This is how you DON'T play Street Fighter (aka LOL DSP)

-DSP makes his money off of views
-Nintendo was thinking about getting a cut of the pay from people who were making money off of playing their games on YT.
-DSP claims this is theft and Nintendo didn’t make the videos since he did with his “skill”
-Believes Nintendo has screwed over it’s ENTIRE FANBASE and why would anyone buy a WiiU.

He is so self centered!!! Fuck man youre playing a brand new game and giving away how to play it, and its their copyrighted material youre uploading! Yes, they should make money on new game play footage, and youre such an idiot you dont understand that they put more energy thinking thats a right of theirs than you do in your jokes!

Besides, Nintendo should make DSP stay away from their games, hell make them all look bad. He makes all the games he plays look bad.

DSP is fucking right on the Nintendo issue.

So 4 pages in and I’m done.

This guy records his TV? Bullshit, get some capture equipment.

His voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

Why does he think every developer has it out for him to lose? I saw him suck at SF4, AE, MvC3, MvC1, TTT2,Injustice and MK. Capcom, Netherrealm and Namco did not have a “get DSP convention”, you just suck.

“I didn’t do anything!” That’s your problem, get out of the corner and stop bitching.

“Oh he’s gonna sit over there and shoot” Time to read Domination 101 friend!

What a fucking joke.

Not really. No matter what you add in a playthrough 90% of the audio/video belongs to the company that made the game. The music, graphics, sound, characters, etc, and they have every right to get a piece of that if they want. Most people watch playthroughs for the game. (except maybe in DSP’s case where people watch to see him suck, in which case he probably has a point)

Now don’t get me wrong I don’t agree with Nintendo, but I also don’t blame them for exercising their right.

Ultra David whos a lawyer has said several times that the FGC tournaments are based on total copy right infringement, and if Capcom or any other company wanted they could have all streams shut down forever till the tournaments paid them whatever to have them back. Its like when you buy an arcade machine it comes with a certificate allowing you to broadcast their game footage to people in the arcade.
Console versions dont come with that, and if they wanted they could shut down streams if they wanted, but they dont since they dont want to piss people off. Think of when you look at the small print on a blu ray or dvd and it says that the copy isnt for public viewings or tv broadcast. Nintendo just wants to make some more money off their games, if the Wii U was a bigger seller then I bet they wouldnt be doing it.

Of course they’re legally right, else this wouldn’t work at all
The question is whether 1)it is the right thing to do 2)it makes any sense at all

I’m not watching zoast because I care for the story of Super Metroid,
and I’m not watching EVO because I’m interested in the soundtrack of KoF XIII.

Let’s Play’s are stupid and I don’t get why anyone watches these,
but I also don’t get what Nintendo thinks they are going to gain from stuff like that

LP’s have their purpose. I mean, you watch high level match videos because they’re entertaining and you learn something from them right? Same thing with good LP’s. That, or it’s for comedy purposes (ala Two Best Friends Play).

I watched that “This is how you DON’T play SF” vid too many times. I was playing online today, was knocked down in the corner and pressed cr.lk on my wake-up, it got beat out by the opponent’s meaty, and I literally shouted “I WAS BLOCKING!”

…this is not good.

Pretty much this. For example, I’ll never have the time to level up in Demons Souls the way I’d like to, so seeing people show off ridiculous builds during their playthroughs is the type of thing I like watching. On the flip side, a DSP “This is how you Don’t Play” video of the same exact game acts as a comedy.

Confession: I sometimes say “I didn’t do that!” in a DSP-like tone.

To be fair, Catherine has that old-school Nintendo Hard charm in that it just gets harder and more challenging, but more fun and rewarding when you actually take the time to fucking learn how the fucking game works.

DSP should not be having this much trouble on Torture Chamber though.

lol go down a few drinks and practice on rapunzel scrub

Huh, this thread suddenly got a jump in activity. Lots of good stuff to go over, so if nothing else at least dsp has prompted (inadvertently) a useful discussion.

OrochiDemon re, “he makes all games he plays look bad”: To me, this is part of the appeal. If dsp hates it, then the odds are good the game has interesting depth to it and is probably pretty fun if you’re willing to think harder than “boom headshot boom headshot boom headshot infinite ammo hurrrr”. Now, this isn’t always the case… but let’s look at his track record. He hates Dead Rising 2, the new X-Com, most of the GTA games, and so on. These are all pretty fun, so I’m able to use dsp as a filter; if he hates it, then I consider this a selling point. It makes me want to look more closely at the game and see what dsp missed because the answer is probably “a lot!”

On LPs, Nintendo claiming revenue on them, etc.: It’s… an interesting issue. Nintendo is technically in the right here, this can be seen as a valid way of protecting your copyright. Corporations absolutely have to engage in some copyright protection in order for courts to see any future claims as valid; if too many slide by, they can suddenly find their interests on their most important properties are no longer enforceable.

UltraDavid’s insights, as OrochiDemon mentioned, are particularly useful. To elaborate on that basis: what most publishers seem to be doing is turning a blind eye to this, pretending they didn’t see it, because they feel the good-will and free advertising for their game is more useful than enforcing copyrights would be. Others find a proper middle ground, approaching tournaments and streamers to endorse their broadcast in some way; this preserves the good-will aspect, while still presenting some proof they’re minding the copyrights (“your honor, we sponsored that broadcast. This person is one of our advertising partners and this is an authorized use of our materials; we maintain control of the IP in question”, or words to that effect… unlike UltraDavid, I’m not a lawyer and have only a modest grasp of it but this seems sensible).

This leaves us in an odd spot. Technically Nintendo is doing the right thing, yet one can’t help but wonder if they could approach this situation the same way other publishers do. Right now they’re upsetting a decent-sized crowd, and it might drive streamers away from their titles. Time will tell if they change their approach on this topic.

On the value of Let’s Plays: I have friends who enjoy them as idle background noise they haven’t heard before. Music gets repetitive to them, but they’ll seek out random LPs and listen/watch to them while handling drudge-work that allows them to glance aside to the TV/monitor a lot without slowing their work down. It’s a comfort thing.

Likewise, there will be times where I’m kind of tired and want something to occupy my mind but want it to be fairly passive. Watching a good player show off a fun game, and do so with a decent attitude, fits the bill; maybe they’ll show me something I want to play later on when I’m feeling better. Or maybe they’re just flat-out better than I am at the game and I want to learn something from them. “Oh, hey, that area in Dead Rising has a nice hidden weapon; now I know where it is and how to get to it!”

Of course, there’s also the comedy option. Listening to dsp rage at good games is funny, funnier still if I watch it on a fair use parody video so he doesn’t get ad money for it. Or another classic example would be the marathon LP of sonic the hedgehog 2006 by people who clearly hate the game (for good reason). Imitating their furious cries of “physiiiiiics!!!” has become a common joke with my friends!

LPs are not for everyone, but there are people who seriously enjoy them for a variety of good reasons.

On dsp-isms: Not only is this a great way to make fun of him, but it’s also a fun way to teach yourself important lessons on why you lost any given round. Louiscipher and I have taken to ‘insulting’ each other (and ourselves) this way in KOF 13; “I WAS PUSHING BUTTONS!!!111ONE” when you should have been blocking, “NOTHING I COULD DO HAHAHA” upon rolling right into a readied command throw, etc. Teasing yourself about your mistakes this way is pretty funny, and effective since it makes one ask yourself: “What could I have done to NOT lose that round dsp-style?” This builds good habits.

That said, if you do this sincerely like dsp, as LordWilliam1234 has unfortunately done lately… well… I just want you to know there are places you can get help. We’re here for you. In fact, let me get on the phone and arrange a therapy vacation for you under the instructions of Sir Haold Dounbak of Blocmoor. You’re strong enough to get through this, and with him on your side you’ll be cured of dsp Disease in no time!

Edit, regarding Catherine LP by dsp: I like how the dream-monster shouts things like “Take responsibility!” Obviously these are meant for Vincent, the player’s character, as he struggles between temptation and responsibility, but I think that line applies better to dsp himself!

Hey, it only happened once. I don’t think I’m exactly infected yet. :stuck_out_tongue:

LordWilliam1234: Haha, okay. So long as you’re alright!

…Oh my goodness. Watching further into these Catherine vids. “I didn’t do that!” comes up like 50 times. phil, either you did indeed do that or your controllers are going bad on you yet again. Stop throwing them. “Sticks will fly at this location” is supposed to be a joke amongst us, not something you actually do!

Edit: Finished watching the Catherine stuff. If it were anybody else I would be more sympathetic. There are people out there who can function just fine in society, they’re decent folk and reasonably intelligent in real-world situations… yet puzzles just baffle them. For whatever reason, they just have trouble thinking in the abstract ways that puzzles require. So when someone sucks at a puzzle game, I try not to laugh at them since it could be a legitimate “my brain doesn’t work that way very well” issue. In dsp’s case though? Given he sucks at nearly everything else, is openly racist and sexist (worse, he thinks it’s funny)… yeah, this is just one more failing to toss onto the pile of things wrong with him. “Hahaha, are you serious, man? Pull that block one square left and you’ve got a perfectly good set of stairs to go up! It’s not that hard!”

The more attention he gets, the more money he will make. Has he realised this and now just continuing to put on the whiny moaning act to get views or is he actually a complete wanker. The more people that watch his shit even just to take the piss out of him is still money in his pocket. I don’t understand why he play’s games! he clearly doesn’t enjoy them. I really cant stand him at all I literally shudder when I hear his voice now.

He continues to play games cos he doesn’t have any other source of income.

Apparently it’s an extremely stressful job at that.
