I grew up playing in the Arcades all my life so Happ was the joystick I obviously played with and was used to. Well, after a few weeks playing with my TE, I can honestly say that I’m used to the JLF. At first, I thought it was too loose but now that you have to do dash cancel…I really don’t think anyone wants to be putting more resistance on their stick because it will make those moves much harder to perform. I actually have 2 springs in my JLF right now and its PERFECT! My roommate thinks its too stiff…he is buggin!!! Happy modding and see you fellas online!
I did this mod as well and its awesome!

Microswitch (STICKING)**
For ppl that found the switches sticking; try to test the switches before you put the cover back on, so you can make the adjustment by reduce one fold on the paper.

Just electrical tape only and other tape will eventually rub off.
Question about springs
Okay ,I have a TE stick and just received a LS-33 spring. I tried installing the LS-33 spring inside of the spring that comes with the TE and it doesn’t slide in like the video.
Any suggestions? Did I order the wrong spring?
You ordered the wrong spring, its an LS-32 not 33.
My thoughts on the “ultimate mod”? I tried the double spring thing and i think it sucks badly. makes dashing left and right a major pain in the ass. As for the electrical tape thing, others have said that it comes off and I’m inclined to think that it would as well.
Wasted money on the 2 LS-32 springs i got. Not much money like 1.50 each but still wasted. I even tried cutting the spring down a bit and it just made it as lose as the normal JLF spring or a Home Depot spring.
Not wrong.
I tried out LS-33 Spring and it fits.
Other people have tried it out too.
Even the Spring in AkihabaraShop.jp’s video was Seimitsu LS-33 Spring.
Both videos actually.
Sanwa JLF Ultimate Mod, JLF Medium Spring Mod.
Spring of Seimitsu Joysticks that fit for Sanwa JLF:
LS-32(-01)
LS-33
LS-40(-01)
LS-55(-01)
All I’ve done with my JLF’s is the spring mod.
This is definitely useful for older 2-D fighting games like the Capcom CPS-2 series and the Neo Geo MVS. The stock JLF’s and LS-32’s just don’t have enough resistance and spring back to center fast enough for dash moves. Also, Capcom tweaks the controls on its games constantly so what worked 10 years ago doesn’t necessarily apply to current controller standards, either. At any rate, I find most arcade and home controllers too lose for most fighting games.
For newer polygon fighters, I’m not convinced the JLF mod helps as much (Capcom fighters have generally gotten more forgiving on control inputs over time) but it can make some of the super combos (Chun Li’s in particular) a bit easier to pull off. The charged moves that require a back-forth movement seem to be easier to pull off with a stiffer stick.
I’ve used leftover T5 springs (don’t throw away all the stick parts after your mods!!!) and springs bought from Home Depot for this. The HD springs are definitely stiffer so take that into account when buying. The T5 springs are about the same compression/resistance as the included Sanwa JLF springs so they don’t make the stick as stiff as the HD springs but are easier to install.
Right now, I’ve got sticks with 3-different resistance settings and frankly I can’t think of an easier or more convenient mod to deal with the problem. You’re literally talking a $1 mod for one Sanwa/Seimitsu official spring, or $4 to buy a spring set from Home Depot, taking two of the HD springs from that set and splitting them in half with a wire cutter. Again, essentially $1 springs but much stiffer than the arcade parts…
Anyone know how a JLF with this mod compares to a Seimitsu LS-40? I have a a T5 so I’m pretty much limited to using a JLF for now, but I have swapped the stock spring for one from an LS-55 and put some heat shrink on the actuator (one layer on the switch part, two layers on the gate part) and I’m liking it a whole lot more. I’d like to get a hold of an LS-40 as it sounds like the perfect joystick for me but first I’d like to know how a modded JLF matches up.
Got it to work.
It was a bitch but I compressed the stock TE spring with the LS-33 down with the black plastic holder. Its pretty stiff.
I would leave it but I had some issues with jumping foward.
Question.
Is the LS-33 stiffer than what is in the TE?
The LS-33 spring by itself is a little looser than a JLF spring.
Stiffer LS-32 > jlf > LS-33 Softer
but it’s not by much…
Is there a part number or something to find these springs in the store? I was totally dissapointed in how my stock JLF felt, litterally felt the same as my hori fs3. Just too loose for me, need to stiffen it up, but dont feel like waiting a month to get a spring from the part dealers. If I can find one at home depot that would just be awesome!!
Right on thanks!
Where does the LS-55 stand as far as stiffness?
not familiar with that one… but slagcoin has a comparison chart…
I’ve seen two stock numbers for different spring collections at Home Depot.
Another fellow had a different stock number but I couldn’t find it at my local HD.
Instead, I found this set with 4 springs in it –
Number 16072 in the lower right front
Numbers 59 796 on the back (sorry, I no longer have the whole package so the stock number isn’t all there)
Two 1/2"" X 1-1/2" X .041" springs
Two 7/16" X 2-1/8" X .031" springs
Brand Name is Everbilt; type is compression spring…
The two shorter springs in the set are the ones you want to use in the joysticks. You probably want to cut them in half and not use the entire spring. They’re much stiffer than the JLF, Hori Tekken 5, or Seimitsu springs in the LS-32-01. It’s very hard to fit them onto the stick shaft with the existing JLF/LS springs because of their tensile strength.
To tell the truth, I’m considering taking out the HD springs and getting rid of them. I can’t take them back to Depot since I modded a spring in the set (cut it in half with a wire cutter). They’re almost TOO stiff and I prefer the feel of a stick by doubling up the existing springs or putting in similar-tension springs. IMHO, it’s worth it waiting a month for the right JLF or LS spring…
Tried a LS-33 spring in tandem with the JLF spring in my JLF last week and it felt incredibly mushy. Did not like it at all. I like the speed of the JLF, I would just like it to return to neutral a bit quicker. Does anyone know how I could go about that?
Thanks for the Great info, probly gonna check those out while I wait for my LS32 spring from lizardlick
Maybe you can try the stiffer ls32.
Madcatz TE Stick. Did the Ultimate mod. LOVE IT!
I LOVE the square bits of paper in the switches and the the one thin ring of tape that goes with it. Makes the switches kick in much faster!
As for the 38mm of tape…that made it toooo stiff and not enough throw, I used about 20mm.
I’m really happy with my Sanwa JLF now, still waiting on my LS32 to come in…never tried one, I need to at least experience it
I did the dual spring mod and I would definitely do it to any other jlf from now on, I like the stiffness way better. I’m about to see how I like the shaft tape mod (using heat shrink tubing), but I just had one question.
How does the shaft tape mod differ in end result from the paper-in-microswitch mod (at least in purpose). Just from looking at it, it seems that all it’s meant to do is make the switch activate slightly earlier- but it seems like the tape mod does the exact same thing.
The tape mod shortens the stick’s throw. The paper mod shortens the engage.
