Interesting video, but the commentary was pretty bad. Made it hard to watch. I mean… I guess they can’t be an expert on every matchup in the game, but they should probably know which matchups are really bad for which characters and why that is.
But see how many lariats went unpunished? Mike Ross often just did it right in his face, got it blocked, and got away without getting hit. As Abel you’re just so scared to hit a button. I was watching Yuuyaa Abel vs Cantona earlier too, and it was the same thing.
If he whiffs the first two swings of PPP lariat, then holds forward and forces you to block the third hit, can you do anything? He’s mostly invincible during his first two swings, and the third hit is fairly safe on block isn’t it?
It was nice to see Abel win the footsies war in that fight, though. I can’t make Gief scared of me, so he just walks forward and then I’m in the corner.
I watched that video hoping to learn how to play against Gief, but it taught me nothing. Mike Ross’s Gief is not very good.
played my Gief sparring partner last night and he beat me 15-0 without any problems… he option selects so his wakeup game is almost inescapable, and I dunno how to play oki against Gief.
you also have to take into consideration that mike ross doesn’t main gief and that combofiend and mike ross are sparring partners, so they know each other’s tendencies.
Lol Jan. I don’t keep up with the scene anymore; I’ve become one of those online scrubs now. I remember [x_x] playing Abel when the game first came out, but I don’t even know who’s still active and whatnot.
Heard you got a sick Gief though. Maybe you can provide some insight on the Abel - Gief matchup
We should like…get some info on honda, I really don’t know what to do against a good honda…if this helps at all this is my input…even though its not much lol.
**Vs **E.Honda 5-5 ****
I’d say this match up is even but a little more on hondas side due to his damage out put.
Alright, so I think that at the start of the match you shouldn’t be too agro, do safe moves like rolls, to bait him to do something for example his headbutt. Of course never be obvious with your rolls or else he will command grab you. Watch out for standing RH and of course command grabs just as you would if u were fighting say a abel in a mirror match, except I really think honda’s do command throw’s WAY more. One thing alot of honda’s like to do, is cross up then they do crouching short into command grab. Now you can try to dash back but with honda you definetly have to watch out for his Hundred Hand Slap which does CRAZY damage. Whenever honda has ex, be cautious about your jumps because he can ex headbutt, or butt slam if he happens to time it right but most likely it will be headbutt.
So yeah…that’s my input hopefully this could be put up on the front page if it needs to be tweaked at all feel free to put your input because I really don’t think there should be any reason why there should be ANY blank matchup slots on the first page.
yeah… info regarding the honda matchup’s actually in this thread and the other one, but things got lost in the mix and the OP(both of them) dont really update no more.
btw, rolls are not “safe things” to do against honda, you can eat damage for free. oh and i dont think you should ever be too aggresive against honda, not just at the start of the match, heck i think its proly better to be aggresive first(but not silly rushdown) and then be a little more defensive when he has meter.
f.mk is a crucial tool in this matchup(you have plenty of options to followup), and if you landed a TT you can crossup and do a lot of damage. obviously you need to be careful when he has meter, what id usually do is bait the honda to use the meter to ex headbutt.
honda’s command throw loses to TT and its very punishable if whiffed, its not a big problem in this matchup imo.
oh and use far st.lk more too.
also, busta made a video on dealing with some of honda’s moves (headbutts, buttstomps, j.hp etc)… worth checkin it out.
some random note, ive noticed a lot of people not mentioning meaty cr.lp/lk on opponent’s wakeup, its really good since you can link s.hp or s.mp/tick throw/blockstrings to it up. if you watch a lot of japan’s top abels, they do this a lot, crossup roll meaty c.lp/lk…
I went into training room after that, if opp is colse, you have to block crouch the first hit, the sencond hit(buttstomp coming from above), you have to block standing or just back dash: http://tinypic.com/player.php?v=1zmp6r7&s=6
Dont forget FA-ing the buttstomp, can get free crumples if timed right.
Oh and after watching your vid, your problem is you didnt block it right, non-ex buttstomps only hit once(on the way down, not up) so you need to block standing and also facing the right position(you can get crossed up). You should’ve roll away or FA, well blocking properly works too… but not TT, especially against the lk version…
I dont rate anything below 4 bars, then again I dont play online that much too.
I play online only to refresh muscle memory on matchups and to test some new crap.
The Chun matchup is pissing me off. My friend plays really good footsies and does the ambiguous crossup like it’s nothing (well, it is easier to do on Abel in the first place). Reacting to the hazannikeshoes seem to be more of a pain in the ass than before and I feel like I’m not punishing them like I should.
Someone please enlighten me on the matchup. Also, just want to clarify some of the things in Juicebox’s tidbits regarding Chun:
Does s.hp stuff her all her pokes or just certain ones? I always thought poking in with c.mk would be the more preferable way to inch at her.
close s.hk as in the overhead? I guess now would be a good time to learn that overhead combo. Also, wouldnt a crossup on a Chun w/ no meter give you more options? If she blocks, TT, block string, or s.hk. If it hits, BnB. Or is it still risky considering that if you don’t do a perfect crossup she FADC and it’s back to playing footsies?
I know a good Chun player(20K+ BP, pretty good), recently he told me that he played on psn too but i forgot to get his psn id. I’ll try to set something up soon…
I never really have a problem against her so called “ambiguous” crossup move… I hate her jump in HP more(while most chun will follow up with a low attack, ive fought a chun player who did the 2 hit jump in HP and then jumpback HK and it’ll hit me since im too used to blockin low after that)… basic advice against chun: block low always and you gotta be abel to block hazanshu on reaction or even focus crumple it if you predict it.
I can block them, but am I supposed to have frame advantage after or does she? That’s why I feel like I’m not really taking the advantage afterwards because Chun would keep going at it and I’d have to play my distance.
