Thing is the safe slides are pretty much all the same from Chrons writeup, I was thinking we were just going to merge these together and put them in a new thread? As for dives, yeah, well I could put those in, although the dive setups are pretty universal now. I’ll have my new video soon with all the catch all dives
Rose player here. This is the format we use for our matchup thread. Hopefully you guys find it useful and adapt it to suit Hakan’s matchups.

Spoiler
Matchup Figure: 5 -5 generally speaking, although I feel Oiled Hakan wins 6-4
General Strategy
Against Abel, your goal is to simply score a knockdown. Every knockdown Hakan has is a hard knockdown, and it’s from this position that you should go to town. Because of hakans changes to his oil dives, and the fact that he’s oiled a lot longer, his mix up game has become much more potent.
Sadly for Abel, this has probably had the most dramatic effect in matchup terms. Basically, Abel can’t use any reversals, aside from the risky EX falling Sky, to avoid oil dives…EX TT, EX roll, EX CoD, normal roll…TT, they all get beat. But wait, at least he can backdash out right? Nope, because there’s now the all purpose dives. So this means, in a lot of instances, his only option is to attempt to crouch normal on wake-up. I won’t hesitate in saying this but if you score a knockdown on Abel, go in. Just go for it, pressure him with oil dives, then add in some safe slide pressure/Oil Rockets. If he has meter then watch out for EX TT, but this is easily baited out. Try to OS grab/dive off of jump ins to catch any EX roll/backdash attempts. Abel struggles against pressure, so pressure him. Once he’s been forced into relying on crouching normals, he’s at your mercy.
Use meaty attacks, Oil Rockets, Safe jumps, frametraps…and you can end, or at least take a lot of life from him.
Picking Ultras
I use Ultra 1 in this matchup. The reason I choose Ultra 1 against Abel is because it’s so easy to get in, if you’re confident with your Ultra setups, you can make a safe bet you’re going to get a ton of chances to land one. One advanced tactic while oiled is to focus level 1 through stepkick, and then reset into ultra off say a st.mp for example. Not difficult at all, and the payoff is huge. You need to be thinking along these lines as a Hakan player, get creative!
There’s also some advanced tactics such as backdashing on abels wakeup baiting the EX roll, and then reacting by ending your backdash in Ultra 1 for a massive punish. Again not difficult and with a huge return, especially if you have Abel scared on wakeup.
Far-Range/Fireball Game
At far range the only thing you should be worried about is HK wheel kick, which you can reversal LK oil dive, which is bad news for Abel, so don’t be afraid to bait this out. Watch what the Abel’s tendencies are after you oil up. If he likes to dash in multiple times, keep a note of this and get ready to catch him on his way in with f.mp. You don’t need to rush anything in the abel match, all you’re doing is looking for one knockdown, so playing it smart can give you a real advantage. Yep, no starting off the match with slides!
EX oil fullscreen is strong against Abel because there’s really not much he can nab you with if you cancel it, use this to your advantage.
Midrange/Footsies Game
Footsies wise hakan wins, oiled anyway. In general, I feel like oiled hakan is too strong for Abel, he has too many options. The sad thing for Abel is that focus attack is godlike against stepkick. If you land level 1 focus against stepkick, which isn’t difficult at all…he’s in trouble. Stepkick leaves Abel standing so in this position you can use Hakans vast array of standing resets with oil dives, which lead to horrendous damage, then a knockdown…then another mixup. Without oil it’s a much more even affair, try to stay just outside of stepkick range, get ready to nab jump-ins with st.hp, or f.lp which is really strong against Abel. Unoiled try not to use f.mp into slide too much if you don’t have the meter or ultra, you’ll likely end up in a situation you don’t want to be in. Use st.mp, st.hp to make it difficult for Abel to approach.
While oiled, use Hakans max range f.hk to sniff for a knockdown. Once you’ve got the knockdown, use backdash > forward dash > LK oil dive for a high percentage setup and a great momentum starter. From Abels stepkick range, focus attacks is really hard for him to deal with, because any loose step kick he throws out which gets caught, is going to send him into the grinder, and he’ll likely lose a good chunk of health. So when you’re in and around this range, try and make use of focus attack. The same goes for when he’s hitting you with st.lks, don’t be afraid to let the focus go, it’s likely you’ll get in one way or another, either through st.lk or step kick.
Anti-air
Abel is pretty easy to anti-air for Hakan. F.lp is pretty godlike in this MU, use it to catch neutral jumps for the most part, and either catch him on the way down with an uncrouchable HK dive, or dash in SPD, or go for a jump from there to create some pressure/catch a backdash. St.hp and f.mp work well also, so use these to deter him from jumping in. Otherwise don’t jump in on abel foolishly, especially if he’s stocking Ultra 1. Get a knockdown first and then look to apply jump in pressure.
When you’re oiled parry through jump ins to create some pressure. If you keep doing this, just watch out for empty jump TTs. If he starts doing this, just squat him out of the sky with st.hp.
Punishing
As mentioned before, punish wheelkicks with LK oil dive, HK wheel kicks with Ultra 1. The standard stepkick punish with focus attack is level 1 focus > f.mp > slide.
There might be some confusion about this but you should be able to punish Change of direction with Ultra 1. Though I have seen it whiff completely in one instance, whether it was a freak incident who knows. Will need further testing. (Drews note: come back to this)
You can option select grab off of safe jump setups to catch EX roll, so if you’ve been destroying Abel on his wake up, keep this in mind. Also use LK oil dive OS to catch backdashes in the same situations. Ultra 1 is highly punishable, so you can respond with anything, same with his Super.
Defending Against Pressure and Mixup
If abel does score a TT against you, hakan has some really good options against the mixup. backdash is an obvious one, although you might end up forward dashing, so it’s still a guess in the end. A better one to use would be backdash parry, because if Abel ends on either side, you’ll blow through any normal, including crouching hp, as long as that’s a backdash cancel. EX rocket is also a good option, and if you can nail this early on, you’ve put a massive dent into his game, because now he’s likely to jump, which allows you to backdash out for free, or you could wait…and punish the jump in. Little things like this can go a long way
So if you block a stepkick, you’re usually worried about TT. Never be afraid to backdash, hakan has one of the best in the game while Oiled, so make use of this. You’re also best off, against a very acute Abel player, to use backdash into CC. This is good because it completely ducks under stepkicks, and gives you a free command grab/ultra punish, so adapt to the situation. Another sneaky option, if you have good reactions, is to use EX dive, which will completely stuff any normal throw/TT attempts after step kicks, for a HUGE momentum swing. Again, if Abel is at that standing light kick/step kick range, just let the focus go, he has nothing there that will mess you up aside from a random wheel kick, which leaves him in a bad spot if blocked.
Applying Pressure and Mixup
Abel has never been strong against pressure, and it’s no different in this match. Hakan has the ability to leave Abel on his ass for long periods of time, so as long as your mixup game is reasonably good, you should be doing fair amounts of damage. For example, you just landed a f.mp > slide combo, you go for empty jump HP SPD. After this, go for empty jump forward MK dive. You’ve just done 600 damage with a couple of high percentage mixups, and you have another mixup afterwards! It would be pretty easy to take the oil here, but look what happens when you decide to really mess the opponent up on their wakeup. This needs to be your way of thinking in this MU.
Hakan has the ability with oil and with meter, to create pressure out of nothing. This is why Hakan murders Abel from midrange. Hakan can put Abel in 50/50 situations quicker than Abel can put him in 50/50 situations! Using f.mp from maxrange can really give Abel a hard time, and if he blocks it, you can cancel it into slide FADC > cr.lks for instant pressure. Tick the first cr.lk into SPD, and the opponent is unlikely to know what hit him. After this you can extend the strings which gives the opponent more time to think ‘OH SHIT, JUMP!’ and you can make him pay with airgrab, jump mp, or a a combo into slide, and the process starts over. This type of pressure can really mess Abel up, because he already has the whole wakeup game to worry about. Something I say when I have Abel in the corner, or anyone even…with Oil, and a full stock of meter is…GO IN. Abel doesn’t really have many answers to a barreling in Hakan intent on wiping him out, any jump is easily parried, or hit with st.hp. Stay at that range where you can punish EX roll with SPD. If he has no meter, he’s in trouble.
Option Selects
OS sweep is the perfect OS against Abel, although only truly works off cr.lk’s when he’s oiled. You can use something like meaty st.mp > cr.hk to catch backdashes as well. It’s also really strong off of safejumps. After the cr.hk connects, go for dash x 2 LK oil dive, another high percentage play with great reward. You can also OS f.hk in the same scenario for slightly more damage, except it’s not as easy and doesn’t quite give you the same stability as the simple cr.hk OS when blocked.
J.hk > lk dive is also strong, you can catch backdashes in this way, EX rolls, and on hit/block you’ll also get the uncrouchable setup, so abuse this as much as you can to keep him guessing. OS slide can also be used, but I prefer dive because of the damage and positioning.
Additional Resources
Really hard finding noteworthy videos on this MU, if anyone has any tips send them this way.
Video 1, not the greatest example of the MU, but this shows a general idea of how to play it, patience, and making the most of knockdowns, although a i goof up on a few occasions. Also shows how good f.lp is here!

Video 2, from Super but still a good example of how to pressure Abel on his wakeup and also a great showing of footsies from Wildcat, oiled and unoiled!

Concluding Tips
Always keep in mind when Abel has meter and is under pressure, EX TT is always close by, and is the last thing you want to get tagged by. Backdash covers this, and also covers EX roll, so you’re covering two options there, able to punish each. This is especially strong in the corner.
If you focus level 1 through step kick, you have a world of options. A simple but very damaging reset is Focus level 1 > f.mp > HK Oil Dive. Great damage plus hard knockdown, extra meter, and another mixup opportunity. You can also extend the possible damage with meter. For example: Focus attack level 1 > f.mp > FADC > f.mp > EX dive.
While oiled, Abel can’t OS ultra you, because you can cancel backdash into CC at any point to completely avoid it. He can OS sweep you however. This is where backdash DNC comes in, this is really effective against Abel because it’s unlikely he’s going to be pressing hard hitting normals up close, most likely light attacks or throws, which DNC jabs with always beat, and will prevent any OS attempts. Use this advanced but extremely strong defensive technique to get out of trouble and start your own offense.
So remember, make each knockdown count! Show Abel who really is the mixup master!
Better?
I’ve added a few new things in as well.
Hellz Yeah…
How do you guys feel about the Seth match up? I was at super arcade last week and I played a guy who is probably the second best Seth in Socal, behind online tony. Once you’re unoiled, Hakan is in a lot of trouble, especially if Seth has u1. Is there anything Hakan has for this?
ex oil cancel to bait out the U1 would be a solution. If not I just jump forward and back with mp or mk to confuse him. Hoping for an opening. It also depends on how he plays. Either turtling with his sonic boom and pokes or wall jumping on you. If he is close, it is a guessing game.
Doesn’t work. U1 grabs coward crouch. Super will hit too, even from full screen.
Does it hit? I did not know. But what I mean was just cancel the ex oiling move right after you start putting oil. You should have been recovered from coward crouch and would be able to block the U1. I am not sure about whether you can counter U1 with a oiled ex-slide. Does that go under the U1?
No, it doesn’t recover quick enough. U1 doesn’t behave like a projectile. It is essentially a full screen, blockable grab. I think against a good Seth, Hakan is just boned.
With oil i think, it is not so hard after you knock him down once. In principal, you only need few combos to kill him. However, unoiled this will be hard still you get chance to get a bit of oil by trading blood.
Played against an A ranked Gen.
Hakan vs Gen is in Gen’s favor, hands down.He can lame you out by just running back and then spamming ogas since you can’t really counter it and U2 is too easy to bait out. And upkicks pretty much destroys your wakeup game, its ridiculous.
EDIT: I did not use CC at all. But based on how the match played out, it was not easy. Need something to stop oga because right now its basically free.
I would never take a blood~oil trade against a Seth. That trade would most likely result in a knockdown into a crossup OS shoryuken or some other unpredictable mixup that will dry out Hakan by the time you find a way out of it anyway. I find it’s best to just wait it out and make your punishes and few mixups count. Normals normally trade in your favor and even if he had a perfect going and you’re at 30% health, landing Hakan’s U1 followed by a subsequent mixup will kill him.
I feel using U1 is too much risk with him. His meaty SRK will beat it and Seth’s love to do it. Its really hard to not get knock down by Seth.
Well conversely, being loaded with an U2 makes them want to bait it out, because as useful as it is, it is still a stationary antiair. Most Seths as well as other characters immediately change their playstyle once you have U2 so that you’re most likely never going to get to use it at all. It almost feels like the threat of U2, is where its utility lies, because they’ll deliberately avoid being aerial and limit their options to avoid risk of slipping on it. You’re better off trying to get an offensive going while hoarding the Ultra meter.
I am all too aware of the meaty SRK though, I have lost to it many times and with meter forget about it. blockedSRK>FADC> is such an evil mixup. My biggest issue with Seth though is the corner mixups following toe tap resets, OH MY GAWD is there anything to be done about this when dry?! It’s so confusing because he has so many options to get you right as you land. Oil helps a bit when you can FADNC his SRK, but then he could also just 360 throw you, which can be avoided by a BDNC, but that loses to an SRK! EX Rockets lose to both and EX Dives lose to SRKS. Cr.techs are practically useless.
As you said, I use U2 just to limit their options… He is such a BS character :-/
well at this point in time, the most reliable thing for me against seth is using the following once you knock him down, slide or dive.
Must abuse to capitalise your pressure for chance to damage.
otherwise you’ll be back to square one = defending & getting mix-uped = in seth’s favor gradually.
[ Slide-press > f.dash > j.hk os hk.dive > s.lp etc combo ]
-best timing when dry, otherwise need tiny tiny delay when oilded before the j.hk
-if seth has u1 dont do. u2 will still get you but dmg not as great so sometimes i do it purpose int he early games to waste his ultra.
-if seth dragons/throw you should be in all favor
-seth can ‘sometimes’ escape this by teleporting towards you, but then you’ll be diving to the other end of the screen so still ok.
if seth does teleporting towards you alot, just dont do the OS part, and you’ll be able to s.lp > etc combo him.
[ Dive > f.jump > f.j.hk OS hk.dive (into him again)]
-if seth dragons/throw you should be in all favor
Other than this there is really no advantage against his wake-ups.
This match up is like honda, but i think more focus on defending than patience.
air-air you have more upper hand compare to honda.
So is Ibuki always a 8-2 mathcup? I mean if its a Ibuki player that just does Tsumuji its GG, nothing Hakan can do.
