk forward a very tiny bit instead and then jump hk, so that the hk comes out just past the apex of the jump. In some cases, e.g. against Cody, use j.mk. HK will whiff.

Just look through the SS Dive compendium to get set ups, really. If “basic oil dive set ups” work, that means the ones that we list as generic set ups will work. Only a couple of characters create problems, e.g. Chun Li and Ibuki.

thanks man

I’m making some small changes to this and I wanna really start working on the yang and yun matchup eventually.

Abel - not much changed. On a blocked wheel kick you can get a poke slide combo. Something else I noted, if Able does a change of direction close up, you can punish a blocked 1st change of direction with an unoiled reversal rocket.

Adon - It said his wakeup got slower, but you still need to whiff fwd+lp to make the j.hk safe. All reversal jaguar kicks will whiff so be prepared to slide punish. Slide wakeup is still not safe. Since they took away the EX flash from jaguar tooth, sliding on reaction is NOT SAFE. Instead, try using fwd+mp on reaction. It will air reset Adon, but you won’t have time to get in a lk oil shower. Or you can block the Jaguar Tooth, only EX is punishable by U1.

Random fact, Hakan can FADNC cr.LK’s between Yun’s target combo (3-hit elbow to palm). Match-up is still pretty bad because of Hakan’s limited offensive options.

Edit: Whoops, thought this was the general thread! Moving other info.

Akuma - no major changes against Akuma that would affect your gameplan. When he knocks you down, just know when he’s going for a safejump so you don’t waste U2 and try to keep a bar for EX SPD.

Honestly I don’t see many changes in the guide with AE now that I’m going through this. It’s really just looking at the changes and changing them based on that, if at all. I’ll probably just run through them and change them. If I run into something like Adon’s EX jaguar tooth, I’ll post it on here but other than that I won’t post this for every character.

Hi Chron, just want to salute you with the efforts of putting this thread together in the first place. GG  Definitly the best on srk!

I’ve taken the liberty to do something in your format for the twins > What to do with Yun or Yang? , so feel free to use it fully and make any changes at your will.

:qcf::hp:~ “Hakannnnnnnnn” ~:hp:

Thanks. I actually wanted to work on the yun guide tonight. I will definitely read over this thread and spend a couple hours in the lab testing stuff out. U read my mind. Yun is the one match I want to know 100% before SB

Trade some info-

U2 doesn’t completely shut down Hyakkishu if the Gouken is a smart player. He will bait your U2 and counter ultra.

Just saying.

And that jumping command grab you guys do on wake up that grabs on the first frame or whatever…that’s some bullshit right there. Can’t jump it, I need to use meter to get out. Can it be blocked or ducked?

That’s true, but a smart Hakan player would be aware of this, so you trying to bait him means a whole lot less pressure on his wakeup, so it works both ways.

Oil dive can’t be blocked, it can be ducked, although if it’s setup properly on your wakeup it grabs you on your standing frames. You can try mashing backdash, but I’m pretty sure there’s some setups that will catch backdashes. Just a guessing game really.

We might add that a well-timed crouching normal will beat a wake-up oil dive, but the timing is strict. Back dash is definitely your best bet for most characters. With Gouken, however, he can use his low parry, and that will duck under the dive. My brother tended to use that on me, and it worked way too well. Irritating to an oil dive freak like me.

Oh yeah, i forgot about that. Nice one Mordie.

Yeah Climaxter I wouldn’t advise cr.jab on your wake-up all the time against Hakan lol.

Gouken cr.jab is a bit of a bad joke anyway. So just to be clear, the oil dive is when he is on the floor and then leaps at you and bear hugs you kind of like his super…am I correct? Then rocket dive is the super itself?

Anyway, another thing to look out for if you want to do U2 on wake up is Gouken’s air tatsu. He can jump at you and cancel into this after you activate your ultra. He just helicopters away but I don’t think he recovers fast enough to punish you.

Christ, I had an 8 win-streak at an arcade ended by a flowchart Ryu that simply jumped back RH and fireballed. Again, don’t be an impatient dumbass like me, doing full-screen HP slides. Carefully lead him to the corner and shut down his options. LP Slide his jump-ins, fwd.MP his jump-backs in the corner, and if you have super, grab him out of the air on reaction.

Ha! So here is a cool dry set up against Bison’s wake-up EX stomps: slide/press, stutter-step back dash lk dive (which will whiff safely if he does EX stomp), OR slide/press, stutter-step back dash, shake for a split second to fake a move and continue to walk back a bit, jump backward to punish EX stomp with j.mk, c.mk xx slide/press. Lastly, you can stutter-step backdash, f.mp (fake dive), OS forward dash. If they block, you don’t dash. If they EX stomp, your dash comes out, and they whiff, giving you time to punish with c.mk xx slide. Of course, if you whiff due to a back dash, you dash forward in that case, too.

This will be fun for me. I used to HATE EX stomp on wake-up. Now I want him to do it :). This will work better with the sped up oil dive, actually, but for now, it should work reasonably well. As far as positioning, it’s a 70/30 in Hakan’s favor. If you successfully dive, you end up with very good position. If you don’t dive, you lose some position but not massive amount. Thoughts? What else could we mix in? As a side note, ex scissors takes very little damage against dive. You can also bait that out with f.mp, if you do that earlier or just bait it out with shaking.

Cool, I always wanted a legit solution for that move. Another one I like is Safe jump setup, Jump RH > OS f.mp. If he doesn’t do the followup in the sky and just falls with EX stomp you’ll whiff underneath him and you can hit him with ultra 1

Well, now that the AE 2012 changes have been posted, I think a lot of Hakans match-ups will change quite a bit. Hopefully Chron will be right on the scene.

So maybe we can get some thoughts on this?

Personally, I think Honda will become a lot easier, I’ll be oil-diving his ass all day erry day
