I thought discussion on Roll was over… but with the previous post, I have an excuse! Plus I main Roll =)
Roll by no means is a bad character. However, using her requires a lot of quick thinking and being able to adjust your playstyle on the fly. The way I look at it, she’s more of using whatever you can throw at your opponent to counter their momentum. She does have defensive and offensive options, but they seem more oriented towards giving opponents a hard time rather then damage output.
Given her tools (bucket, puddle, sweep, j.c, Power-Up tricks, Heal, size, OTG, overhead, even her throws), everything is great to annoy and frustrate your opponents playstyle. Other players will have to adjust their combos and playstyles specifically for her. The more you frustrate/agitate/fluster your opponent, the more likely they’ll make a mistake to capitalize on via a combo or Super.
Oddly, I’ve found that her 6b overhead works incredibly well facing people offline. For some reason people get thrown off when I throw it out there and from that I continue with a swing, barqoue combo, or Super.
What makes it hard for her is that characters with range (i.e., tekkaman, blade, zero) or speed (i.e., Ken, Zero), or just giants can beat out most of her approaches. She also suffers from having limited anti-air options, Add that to her low health, and you’ve got a character who can die with 1-2 strong combos or a lvl 3 Super.
Even given that though, she’s a fun (though a bit challenging), solid character to use.
I recommend watching some of Brian’s matches http://www.youtube.com/user/briankasugano#p/u/13/THmijSmlIZA on his youtube for Roll play.
