I agree. Problem is, there is proof of Aris talking to Jared from twitch making blanket statements “Sexual Harassment has always been a part of the FGC” and “Don’t take it away from us, we wouldn’t insert sexual harassment into Starcraft!” and the like. He acted and spoke like he was representing the community which I’m hoping people realize, he doesn’t even represent a small % of anyone. I don’t blame the outlets as they are just taking what Aris stated as fact, I blame Aris for thinking he represents anyone but his own self. If we can separate ourselves from him, we’d be in ok shape.
Also it seems people (myself included) didn’t bring much attention to previous posts involving these exact same issues. That’s the advantage of this story breaking the way it is though, people like to brush the bad behavior under the carpet, but its been an ongoing problem for years.

Instead of pointing at the SC community, maybe you should be pointing to “adults”. Having a minimum expectation for behavior is hardly PC AND HAPPY AND FRIENDLY AND SMILES, it’s just a sign of maturity.
I don’t want to associate with a group that finds misogynistic behavior to be acceptable. Luckily for me, the FGC, as a whole, does not. All that’s happening now is that people who have long thought this was repulsive behavior are now speaking their minds on the subject because they want to be able to be proud of their associations.
Powers that be=say the owners of SRK. There are people with real authority and real stakes in this community, they’ve demonstrably known about the problem for a while (see: evo2010 womens tourney), but they’ve also tolerated it (I’ve always assumed because they were friends with the malefactors). This particular story doesn’t just hurt Capcom, it can hurt SRK and Evo.

Not the same situation but just look at the bullying kid who got stabbed. Even if you’re the victim, sometimes you just asked for it and even the law recognizes it. Inb4 hur dur, not related at all.
Obviously Miranda is not at fault for being a woman, no one can blame her for that. The only thing I’ve been saying so far is that this could have been avoided if anyone involved in this drama had put his or her foot down, which didn’t really happen from what I’m seeing.

On your other point, Capcom has the most of the blame (and possibly liability) for that. They should have never hired a known lunatic like him, and barring that should have put a serious stop to it on day 2 when they ‘talked to him’.

The bigger point here though is the huge number of people (some of whom are fairly prominent) who are excusing if not outright justifying the bad behavior.

dunno man, its also about right and wrong. The harm to the community aside, the way Aris acted, and the way people justifying his actions acted were Wrong. You don’t treat other people that way.
Hmmmm he does have a point. It may be wrong ethically(that is to say if ethics even have much of a barring) but it is America and Freedom of Speech implies that if you wanna say it, you should be able to.

Civil rights don’t really apply there though, both Capcom and Twitch.tv have the right to censor anything they please. Given that it’s essentially an employment situation, the only real legal liability (to my understanding, admittedly not a lawyer) would be to Capcom for letting the harassment happen.
