Tiers for obscure games

My girlfriend wishes to see tiers for Criticom and Cardinal Syn.

That game was awesome! Well… The demo anyway. It only had Nephra and Redemptor, and only one good level. I liked it a lot. When I later in life tried the full version on PSX emu, I found most of the other characters/levels to be ugly and boring. I was quite disappointed, so I prefer the demo lol
Super epic menu music btw. In fact, the menu looks nice too, with the shields and swords and all. One of the best menus ever.

hyper Dimension I feel was the best DBZ fighter.

yeah, there is no way ZOE2 vs mode would be considered a Shitty fighting game :looney: if it can be considered one

DBZ Hyper Dimension

Hyper Dimension is really good as I said. The game has reversals and plays kinda similar to ST with similar mechanics but a few DBZ twists. Throws are instant, coming out at zero frames and do quite a bit of damage just like ST and also have alot of range also just like ST. You can short hop similar to the KoF series. This way you can hop over certain attacks and stage an offense. A short hop attack is just like a jumping attack and it must be blocked high. You can run although it’s much slower then in KoF and you sort of fly over the ground. There are no beam struggles and fighting in the air is very different from fighting on the ground. When two normals collide both combatants enter a Rush Battle and exchange a flurry of attacks. The person who presses buttons faster will win the struggle and launch a beam blast at their opponent.

There is also a guard cancel system where if you block an attack you can immediately counter attack by quickly doing a special move. When done correctly the screen goes dark for a bit and freezes and then the special move comes out. So you can attempt to interrupt a block string with a guard cancelled normal but if your opponent is still throwing out normals you’ll probably just get stuffed. So you need to use this mechanic intelligently. Everyone also has a background attack where they will jump into the background and then go right after their opponent with an attack. Good for getting out of some tight spots occasionally and they seem to have some invincibility during start-up.

Well here’s the list.

God Tier - Goku, Vegetto
Top Tier- Freeza
High tier- Kid Buu, Piccolo
Mid Tier - Vegeta, Gohan,
Low Tier - Cell, Fat Buu
Bottom Tier - Gotenks

Goku - His kick normals are all good. He has really good specials as well. He has Fei Long’s chicken wing done right. Covers huge space, fairly safe on block and Goku can combo directly after it just as if he had landed a jump in attack. It’s not an overhead though. His quadruple kicks do good damage and are also fairly safe on block. He has a teleport which is good for getting him out of tight spots. He has a reversal DP, although in his case he uses his knee so it’s aptly named Dragon Knee. It’s better on the ground since it doesn’t knockdown in the air. His Double Punch special is safe on block and leads directly to juggling and is a major component to his infinite. It’s also a great move to guard cancel since when blocking because you are usually holding down back and the motion for the Double Punch is QCF. Goku’s infinite is what pushed him to the ranks of God Tier. It’s very easy to do and very easy to get off. The basic infinite is jump in attack, Double Punch, Double Punch, jumping attack. The opponent will be stunned after this and you an just rinse and repeat till victory. Since you can short hop in this game it really increases your mix-up options and makes it alot easier to get in damage. This is what makes that redizzy infinite so deadly and applicable in matches. Goku also has the best Desperation meteo in the game. It’s unblockable and he teleports right to his opponent before he attacks them. You can still jump away from him though or grab him before he hits you although the timing is tricky.

Vegetto - Great normals with good range and speed. Crouching punch is disjointed with great range. Has Dictators slide kick. Can be comboed into and puts the enemy into a juggle state. His dash elbow special is a good combo ender and pretty safe. Ultimate Rush is another good combo ender and it’s also fairly safe as well. Vegetto is the only character in the game with an overhead attack increasing his mix-up potential. He can combo into his Desperation Meteo and he has an infinite as well although his is a little harder to do and is more spacing dependent. To do his you must jump in/short hop with kick/punch and land right next to the opponent and then do two punches followed by crouching punch cancelled into slide kick. From there you juggle with two hits and finish with a jumping attack. This will dizzy the opponent and you can repeat the combo. Vegetto also has a really good AA move with his upward kicks which also makes a great guard cancel since the move is db to uf kick. You don’t need to charge so he can do it at anytime. He lacks his own reversal though which sucks. Still, he is all around an amazing character with better normals then Goku while Goku is a little more versatile with his special moves.

Note - I actually found Vegetto’s infinite while messing with him as I was writing this. He was originally going to be top tier on my list but the infinite bumped him up.

Freeza - EXTREMELY versatile, but this is almost always the case in a DBZ game that has Freeza. He has awesome normals. Standing kick has alot of range. Crouching kick is a slide kick that knocks down on hit and is super safe because Freeza stops as soon as he hits the opponent or it’s blocked and he actually recoils a bit. Easily one of the safest lows in the game. He has a command throw with huge range although it does the same amount of damage as a normal throw. He has the Seeker energy disk that homes in. Not good for wake-up like in the Butouden series but still good for combos and let’s him control mid range. His reversal is a Palm blast. It doesn’t knockdown on hit but the range is massive. About half the screen and it cancels out other ki attacks aside from super blasts. He has a dive kick which is awesome for getting in. It’s two hits and leaves Freeza at slight advantage on block. His Death Ball in the air gives him some runaway capabilities. It’s slow to come out but the energy of the attack lingers on the ground for a bit which lets him control space better. His only weaknesses are that his combos aren’t as amazing as some of the other top tiers and that his AA Blast doesn’t come out that quick.

Kid Buu - A spacing monster. His pokes are ridiculous. Namely forward punch and his head whip special. They both have crazy range. Crouching punch hit confirms by itself since it’s two hits and cancels into itself as well as other normals. His crouching kick has good range. His Earth kick is really good for catching opponents off guard. Different buttons send the kick different lengths and all the kicks hit low. The kicks can juggle into themselves going in order from closest to farthest. He can combo into his Desperation Meteo and he has alot of comboability in general. He has good runaway since he can stay in the air as long as he wants with his glide and then come down with an attack whenever. He also has two air projectiles. One version fires three shots straight ahead and the other sends them at an angle. The straight shots are good for runaway/turtling while the angled shots are good for approaching when he jumps or short hops. He has a fundamental weakness though. All of his jumping attacks can be blocked low. So his mix-up potential is the worst in the game. But his keepaway is still very strong and he can still mix up between throw or attack when he rushes.

Piccolo - Very good at midrange. Standing kick and crouching kick have great range. His mystic arm stretches out his arms about half screen. He has a high and low version and both are fairly safe. He can do additional damage if they hit by pulling them in and throwing them. This works in juggles too. The command for this can be entered and if the attack is blocked nothing happens so Piccolo can attempt to get the extra damage at no risk. He has the seeker ki ball which also really helps him control space at mid range. He has the instant dive kick just like in Butouden but if it’s blocked he bounces back. Still since it’s so fast it can catch opponents off guard when he jumps at them or short hops. He can combo into his Desperation Meteo. His main weakness is that he lacks good AA’s. His AA Blast is a little slow in start up and his Mental Shock doesn’t have great range and it’s also somewhat slow to come out.

Vegeta - The best standing kick in the game. He rushes forward when he does it so it covers alot of distance and it’s still very safe. Crouching kick hit confirms by itself because it’s two hits and crouching punch has good range although it can’t cancel into specials. His Slide combo is pretty good. A combo that ends with the slide kick special and then cancelled into his rising knee special can do over 125 points of damage. So Vegeta can do huge damage off of a hit confirm. He would be a much better character if so many of his specials weren’t useless or awkward. It’s really his good normals and huge damage potential that keeps him afloat. He also has the rapid ki attack which is good for pressure and a good AA/combo finisher with his Rising Knee. His other specials aren’t worth mentioning really. They are just bad.

Gohan - Sort of the opposite of Vegeta. His normals are pretty average but his specials are good. He is a charge character so he can take full advantage of the guard cancel system. Rush punches and Rush kicks are good combo enders and Rising kick is a good AA. His short hop is probably the worst in the game though since he has to be so close to get use out of it. You can do the old ST trick of hitting u/b to get your AA special while keeping your back charge or hitting d/f for a rush special while keeping your down charge. He has the rapid fire ki attack which is good for putting on pressure while still getting your charge.

Cell - Pretty bad overall with some good stuff mixed in here and there. Terrible normals. Most have no range aside from standing kick which is good. He has a command grab that works anywhere on screen, but only if the opponent isn’t in the middle of an action and they need to be on the ground. His upward flames make a good AA and combo finisher and his Cell jr attack is good for controlling space on the ground. His rush punches are kinda bad. They can usually be blocked half way through since the hitboxes and hit pushback is awkward. He has two Desperation Meteo’s but they suck. They can’t be comboed into and they are unsafe. It’s really just his horrid normals that kill him and maybe one or two bad specials.

Fat Buu - Most of his specials are crap with horrid recovery and they leave him open on block. And he lacks an AA blast which hurts his AA game. His far standing punch and crouching punch are disjointed though which is really good. And some of his ground specials are great in combos. Still he is far too unsafe. He CAN combo into his Desperation Meteo though which is nice.

Gotenks - Bad normals. Fast, but no range really. Pretty much all of his specials are unsafe aside from his air ki blast which is pretty good and safe since he goes back when he launches it. He has some pretty cool combos though, but other then that there is nothing redeeming about him.

Hmmm. I think I’ll do Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 2. After tiering a great game like Hyper Dimension I think I want something truly terrible to even me out.

Part 3 seemed solid and there are even some (Japanese?) arcade vids on Youtube with people mostly using Alice and Shenlong.

Primal Fury seemed really scrub-friendly. You could mash Block to dodge, throws were dumbed-down, and the Hyper Beast system was broke when you’re near-death. You could Hyper Beast (Z Button) and then do a quick Beast Drive (Super) to get a good chunk of life back, and then you’re still in super-fucking-strong mode with an added character perk. Oh, and ringouts.

You’re right, 4 was ass. They took out Air Chasing, ā€œSuper Duckingā€ (tap Down twice), and some characters had that stupid ā€œEvade Stanceā€ instead of heavy block (which also took out practical Dodging). And they barely added shit for returning characters. Very disappointing.

All I know are two major things about Yugo:
-in PF and 4, Yugo has a very fast combo and it’s also a great punisher. It’s simply P,K,K into qcf+K, (Flicker) P,P,P etc. Natural combo, good speed, good damage.
-in 3 and PF, Yugo has a tech-trap infinite: go into Beast Mode, hit the opponent with D/B+P,P, opponent bounces, then juggle with P,P,P,K while they try to tech. The final hit should be guaranteed, and it will send them into an untechable spin, and since they tried to tech during the combo, the damage is greater, and it also knocks them up into the air a bit higher. While they’re still spinning in the air from the last kick, hit them with a well timed u+P, which will bounce them once again (you can do u+P even after recovering from the P,P,P,K combo because any move with an ā€œUpā€ notation is considered an ā€œAir Chaseā€ move; Air Chasing can only be done when in Beast Mode and when the opponent is in the air). Lastly, after the bounce from the u+P, do P,P,P,K again, repeat. Even if the opponent doesn’t tech, you can still get about 2 or 3 reps before they’re too low to the ground to keep comboing, and it will also force you to change the timing of your u+P’s since they’ll drop to the floor a lot sooner.

So again: (Beast Mode) D/B+P,P…P,P,P,K…u+P…P,P,P,K…u+P…(repeat)

Try it out to see if it’s solid. The time when your opponent tries to tech during the P,P,P,K might affect the combo.

I’ve also got some Shenlong, Gado, and Bakuryu stuff lying around in an old note pad from PF. And I remember Stun being a pain in the ass because you can’t escape his strong-ass three-part Multithrow, and both of his Beast Drives were unblockable, but I dunno much more than that.

Heh, this is quite upsetting news as a Gotenks main. His multi ki blast isn’t good as the others I’m guessing, let alone the shine shine 11 ki blast! But I liked the way his combos and ghosts worked, and to me, he’s the best thing out of the Buu saga.

Gotenks has a redizzy infinite too iirc, and I think Gohan is ridics in that game, easy #3 after the two you listed

Imo Fat buu is the worst character but he does have an infinite in the air. There’s a lot of weird mechanics, like Piccolo can do a sort of wave dash w/ his short hop dive kick.

Pretty much in all the 2d DBZ games, dumb shit happens when you go in the air. Trunks had a slide infinite in Super Butouden because you can’t block low in the air

I dunno about that, the game had a lot of shit to it if you knew about it, like button locks & grab cancels, etc.

What’s Gotenks re-dizzy?
And NH3 is pretty much a better NH2 in every way I do believe…

Tell me some cool shit in Ultimate Ninja 2.

I ignored aerial combat in Hyper Dimension because honestly…it sucks. And it’s like a completely different game.

Gohan IMO doesn’t have any crazy shit or awesome normals. He just has really good specials. I can’t see him as better then Freeza. I could see him as tied with Piccolo and Kid Buu though because it’s so easy for him to abuse the guard cancel system and rush punches/kicks are waaaaaaaaaay too safe and do good chip.

I messed with Gotenks quite a bit and I thought I discovered a redizzy inifinte with him but I couldn’t get it to work consistently so I just said fuck it. He might have one involving his shine shine missile. I’ll mess with him some more.

Even if he had one though I couldn’t see him as higher then mid tier because his specials and normals are so lackluster.

A powerful tool means nothing without the solid foundation to back it up.

YES. This is one of my favourites.

Top:
Yeung, Thorsten, Lau, Chairman Jackie
Mid:
Kim Maree, Drunk Jackie
Low:
Shitty Jackie
Sam
LOL:
M-Lion

Yeung: Has the best high-low mixup game, she just does pole attack for free all day and is safe. Her other ground normals complete her keep away game, making it near impossible to get in. It’s not a matter of even hitting the opponent as much as just chipping them to death with the overhead… Easily #1 in the game, but the top tier can compete with her.

Thorsten: Low B is fucking stupid as shit, it is a great poke and combo tool. Out of control priority. He has the best OTG game, and has an incredibly damaging bnb. His super is a good punish, and you can combo a flip kick after it as well for extra damage. His overhead is also REALLY good, second only to the pole.

Lau: My Main! Lau’s low D is incredible for spacing and combos. The super gives him juggle options and his OTG game is also very strong. I should also mention his low a probably is one of the best in the game.

Chairman Jackie: Super is completely safe and does great chip, Dragon Kick loop is fucking dope, and leads to free OTG. DK Loop -> OTG -> Super is like at least 65%, even if super is BLOCKED. Good Low D to boot.

Kim-Maree: I originally thought she was low-tier until BBH figured out her good attacks / learned how to zone with her. She does at LEAST 50% EACH TIME with a combo. Her ground flips are waaay too good. Shit is ridiculous. Her low D isn’t comboable, but has stupidly good damage. If Kim-Maree had more tools to get in I’d say she would easily be in the running for #1 You could argue she is top tier, but the Yeung matchup is just too crappy for Kim. As a side note: If you can counter mash REALLY REALLY well, her throw and flips aren’t as good but you’ll get tired quick.

Drunk Jackie: Ass attack and Nerd Pirate are great, being safe at most ranges. Unfortunately his other attacks leave a bit to be desired. His command grabs are great, but don’t lead to a good OTG. Super will put you in the corner on whiff

Shitty Jackie: He’s pretty shitty. Alright normals, but none of his specials are any good. The lack of good OTG game leaves him near the bottom of the barrel…

Sam: Oh boyy… The hundred hands might seem good at first, but are easily punishable once someone gets the timing down. The aerial kick is alright, but so predictable and doesn’t do much chip at all  No thanks.

Mysterious Lion: His standing C is actually REALLY good, but the rest of his attacks are just abysmal. the psycho crusher puts him close to the corner, which is NOT where you want to be with M-Lion. The biggest problem is that he lacks the speed of the other characters. He also doesn’t have a combo that does decent damage… In super mode he does good damage, but that is timed and people can even beat you out of it  If you like to lose, M-Lion is a great choice.

^^Sweet stuff. I was wanting to check this out for a game night for shits and giggles. But I think we might have some serious fun here.

I’m sooooooooooooooo mad.

I messed with Gotenks a bit more and…I found his infinite. It was easy to find and it’s pretty simple too. It’s jump in/short hop punch, punch, punch, cancel into shine shine missile. The reason I’m mad is because…well Gotenks sucks ass. As a character he isn’t good. His normals are meh. Standing punch and kick have a bit of range on them, but nothing to write home about. Most of his specials are super unsafe. But with this infinite Gotenks makes the leap from shit character to viable character.

I’m thinking he would be mid tier at worst since it’s soooooooooooo easy to get in hits thanks to short hopping. Then again he doesn’t have any threatening low attacks. His sweep knocks down and has little range so if he jumps at you then you know to block high. So that’s pretty much why I wouldn’t put him on the same level as Freeza or better.

Still, there should be a rule that sucky characters aren’t allowed to have infinites. It just doesn’t make any fucking sense. If you suck then you suck. Don’t suck and have the best type of combo in a fighting game.

But honestly, I think if Hyper Dimension was played alot, that infinites should be banned. They aren’t hard to do and it’s not hard to get a hit in thanks to short hopping. It’s not like vs games where you have super high mobility and jockeying for space is difficult. Getting a hit in Hyper Dimension isn’t hard at all really and I think the game is much deeper/better without dying off a simple mix-up game.

So with his infinite Gotenks goes up.

So the new list is.

God Tier - Goku, Vegetto
Top Tier - Freeza
High Tier - Piccolo, Kid Buu, Gohan
Mid tier - Vegeta, Gotenks
Low Tier - Cell
Bottom Tier - Fat Buu

I moved Fat Buu down one spot and Gohan up one. Gohan just has really good specials and Fat Buu is trash even compared to Cell and Cell is terrible.

Gotenks is mid tier due to potential. If he gets you with an aerial and he is close then you are dead. But if he doesn’t get that hit he is kinda screwed.

Note - I been messing with it more and more and it seems to only work in the corner or close to the corner. Also Gotenks’ short hop goes far but if he is too close he will overshoot his enemy so he needs a very specific spacing and at the range he needs to be he isn’t threatening and he doesn’t have any other good options aside from rapid ki blasts and shine shine missile. He can short hop and mix-up with his air blast which can throw an opponent off but it’s not super threatening.

In my mind this solidifies him as mid tier.

"el fuerte!@$!!$!@#$!!!"
On a more serious note, banning infinites is unfeasible. The best you’re going to be able to do is ban characters.

Maxter is top; infinite off a jab + legit sway mixups = soo good.

Yeah, but honestly they are just too easy to hit with. Really though I’m just biased. I got no problem with Goku and Vegetto having them because they have other tools. They don’t need to fish for the infinite to be good.

Gotenks pretty much has to since he doesn’t really have any other good tools.

hell no

YEah, we might upload more vids if there is interest… Not much new has been discovered since we uploaded last set so thee’s really no good reason so far.

I dunno I could see him in upper mid but even with an inf on jab, many suits can zone him out too well or stay otg from what I’ve seen and he may not get a suitable jab. I have to look into it more but there are a few solid ways to avoid it altogether for some. Too match-specific I think but I’m willing to sway my thoughts if I see just how good it actually is. Like, I’d put him in high tier if I didn’t think high tier suits could handle him too well, but they do.

:shake: That’s a shame because those videos are hilarious, the game is mad cheezy, and the commentary you guys give is golden. ā€œTHAT’S NOT OKAY!!!ā€ may be my favorite line.

I dunno, are do you guys have a video thread for it? It would definitely help get more views and interest.
