To be honest Juice, SF4 Ken is not a good character to be learning footsies from. Ken is dependent more on “gimmick” footsies… silly mixups and continuous offence, you’re not going to be learning much more from him than Abel.
If you’re serious about learning footsies… CvS2, 3s, or RYU in SF4.
EDIT: I was playing Nagata Lock’s Chun in a long set last night, and I was basically frustrating him with s.lk . The damage adds up. Throw in a couple of CH s.mp’s, c.mk xx rekka’s to deal with s.rh, and Abel isnt in that bad a situation. His footsies game just requires a LOT of patience, and a LOT of blocking, but he’s still got it. I think I got the higheset compliment an Abel player can get from a Chun player … “I can’t believe all your pokes are beating all my pokes.”
EDIT EDIT: S.RH is probably one of Abel’s most underrated pokes. The animation looks gimped, but it comes out fast and has way more range than it should have.
Sorry, but a startup of 14 frames makes the move one of the slowest normals in the game. Damage is also just 100, which is less than most other good long range normals of this kind, and thus does not really help this move in a poke war.
You can use this as a long range meaty or surprise move, or to juggle/reset your opponent after hitting with the last hit of cr.HP.
Every tool you have has it’s use. How can you say “Damage is JUST 100”, when it’s ABEL we’re talking about, the character who’s dependent on STANDING SHORT (40 damage) as his primary tool in footsies. Its his most damaging poke outside of c.rh at that distance, with better recovery. Once you condition your opponent, there’s always situations you can use it in. I’m not saying spam this move all day, i’m saying its underrated.
Abel can play footsies vs. shotos imo. If the shoto is low mk happy you can beat this multiple ways depending on range. if they are throwing it out from too far Sweep when you see it. Mid range S.Lk. If you can get close enough look to counterhit with stepkick and get a free Cr. Fp. lk wheel i viable but never over use it. Good ryu’s will utilize Stand jab vs abel in which case s.mp becomes very viable. Cr. mp can be tough to deal with but if he’s close enough to hit you with that your close enough for a stepkick. If you get in stepkick range vs ryu and get a chance to use it, you should. Keep an eye out for counter hits. Stepkick(counterhit) into cr.fp is godlike and not a tight link at all (2 or 3 frames if i had to guess). This leads into your mixup and that is exactly where you want shotos.
I really doubt that, well all this while CH f.mk dash c.hp is always been known as a 1 frame link. If I have to guess, from my experience, its either 1 or 2 frames link, but thats without referring to frame data.
F.mk is on hit is +3, and by dash cancelling its proly +1/2 more, add +3 for CH, then you have +7/8 frame advantage… andddddddd… cr.hp has 8 frames startup… so i guess its a frame perfect/one frame link? (correct me if im wrong though, my frame data game is still weak lol)
…but yeah, that shit is godlike, landed it a few times against a good gouki last night (CH fmk against his st.hk) c.hp ultra ftw.
Hmm, I’m gonna try crossup j. mk into close st. rh next time I play. I’ll condition them with the typical j. mk, cr mp etc, and when they start expecting that -bam! overhead. And if I’m lucky maybe I can follow up with stepkick and really start the mindgames.
U can seriously throw it out randomly out of their sweep range and get rewarded greatly. Infinite on lp CH vs chun’s throwing out st.rh randomly is probably the best feeling in sf. Ever.
lol i know it works vs “a lot” of chars, i was just stressing on that it works wonders against “chun”. =p
oh and fuck rufus. lmao got knocked out in a intermediate tourney by a rufus… my teammate almost carried the team but lost by a pixel… intense matches… even the japanese went OH SHIT THATS AWESOME watching his guile.
Have you tried looking for infos on the matchup first?(aka search thread function “Honda”) Just wondering. (im workin on answering your questions, hold up lol)
