Tier list discussion

OK so everyone loves(hates) discussing tier lists, and everyone wants to bitch and moan about characters so I’ve started this thread for that particular discussion seeing as the latest tier list was made in 2007(http://www.eventhubs.com/guides/2007/dec/18/tiers-character-rankings-street-fighter-3-third-strike/).

Does anyone else feel that Makoto tied with Chun/Yun as the best characters in the game?It seems as if though you only really have two or three chances against a Makoto who pulls off their stun combos perfectly.

Also does anyone feel as though Necro has moved up considerably in the past year or so. I see alot of those new matches in the vids thread of ranbats and there are a lot of new Necros about beasting with him. Like Makoto he is a crazy stun character with the corner juggles being the corner stone of his game. With his safe aerial dart kick and command grab he can get his opponent to the corner quickly and that’s where his reign of terror begins. Of course he is no way near top tier but I think he has at least moved into the low-mid area, whereas before he was only above Sean,12 and Q.

I would say Makoto is just beneath Yun in the tiers, and I agree that Necro has moved up. His mix-up potential and stun juggles are just insane.

The new Arcadia tier list for reference

S+ - Chun-Li
S - Yun
A+ - Ken, Dudley
A - Makoto, Yang
A- - Urien, Akuma, Ryu, Oro
B+ - Hugo
B - Elena, Ibuki, Alex
C - Necro, Twelve, Remy, Q
D - Sean

I would say that Makoto is above Yun but still below Chun. Canceling normals into fake hayates is ridiculous combined with her fast dash and 100% stun. Boss is one of the only players in the “god” GVS tier along with Nuki and Yakkun, but I’m mainly referring here to Mimora’s ridiculous cancel every single thing into canceled hayate

As a whole, tiers became ‘less distanced’. They ‘closed the gap’ in that bottom tiers are closer to top tiers. Arcadia moved Hugo up correctly - it’s difficult playing a patient Hugo in that you have to be even more patient in your aggression. It’s no longer a rush down match and guessing game. There’s a reason people of Nuki and Yakkun’s caliber teamed up with Akahori. Q is similar and it’s hard to crack a wall like Kuroda - he reacts to everything (except Makoto, as evidenced by his desperate jump lp guesses)

Necro, Alex and Remy have been hard repping recently and I don’t think they’re as low tier as they look. All three have ex’s that put immense pressure on you and each char has an extensive bag of tricks, whereas top tiers have almost used up all theirs. In fact, even Sean is not as garbage as he looks. he’s basically a shoto with no specials (his ex shoryu seems to be okay though) and worse pokes (the sweep… and i think his c.mk is a bit slower?) and ofc the shitty superjump. With that said, he does have a fast dash and good supers so if you play a very safe shoto game you could do alright. Still, Twelve/Sean bottom tier. If only twelve’s poking game paid off after 20 pokes vs 1 random shoryu

I’m also worried about Urien. Cornertraps have been obsolete for a while now, but it seems people are catching on to the mid screen unblockable by parrying and it’s no longer 100% safe to do (in Japan at least). RX uses launcher cancelled into lp.orb aegis sweep which makes me wonder if Urien will decline, and if so whether it’s just the characters random/explosive nature or the lack of people playing him. All that said, RX is still a king and I have no doubt that he’ll continue to rape.

All IMO ofc. Just some observations I’ve made following all the big tournies (SBO/babanpaku/hkn/kow) and shit like Coopcup and GVS which has shown that 3S is really at a new high atm.

Yeah, Alex is not bad at all, but look at the list of names that go in front of Alex. The list makes perfect sense “tier” wise.

S+ - Chun-Li
S - Yun
A+ - Ken, Dudley
A - Makoto, Yang

I would switch Yang/Dudley, and Makato/Ken.

My updates are included and bolded.

Agree with everything except:

Sean below Twelve
Dudley above Makoto
Urien above Akuma

Unless the listings for each tier aren’t meant to put them on a specific order against eachother, then you can ignore my last two points. Still, I’ll never understand Sean being below Twelve - Sean has cr.lk,lp,lk confirm into super for god’s sake, and shoto cancellable cr.mk. Not to mention deals decent stun and damage. Twelve has none of the staple “top tier” characteristics, can’t deal decent damage, has no easy confirms and pretty much the worst punish options of the game…Even his SA1 bnb (cr.lk xx whips xx SA1) is annoying to pull off for the crappy damage it deals. What makes Twelve better than Sean? Mobility?

Pretty much. It’s kind of hard to quantify when held up against stuff like, ability to deal damage, but 12’s mobility is actually pretty huge. He plays very unconventional when held up to the rest of the 3s cast.

S++ - Chun-Ri
S - Yun
A+ - Yang, Makoto
A - Ken, Dudley
A- - Urien, Ryu, Oro
B+ - Hugo
B - Elena, Ibuki, Alex
C - Necro, Twelve, Remy, Q
D - Sean
F- Kevin’s Gouki (after the traumatic raping… truly tragic by Justin) :tup:

Fixed it for you :lovin:

The tier is list about right. I guess there is no love for Ibuki nowadays. :(. Actually never has been much love.

It’s probably just her design, gameplay and annoyance factor.

The list is really interesting, especially Hugo taking such a huge leap up (but if Hugo does, I don’t see why Q wouldn’t either), but there are some I definitely take issue with.

I think Urien and Gouki have an edge over Ryu and Oro if only because I think they both perform better against Chun (although Vanao is a bit of a Chun killer).

I also can’t understand rating Makoto below Dudley and Ken.

Twelve CAN do decent damage. Getting hit by s.mk xx super (midscreen) or cr.lk super in the corner hurts A LOT, he just doesn’t get to land it as often. s.mk sjc xflat is also a bomb ass combo, and the only reason I don’t use xflat over xndl more is because I personally whore EX meter with him a lot. Although it can be stuffed by a lot of shit, it can also punish a decent amount of things on reaction, however there are barely any Twelve players, let alone ones that would actually use xflat over xndl, so people don’t really get to see what it can do.

Also, I like Twelve over Sean in the tier list cause even if Twelve doesn’t have much, he is annoying as fuck to fight against and people hardly have an idea of what someone besides the cpu plays like with him. Sean has some interesting things here and there but at least he’s related to the shoto group.

Now the real question is wtf is Necro doing that low?

Maybe they also do better against Chun.

Fixed it for myself.

Should’ve evaded Chong Li’s powder trick :shake:

Twelve is annoying. If used properly that is!

This tier list is completely bogus. Here’s the real deal…

MSF++++: Arex
MSF+++: Alex
Not MSF: people who aren’t Arex

Arex is secret top tier.

damn those tier lists are so wrong. this is the REAL tier list!

MSF: Makoto
S++: Chun
S: Yun
A: Dudley
A-: Ken, Akuma
B+: Urien, Yang, Ryu, Oro, Ibuki
B: Q, Necro
B- Elena, Alex
C - Twelve, Remy, Hugo
D - Sean

damn my list is so flawless. =D

edit: hugo moved to C rank.

why’ve you put makoto so high and dudley above ken and akuma?

While I wouldn’t put Makoto above Chun, I could certainly see her likened to Yun. I already consider her better than Ken/Dudley, so eh. You don’t even need to go the karakusa + SA2 stun combo route for her to be beast, cr.lk xx hayate link into SA1 is plenty scary on its own.
