For some reason , that method seems really really risky.
I usually either punish blocked blanka ball with ultra , or when he does random ultra; EX roll then punish. You can only punish blanka ultra when he starts to roll away, Dont try to ultra him if hes sitting there holding electricity. But! I digress at the same time that method is still risky.
So I just stick to punishing blocked blanka ball with ultra.
Any honda stuff in there yet HAV?
VS. Gief :
I have a few new best friends VS.Gief
After playing thousands and thousands of giefs around this area and in tourney play. They make it a note to hate.
s.MP
s.RH
Neutral Jump RH
Jump Back LK
s.MP:
Beats lariat at max range
Beats majority of his jump ins at max.
s.MP Kinda works as like a barrier.
Even beats out Early Non-EX Green hands.
It beats Majority of giefs jump in options. Not to mention Ive come to the discovery that , J.MK cross up will beat Giefs Neutral lariat , and right lariat. But it wont beat his moving left lariat. ( I speak as if you are 1p Side.)
I think its for the simple fact that his hit box is too close to you when he is going left. This is more of a gimmick concept if you feel like you have the gief trapped.
I’ve really got nothing on Honda. There’s only three legitimately dangerous Honda’s on the EC, and I haven’t played against any of them.
I could come in here with my anti-scrub Honda tactics, but really, what’s that worth?
EDIT- I don’t know why, but I keep trying to read other forums’ match-up threads… God… they are soooo fucking bad. 80% of them don’t even really discuss the match-ups, they just give you tips on which of your moves beats a certain move from the opponent. That’s not a fucking match description.
Here I am trying to learn shit… that’s what I get for trying to learn on SRK
okay last time i played a gief that was good (ultradavid) he totally raped me HARD. i know about ALL those normals but if the gief is not stupid, knows abel’s options and what he can do, that shit does nothing. ya cool his normals can beat some stuff but you know what? time if wrong and your eating gief’s st.lp/mp and the trade is definitely not in your favor. if gief knows how to play proactive/reactive you cant do shit. literally it was like he was playing a computer and raped him to death. gief has a huge upper hand from the start, rushing you down when you have no meter cant do much, cant roll, reacts with spd, never wheel kick, shit doesnt work. i havent played him since that tourney (he has been super busy with life) but hopefully he gets as good as he used to be quick since he is starting to play again. note that this was a LONG time ago and i just picked up the game again after west coast warzone (dropped it after sbo quals). ultradavid is the only gief player that i have played who was a good gief. all the other gief’s i have played do not play like him at all.
I want to give big thanks to all the advanced players who spent lots of time and hard works in this thread.
This really helps the noobs alot!
You are the best!
From Gen’s perspective, I’m gonna find how well the other person can anti-air me and if he fails to do so I will safely abuse it as much as I see fit. To AA Gen, Abel has to be extremely tedious with his spacing in that he must be aware of where Gen will land, IF he jumps from where he is at, so that he can press the right button accordingly. As Gen, I don’t really have to worry about it so much because the risk reward is so high in my favor, even if my jumping normal is blocked. Sometimes you might have to eat a trade in order to stop Gen from jumping in on you.
Gen’s jumps cover so much ground and air space that it controls Abel’s movement on the ground severely. On the ground, Gen has the best tool (standing forward) for zoning.
However, It would be wise for Gen to not whiff standing forward, because while the startup and range of the normal is superb, the recovery is actually less than average. So if Abel jumps at him at that moment, Gen may have a harder time anti-airing Abel as he’s falling towards him at this angle – this closes the gap and that is where Abel wants to be.
Abel indeed has a hard time getting in, but when he does so and is successful in his mixups, HE DOES DAMAGE. Although Gen has many moves (good back dash, low jump, hit invincible dp, ex-oga is invincible all the way to the wall) to deter Abel’s offense, Gen can’t take damage well at all and that is what I believe makes it an even match up.
Gekiro (the up kick) is hit invincible, but not throw invincible. It also doesn’t scoop with an arch, like a dragon punch. Instead it hits straight up at a high angle.
Abel’s low forward when spaced properly is a good AA against Gen. Also the wheel kick is not a bad option to stop his jumps.
My advice to an Abel player would be to stand just outside of Gen’s standing forward and start analyzing from there. Look for what he wants and act accordingly. Gen will control the match until you find your way in and show that his options will not come without disadvantages. Just remember, if you score a knockdown you can potentially wreck shop.
oh just wanted to add that gen can anti air low forward into hands if you try jumping in with a forward of your own. but with most low health characters you might have to eat a couple to get in and get that damage going.
you shouldn’t even be jumping at Gen… ever. He has too many options to deal with sloppy Abel jump-ins, don’t even bother.
How i play this match is just PATIENT, Gen’s footsies are better than yours, his overall zoning is better than yours. Its really hard to get in on a good Gen, his st.mk -> hands is just too beefy. Just wait it out… really, you cant jump in on him and his st.mk controls the ground, so your only option is to wait for that one opening and go crazy. He can’t deal with your mixup, and ex oga is punishible with ultra/ jump back fierce on reaction. If you get a knockdown on him, your main goal is too keep him down, as you have the huge advantage right here.
Don’t let go once your in, cause if the match resets and you’re playing footsies with him again you are at a clear disadvantage. This match can either go on for 99 seconds or 15… depends on how fast you get in (and that is IF you get in)
Lol that only works if that blanka is dumb enough to ultra from a distance. So far i only get ultra from blanka by 2 ways:
bait it by dashing/jumping in after knocking him down
on my wakeup - he does the ambiguous ultra setup where i either need to block right or left depending on the spacing and timing
Like i said earlier, if you blocked the ultra, follow with cr.hp(immediately after he bounces off you) into ultra. Thats how i usually punish that. refer to this video:

@around 2:10 i blocked his ultra and cr.hp it but i didnt have the ultra meter LOL
Also, I used to be able to lvl2 FA him first into whatever but havent done that much for awhile now so maybe my timing’s not that good anymore. Here’s an old video of that(nearly a year old lol)

@around 2:10, shiro blocked mizoteru’s ultra and punished with a lvl2 fa into cr.hp ultra.
In this match up Abel has to standing forward her jump ins the only way she can get around it is if you Dive kick and i believe he can air to air her or roll away. If Cammy wants to get in she has to Cannon Drill randomly or jump, Blocked low drill Abel gets low strong rekka if the tip of the drill DOES NOT hit. Also if Cammy players are doing instant cannon Strikes(Air drill) you can Air throw her out of it on start up or backdash out of it. If you block cannon spike you get fierce rekka or dash Jab tornado throw.
Really, REALLY good take on this HAV – I like the fact that you’re actually making a point of getting the match strategy right, rather than just a few “this normal beats this normal” type points. Big ups to all the non Abel players getting in here and helping as well. I think getting perspective from both sides of the fight is a great idea, and will also help with general strategy.
Great stuff so far – looks like it’s going to become a great resource for higher level Abel play
I can try to give some input on a couple matchups. Starting with Rose-
Focusing is fairly useless in my opinion in this match due to her soul spiral setups. You can crossup but need to be spot on with timing if she has meter (ex soul throw). The earlier half of the game is generally in Abel’s favor if you know what to look out for. She has a fast dash but she doesn’t want to stay too close to abel. If she does it’s just to do quick damage and get out or after a knockdown. She gets in with the dash and slide or a j. hp if she thinks you’re going to react with a cr.hp. The timing is strict to get a counterhit/ trade/ pop up on that. If you bait it however you can punish fairly easily. back to the slide for a second. The slide is not to do damage, the slide is to set up to do damage. The most popular way is slide then throw. Of course if you predict this you have TT or can tech or neutral jump and get some of your own pressure on. At the same time if rose realizes you’re wise to this she will mix up as well with j.hp, neutral jump to bait TT or whatever. When rose has ultra however is where the problem starts. it’s alot harder to get in since now she’s going to bait jumps from you with soul sparks or even slides. Patience is important here. If you jump she gets free ultra, which has decent range to begin with. Roll can have similar results. wheel kick same thing. Just slowly work your way in until the ultra range is no longer effective. One final note to consider during the match. While she should not be building meter to quickly against abel, she has no real need to use it once she’s controlling her space intelligently. Most roses I’ve played stored their meter for a combo into super for pretty impressive damage. As a reslt you WANT to make her waste meter.Only way to do this really it to keep pressure on her.
Couple other things to consider:
at mid range she has a kick that is pretty fast and annoying similar to bisons st. hk. Look out for that and ex cod it or whatever you feel appropriate but on block don’t expect to beat the next one with a normal of your own.
Soul spark is an interesting projectile due to its speed and the space it takes up. Rolling it is easy but not as easy as say a hadoken or whatever. Also her recovery on it isn’t the best. if you predict it you can hk roll in and punish pretty easily.
I’ll try to get my brother (Dieminion) to post up some Honda and Guile Matchup strategies. He plays a bit of Abel as well so he can give some input from both sides.
