For it to be an investment, her new house has to be worth far more than the cost of purchasing the old house, doing the demolition, and doing the new construction. I’m going to go ahead and guess she didn’t do her homework at all. Its not an investment, she just flushed the money down the toilet. This isn’t how you go about investing in real estate.
First of all no one here is mad at her for that. Bringing that up was simply a means of showing how fucked up divorce laws are.

We don’t know exactly what her plans are for the property, so the jury is still out on that. She might turn a profit on it at the end, or she might just live there, no one knows yet. Either way, people bulldoze mansions to build new ones all the time. It’s her money to do what she pleases with it, and getting mad at her for how she spends her money is pointless. Getting mad at her for how she GOT her money is doubly pointless, because it wasn’t her fault.
Just getting mad at her in general is silly, cuz no one really knows shit about her. I actually have much more respect for her buying it for herself as opposed to trying to flip it. It’s pretty crazy for someone who has no prior experience in real estate to take on a $12 million dollar venture like that. Assuming she’s going to try to end up with something bigger and better she’s probably going to end up out about $50-60 mil. The rule of thumb in housing is that it costs twice as much to furnish a place as it does to build it, and someone who tears down a $12 million dollar place is probably going to buy some exotic expensive shit.

Really? Source? I mean, I’m not a real estate investor yet, but I try to read up on it in my spare time. And what she did sounds stupid.
North Palm Beach Florida is not NYC or Hollywood. The value of the lot isn’t going to be that much (relatively speaking), so you have to figure the value of the mansion was at least 6 million or so. That looked like a 10,000 sq ft house. If she wanted to just buy the land to do construction, she could have found the shittiest house there. I highly doubt there wasn’t something in North Palm Beach that cost less than 12 million and had the same lot size. And then we get to the cost of construction. She doesn’t strike me as someone who knows anything about building a house, so you have to figure she’ll spend another 6 million or so paying the builders and such. Then there’s the hidden cost of the builders doing a shitty job or cutting corners (they’ll take advantage of her stupidity and milk her for her cash), and her needing to maintenance on it.
FINALLY, she got 100 million in the settlement, and when all is said and down the cost of building a new property will probably be 20 million or so. That’s sinking 20% of her cash monies in a down economy, where property values are going to continue spiraling downward. So yeah this was a terrible investment. She’s gonna blow through all her earnings in no time.
If everything you say is true, and she ends up “blowing” 20 million dollars on a house she will probably end up living in, this will leave her with… 80 million dollars.
What do we actually know about her? We know about her bulldozing 1 house (Of which the jury is still out on whether or not it’ll end up being a bad investment because we don’t actually know what she’s going to build on that property) and then to go from that one thing we know and turn and say she’s gonna blow through all her money in no time is pretty snappy a judgement to make. Her not striking you as someone who knows anything about building a house is… well… subjective at best. Not everyone who wants a house built knows shit about building houses. That’s what you have real estate agents and contractors for. It’s not like we know the inner workings of how this decision got made. We have no proof she’s doing this on her own, without professionals helping her.
And even if she DOES blow through all her money, why does it matter to the news? Why does it matter to anyone but her? This is just a classic case of sensationalistic journalism pandering to the masses of people who want to be distracted from their own issues just long enough to pass judgement on strangers and be pointlessly angry about things that have nothing to do with them.
