Thursday Night Fights @ Versis (Portland Area, All Fighters, Every Thursday)

Unfortunately, Versis is now closed… Thanks for the Fight Night Memories… Let’s look forward to building more NW Fighting and community events!

**ABOUT THURSDAY NIGHT FIGHTS @ VERSIS (AKA “FIGHT NIGHTS”)

When: Every Thursday, 6pm-10pm

Where: Versis Videogame Center - 1356 NW Civic Dr. Gresham, OR 97030

Cost: $10 pays for the entire night of playing all available console or PC fighting games. Again, the $10 is a one-time fee for the day, it is not the hourly rate. If the event goes past 10pm (it often does, sometimes even to 5am), you won’t be charged for any further gametime. On occasion, coupons may become available for Fight Night, so be on the lookout for those and feel free to ask me via private message.

SPECIAL OFFER: Bring a guest who has never been to a Fight Night before in at full price and get your admission to Fight Night free.**

Fight Night sessions are played on our large HD setups with USB access provided for arcade sticks and corded controllers. Two arcade sticks on each system (360 and PS3) are provided, but bringing your own stick is always recommended and many of our members are happy to let others play on them (assuming good consideration and care).

During the sessions that go very late, we often prepare additional setups tailored to the group’s needs and especially if our members provide it (import Wii’s, CRT monitors, near-lagless monitors, etc…). It’s a community effort.

All console fighting games are covered under the $10 fee. We have 360s, PS3s, Wii consoles, and PCs. Our fighting game library includes King of Fighters XII, BlazBlue, Street Fighter IV, Tekken 5 DR, SSF2T:HD Remix, Soul Calibur IV, Virtua Fighter 5, Dead or Alive 4 and even some older fighting games.

A PC will also be made available for the group in case you need to look up something or watch youtube videos or whatever.

There is also a 25 cent multicade arcade machine loaded up with lots of fighting games. The library includes most Capcom and SNK fighting games that were not on a Naomi or CPS3 board.

Players are welcome to bring any appropriate equipment they feel necessary such as additional CRTs, monitors, systems, games, hard drives, controllers, etc… We really do want to support all fighting games possible.

The Fight Nights are a blast and the most active games of late have included Street Fighter IV, Virtua Fighter 5, KOF XII, BlazBlue, HD Remix, and Super Turbo: Grandmaster Challenge on the multicade. When Tekken 6 comes out, we’d love to see that grow into a staple too.

We’re always looking to provide a place for the community to develop, expand, and together experience games as best as we can provide.

I decided to move the Versis Fight Nights discussion to this new thread because the old thread’s title implied that we were only doing Street Fighter IV at the sessions and a lot of non-SF4 players had missed out on what Fight Night was about.

I also want to thank everyone who has ever come out to the Fight Nights. They’ve been a wonderful event for me to run and it often reminds me of how much I loved playing in the arcade fighting game scene growing up in the 90s.

You guys have been and continue to be awesome friends and colleagues

I can’t remember everything at this week’s Fight Night (8/27/09), but here’s what I can remember…

Thanks to the following players for coming out:

 • SlayU2
 • Rayblade X
 • Bumperfront
 • Derek
 • R_Panda
 • Pasqual
 • Kwyjibo123
 • Scotti
 • Lord BBH
 • Mackinzie
 • Fat Bear
 • Slash5150
 • Two other dudes playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2

I also ran into two guys from Mexico in my store who (not surprisingly) love KOF 2002. They might show up next week  They played the crap out of KOF and Snow Bros. 2 on the machine.

Back to the 8/27 Fight Night…

This was a weird night.

On top of the SF4 sessions that were going pretty well, I was (not surprisingly as of late) playing a lot of KOF XII with Pasqual, Panda, BBH, Mackinzie, Kwyjibo123, and Slash. Thank you guys, I had a lot of fun!

The highlight of the night are the things that made this night so weird… It truly was a flashback to old at home sessions, especially ones with Rayblade. I say it’s really weird, but I really mean it in a good (but kinda scary) way…

Here goes…

R_Panda busts out Battle Fantasia and pretty much everyone gets in on it with tons of “oohs, aahs, and WTFs.”

 • Slash5150 streaks early despite not having played the game. I think ever.

 • Fat Bear (who won the 3S tourney at Northwest Majors) probably had the most dominant streak and ended up smiling really bright afterwards with how crazy the game is. The guy’s been worn out with work and all… but I haven’t seen him this bright in awhile. Though I’m guessing he was shining bright after he won 3s at NWM :stuck_out_tongue:

 • Even Lord BBH (won KOF XII at NWM, 2nd on HDR) partakes and more madness ensues. No idea what Matt thnks about the game, but everyone seemed to like it.

And another thing weird happens… Like some of the old private at home fighting sessions at the old Art House and other places… Rayblade busts out some of the most bizarre music videos I’ve ever seen from the 80s and 90s… and BBH, while playing KOF XII with me, starts singing along out loud from across the store… I’ve been scarred for life…

Anyhow, with RaybladeX going to the World Cyber Games tournament in New York for Virtua Fighter 5, I’ll definitely be setting up practice sessions on the side the next few weeks at the Fight Nights. We’ll probably break down replays and iron out a lot of kinks. It’ll be a good opportunity for those wanting to learn more VF5 to have things broken down for them in group collaboration.

Awesome times guys!!!

i’m rusty but i probably wouldn’t mind getting in some VF5 practice.

i’ll try to bring a 3s set up this week and if you guys bring arcana hearts prepair to get arped. bye either me or tajiri. real talk. i’ll throw tops and sisters at you like you wouldn’t believe.

battle fantasia was fun but lets all pretend we never played aight?

good luck to ray at WCG, nick you aren’t going… work i assume?

Just to give everyone a heads up:

There will be a birthday party at Versis at 5:30pm on Thursday. It’s scheduled to end at 7:30pm which means to expect it to be around 8:00pm.

Though I plan to go to PAX super early as hell Friday morning, I promise you guys Fight Night will go to at least midnight.

Mackinzie is the guy I trust to close things up, so if he wants to keep it going super late, that is an option.

i’ll do it if there are more than 5 people like the policy says :stuck_out_tongue: or if i’m there and too lazy to drive home .

I couldn’t help myself!!! When Ray busts out my favorite Modern Talking song (), I just HAVE to sing along.

Regarding Battle Fantasia - I played a little bit of it and pretty much all I knew was that Cedric was broken. It’s kinda funny but doesn’t exactly seem to be a game with long-term interest.

LOL, all good BBH. But some of those music videos later on were creepy as heck lol.

BTW, I had always wondered why your YouTube account was banned… now I know  Sucks that happened though, you think they’d at least give you a warning or something. I mean, if they’re willing to play it that way… who knows what a company that knows everything about you (Google) might set out to do later on… and my best friend works there (and they’ve got amazing campuses).

Battle Fantasia… I just can’t really get into that game, but maybe you can blame the demo for that. I just never had interest in it after playing the demo. But it’s fun to see everyone get into it, maybe because the lack of long-term interest makes it tons of short-term fun.

It also doesn’t help that when I read an interview with the creator, somewhere in there someone mentions they were trying to grab more non-fighting game audiences (well, they specifically said girls) so I think that’s why the RPG elements are in there :stuck_out_tongue:

Side Note: Played a little bit more KOF XII online today and well… the input lag is starting to drive me nuts the way some random timing aspects of SFIV online drives me nuts. You feel like you might even be playing fine, but you also feel like you’ll never be able to play online seriously.

Hit-Checking combos is “almost” impossible. Heck, it’s common to see someone get hit cleanly and deeply by a jump-in and then do a Guard-Attack to punish the jumper for doing what they would normally do if the lag didn’t affect their comboing.

You pretty much have to do a lot of combos while assuming the result.

Yeah… more I think about it, the more I think you’ll hate it while being one of the few people who will be able to play well online despite that.

The online experience went from underwater “all you can do is hit-check, even if you didn’t want to” to “you better be good at seeing the results ahead of time, this is a game of commitment baby!!!”

yeah, no way im showing unless there is a guarrantee its going past 12 seeing that it takes forever to get out there.

Haha you guys playing BF is pretty funny. I used to play that game for a bit.

Cedric is dope with lvl 3 drop kick combos all over the place. Though I prefer Marco just for short short super or short short shoulder tackle. Ah its been so long since I played that game, too bad I wasn’t there I would have Don Valved that shit, though I don’t really remember my combos anymore : (

Update: Fight Night back on track for 6pm or so. The party moved their time from 5:30 to 3:30pm.

Ross, really could have used you on Battle Fantasia man! I’m sure you would have shown everyone a lot of new things and enjoy the craziness too :stuck_out_tongue:

i will stay. if everyone pitches in to buy me a 5hr energy :stuck_out_tongue:

Don’t think I’ll make it out this week.

awww man… was really hoping for more Yangsing, it’s been too long bro! We’ll have to try to make next week an awesome VF session hehe. And HDR too

Hey, I’m new to Portland. Due to my situation, which is a long story, I no longer have access to a console/ my stick/ games. I played SF4 since console release (Viper/ Ken) and have some experience with ST and 3S. I’m definitely looking for some casual play, and since Thursdays are my free day, I think I should be able to start showing up within the next week or two. Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and say whats up to everyone. I’m looking forward to playing with you guys!

Also I’m wondering: what are the other places like in Portland? I have seen Ground Kontrol as well as Tilt I think the other one was called. Are they any good? I will be downtown a couple days a week so I am just curious.

Hey there Monkey(sarefun13),

Welcome to PDX!

There are a few good places, but coordinating can be a bit tricky. Ground Kontrol is a great place for retro games and I hear the Wednesday events (last Wed of each month) are awesome so that is highly recommended.

Tilt is the arcade at Lloyd Center on the top floor next to the theater. It’s the traditional meeting place for the fighting game crowd. The main games being played there are King of Fighters XI (they sent off XII despite being like the first place in the world to have it, which makes me sad, I love XII), MvC2, and Tekken 6 (vanilla 6). Tilt has a big place in my heart because of its history and a great staff that takes care of their machines (well, the fighting and racing games at least).

If you want Third Strike, the best place right now is Game Trader at Cedar Hills Crossing in Beaverton. IMO, it’s the best gaming store in the NW though they do not specialize in collector’s items and imports like Pink Godzilla (I mean Gorilla). But they have a good staff that loves gaming, and you can find tons of stuff as far back as the NES (they have some Atari but not really).

Portland State University has their Random Select Club which has awesome sessions (and free too) but I highly recommend you become an invited guest before going to a session. It is a school club and they are cool people, but I think it’s good to respect that it’s not a big open session, those students do get held responsible for whatever happens at those club meetings. You’ll eventually meet members along the way I think.

There is a Guilty Gear/BlazBlue group, but I think it’s best to get invited to their sessions before diving in.

Also if you are interested in Smash, my friend Casey has been working hard to unite the NW players, especially in Oregon and Vancouver. They have a very strong and big community now and apparently lots of sessions.

Though I run Versis, I do want to see the communities strive whether it’s here at my venue or elsewhere. I just hope Versis can help it all out too, but it’s best for all if all of the communities are doing well and flourishing

BTW, I very much look forward to meeting you.

-Chanchai

P.S. Don’t forget to add yourself to the Oregon Roster. I’ve met some online players that way as well

I forgot there was a new thread haha.

Tonight was freaking crazy. Everything from the 5 am sessions against Frank on XBL to Combo Horse(s)

And damn you Ray for that crazy ass Gen Kick Stance jump in roundhouse, low short, punch stance, super to ultra combo. So EVIL!!! Mad good times. And the Denny’s fun just made it all the better!

6am denny’s raid ftw

More like 6 AM heart attack

Fixed. Longest games of Horse, ever.

I am so fucking tired. Last night was great. I got an hour of sleep before work so I’m just doing some stuff and crashing for tonight. GGs, everyone. Good meeting you Tajiri, although nearly getting choked out is never the most pleasant experience. But you did release as soon as I tapped, so it’s all gravy
