Tiger Construction: Sagat Match-up Thread

I don’t think Claw or Dic are bad matches, IMO they are pretty much 5-5 you just have to know how to play them. Just like with Ryu where you have to stay outside his sweep and cr.mk range at all costs in order to have the match in your favor, against them you also have to find the sweet spot where they can’t harass you with their normals. Chun is also 5-5ish and I agree with what Joe said, before she gets U1 its slightly in Sagat’s favor, but once she has U1 you better have the lifelead and patience to win the rest of the match.

So what can Sagat really do against Yang? I feel like I get walked down all day and then at sweep range I’m in a spot where I can’t do much of anything. Between that and that crouching two hit move that breaks focus and buffered low forwards I don’t really know how to handle this match and just get locked down.

I feel like you can zone Yang out pretty effectively, vary your anti airs between st.hk, j.hp and tiger uppercut if he jumps, mix up your tiger shots so he can’t focus through them so easily (slow and fast ones, as well as preemptive anti air hp tiger shots) and just try to stay away as much as possible. I feel like st.mk is a pretty good button in that match, and so is cr.hp in case you are getting walked down too much (I feel like cr.hp is a good button against that in most matchups)

You just basically have to react to how the opponent wants to deal with your fireballs and in what ranges. If they keep neutral jumping your fireballs when you are far away from them and you are in the lifelead then keep doing it because they have to make the next move really. If they try to focus them, then throw a slow tiger shot and if they try to focus dash forward then meet them with a fast kara shot or even normal one, if they try to forward jump then be ready with the kara dp, really not much else to that matchup than properly zoning him out and varying up your anti airs between st.hk, air to air j.hp and tiger uppercut. You can also use f+hk but its not an anti air you can reliably use unless they jump in a really obvious way. And again if they don’t jump, then dont be scared to throw plasma, once you established that you can’t get jumped in on, most of the time people will try a different approach, you just have to be ready to change up your zoning to suit your opponents approach.

That helped, thanks. Still hard, but at least competitive now. Just had to sit back and fireball harder.

ok dudes, im needing some reminders on the blanka matchup.

It’s getting to be a curse in the tournaments to having a coin flip match against a blanka player and it’s starting to get to me.

Instead of talking shit and worrying about some else game. Shut the fuck up and just worry about ur own game. Try that, You might actually learn something kid

Blanka? Is that a joke

Gen has some tools to bypass fireballs, but he has to charge to use half of them. Ex.roll and ex.walldive both go through fireballs, and he obviously has FADC and two jump ranges. I would suggest blockstringing him away and look for either sweep or jump at that range. Jump at that range will vary because he will have access to crane and mantis for crossup or in front. If you catch a sweep with focus dash in you should be able to throw him away and reset the tiger obstacle course.

I think a Sagat who plays reactive and pays attention to the jump arc before anti airing has a more even matchup than a Sagat who tries to play footsies with me.

yo wats good ma sagat brothers,
was just wondering if anyones found anything new for the ibuki match up?
def one of my worst match ups.

There is nothing sagat has that makes this matchup “easier” in all honesty. Your neutral, anti-air, and knowledge of the matchup are really all thats going to help you. Do not focus much in this match, this is the biggest mistake I see people do. She has quite a few target combos and armor breaking specials.
Couple notes though, you can blow up quite a few of the kunai oki setups by learning to delay your wakeup uppercut by a few frame. This will even bypass a lot of the meaty kunai setups. Much harder to do consistently but it does work.
Recognize where there are gaps in her pressure, her biggest advantage frame trapping you is abusing the +4 (on block) 3 frame jab. Most ibuki’s will go for tick throws or slight step back cl.st.forward frame traps. They’ll usually go from cl.st.forward on block into spin kick pressure since it builds meter, does chip, and does a lot of pushback on sagat. You can focus and punish the first spin kick if you focus the cl.st.forward. You can also reversal on reaction when you see the start up of spin kick from the forward (she’ll do a slight spin backwards, train yourself to recognize it) If they go for the 3rd spin kick, there is also a gap but it is hard to time a punish for (reversal or focus) and there is a risk with uppercuts whiffing. Heavily punish ibuki for trying to go from medium range slides under fireballs. Also, if you can’t react uppercut her dolphin kick, your only saving grace is to do a delayed cl.st.strong. It will anti-air the dolphin kick because it has a slight startup once it reaches you. Lastly, if your playing against a gimmicky Ibuki, always be prepared for command dashes in the middle of her pressure. A favored tactic they like to do is get a counterhit jab or st.strong from frame trap pressure and command dash to the other side of you for more damage. You HAVE to be able to build your confidence to throw unpredictable fireballs. St.forward and st.short are your best normals in this matchup but even then its hard and you can be easily whiff/punished with her sweep. She is also one of the characters that with proper tiger knee spacing will sometimes get hit by the first knee and the second hit will whiff, allowing her a free punish.

Overall, I switch characters in this matchup. It is really difficult to get consistent with. If your godlike, I’ve seen Ryan Hart just straight up counter hit slides and and neckbreakers on reaction with sagat cr.forward.

wicked cheers for the info man…switching characters would be a option for me to but cbf learning sumone new just for this match up lol my theory is adapt or die.i’ve watch the bonchan topanga league and its really helped, but then again bonchan’s gdlike an know’s the match up to a tee.

Yeah sometimes I feel that Ibuki is sagats absolute worst match up. She gets around everything so easily =[. Counterpicking is why I also learned yun, cammy and fei hahaha. They make it easier then struggling through his bad match ups.

yo anyone have vids of sagat playing good against dahlsim? I got bodied 10 games in a row yesterday by a dahlsim with all the tricks. I struggle at being patient and full screen (eat the long heavy punch or walk forward yoga sniper) and the slow fireball/teleport combo is retarded.

also search for bonchan vs yhc mochi

Yoga fire , teleport is quite gimmicky , just late dp or neutral jump mk. You have to use a lot of karas vs sim both knee and tu.

Don’t be afraid to take a gamble against sim, he has low damage, you have high health and once you are on him its really tough for him to get out.

i find the juri match up much more difficult.
especially with the tiger shot nerf, the recovery makes you much more vulnerable to juri’s dive kick.

That match was always fucked, that an dudley just got worse if it was even possible.

The Rose match is interesting now that’s for sure, on one hand you can throw her out of Soul Spiral which is very good for us, on the other hand the same move now has better invincibility and her close mk seems to have got even better at trapping. Yet another zoning style match where gat is at a disadvantage.

We are playing the worst best zoner in the history of fighting games.

Also fuck the U1 distance nerf, I’m swaying more to Ultra 2 every game I play, it’s fucking heart breaking seeing someone drop out that didn’t before.

New tech discovered by ballotelli-senpai,

Kara unblockable tiger knee,

How in all of the fucks are you supposed to beat Viper playing as Sagat? This feels literally impossible. She has block strings up close, Seismo into burn kick from full screen. You can’t do shit on wakeup because you have zero way of knowing which side she’s on. You can’t anti-air her because her jump arc is weird. She also has invincible reversals on her wake up. And you can’t focus because Thunder Knuckle beats it.

What. The. Fuck.

Movement is important in the Viper match. You can’t be stationary. Dash forwards , backwards, neutral jump, bait shots. Always be ready to AA.

You can reaction TU burn kicks if you are full screen, jump back or jump forward fierce is also good. Do not push buttons up close, just block. EX uppercut into U1 is a great way of landing big damage on Viper since she comes in from the air. Stay close to her and use shots sporadically. Low step kick counters seismo, kara knee also.

Tough match but not impossible. Again movement is priority, you stay still you are a walking target.
