Hey I got bored and thought it would be nice to make a thread suggesting third characters for S/D. Now of course the popular choice right now seems to be sentinel but others work too. Sooo, c’mon guys and list your personal favorites and tell us all about the pros and cons of using this character w/ Strider/Doom.
I think old school Strider/Doom/Commando is still good. It can create a nightmare for Sentinel+rushers.
I was just thinking today that Ruby Heart could make a good battery for strider. The only problem would be the teams huge dependency on doom. Both Ruby and Strider NEED doom, in some way or another. I suppose they could tough it out. Anyhow, Rubys got a good meter builder in sj. rk, has a frame kill super, has decent chipping/zoning capabilities with doom, is a rather decent point character and works well with doom(again).
Of course, thats just a lower tier character.
Sentinel works good of course. Storm works rather well too, but Sentinel adds more… bulk to the team.
I’m gonna try Ruby/Strider/Doom sometime soon.
OMGWTFBBQ I RHYMED!
storm is a popular choice also. plays well solo. doesn’t require a lotta meter.
cyke is most of the time better than commando except against runaway storms. hella fast meter building.
OR is beastly if you can use him properly.
IM/doom is dope.
BH as the 3rd character is very old skool, but still works well. builds meter like mad.
spiral. you got a ghetto spiral/doom trap, plus one of the best batteries in the game.
magnus…not as good cuz you don’t have psylocke…but hey if you can go into the rom from any connected hit then this isn’t a bad choice.
cable. works better than you think. both strider and cable build meter very very well…the only problem is that both of these characters will be less deadly because they will never reach 5 meters.
Good stuff guys. I was hoping that it wouldn’t be just a bunch of suggestions of god tiers. I was really shocked to see someone suggest Ruby Heart. This is the kind of stuff I was hoping for when I started this thread. Keep it comin’.
Cammy seems good on point for Strider/Doom or as a last character. she does really great against Cables and sometimes sentinels. She can deal good damage and build decent meter. Also she has some great combos and damaging setups with Doom and can be very pressuring at times. Plus she has a good framekill, assist, alpha counter, and DHC. And as an assist, well, thats self explanitory.
my favorites? um…

that’s pretty much everyone i’ve used and experimented with strider/doom. i’ve found something remotely useful for each one. i’m probably goin to look at some other characters eventually. but now i’ve been more focused on getting better with my serious S/D teams.
Dang, I thought I was indecisive. Hey what do you guys think of Psylocke for S/D. We all luv her assist (except when someone else uses it) and it would make Doom way more effective and an easy way to combo Ragnarok.
Holy shit, I played that Ruby team…
Mille Fantome xx Orbs OWNS!!!
Its ridiculous.
You do ruby hearts qcb+kk, and right when the chest comes out, DHC into Orbs. The ghosts cover nearly the entire screen and keep on coming for a bit. Strider can just teleport right into the opponenty to start the trap, with the added bonus of ghosts swarming the opponent. Extremely good shit. The problem is that mille fantome is pretty slow. I think c.rk xx sublimation xx mille fantome xx orbs would work.
I was also thinking Megaman could work well. His proj assist is pretty good, as its a two hitter and is difficult to neutralize. It would work decently with strider… like crappy drones. Kind of removes the efficiency of the cat in linking into ouro… unless you delay it. Anyhow, you could do bomb/bird/cat after megamans projs assist and it would probably be good enough to start the trap. And I think that MM’s hyper megaman AC (launch, sj.lp, sj.lk, hyper megaman) could be linked into a hitting ouro. Of course, its an air one… so it may not work TOO well. Regardless, mega works well as a battery, so he would be good for Strider regardless. His proj assist also nullifies sents armor, making him more useful. Did I mention MM’s a good point character? Cause he is. I’m pretty sure there are some infinite set-ups from doom.
Psylocke for S/D would be… okay. She’s a DECENT point character, but not too decent against the big four. She would be kinda crappy at building meter… so I’d say no, unless starting with strider. Even then, thats limiting strider a lot more, cause you’d probably prefer doom/psylocke over psylocke/doom. I dont think its worth it.
Now that I think about it, it seems like Cyclops would also make an amazing choice. Great battery and priority. The assist is obviously worth mentioning as well. I wonder how well strider can utilize it…? Anyone have experience with this team?
Don’t hate on my homegirl Psylocke. Her assist can really set up Doom for ac’s and the Infinite and what not. No one uses Psylocke on point unless there just trying to get better with her. But her assist can set Strider up for ac’s too. Granted his aren’t ultra damaging or anything, but it helps for building meter for the trap. And Psy can fight too. I hate how everyone is always forgetting that. (and don’t forget… she’s the hottest character.)
I’ve gotta stop playing this game and get a girlfriend.
I’m not denying that Psylocke is a good fucking character. Back in the day i used her as my point character for fun. But she really is not very compatible at all with S/D.
Think about it. What does Strider/Doom rely on? Meter. Copious copious meter. That meter is not used just for chip damage(though the chip is very nice). The trap is very key to his play. Allows him to combo into ouro. Allows him to set up resets. Allows him to start AC’s, and more. Strider really needs it to take him to that next level. Now, he needs a method of getting that meter. That can come very easily from a third character outside of S/D. That character is usually a battery. Thats the reason why Storm and Sent both are good for strider. they can share it with him. Unless I’m mistaken, Psylocke is not very good at building meter. I may be wrong, as her triple jumps might help, but she doesnt really have any rapid fire large meter-building attacks. Her point game is not good enough for her to be a starting character, which is that third character should nearly always want to be. Strider would have to start first, and he;'d only start with one meter, which kind of limits him. Psylockes assist isnt a very ground covering assist, so she doesnt keep the opponent locked down as Strider is building meter for himself. Thats why Sent is so good. Drones combined with cats and AC’s are good. When Doom dies… what does Strider do? He’s pretty much done. With Sent he can hold a fight. With storm he’s okay. Other characters he’s okay. Psy might give him a ghetto rushdown, but nothing amazing. Regardless, I think Psylocke doesnt really work to well here. If anyone disagrees, please, go ahead.
Yeah, but usually when people use cyke they put him as an AA anyway and start w/ Strider so whats the difference? IMO, it’s a lot better w/ Psy because it’s so easy to combo into anything w/ her. But I’m not gonna make a huge thing out of this because I may love Psy, but I still use Sentinel.
I’ve actually never seen any Strider/Cyc videos… it seems like it would make most sense for cyclops to be first, but what do know?
I only have one vid and I don’t even know who it is. The video just says “world_most_dangerous_trap” and cyke’s assist is used a lot to compliment the trap. Wait… I’m starting to prove myself wrong:confused:
i actually tried using strider/doom/cyke. i didn’t know if i should put cyke first or not though…that was my only problem. cyke is a really good battery, but i found myself chipping with his MOB and SOB and stuff, that’s why i put him last. also, since cyke’s AAA is so great and all, i figured strider wouldn’t have a problem building meter for himself (except against cable). rushdowns would have trouble with strider’s mobility added with a great AAA. also, i found a somewhat damaging combo with cyke’s assist. right when you launch, call asist, sj. fp, qcf. fp. it does a little more damage than a normal air combo, i believe.
come to think of it, i think my team was strider/cyke/doom. after all, doom’s assist should be the one coming out more often. and cyke/doom can still chip like mad. oh well. i’m not too good with s/d. just saying what i experienced.
Cable is overrated nowadays. On a team with Strider and Doom, he won’t last very long against any kind of rushdown without burning meter. And Cable+Strider is a serious meter guzzling team. Man, MST would give this team all hell.
Cyke compliments Strider very well because he clears the floor of anything that might get in his way of trapping. How many assists do you know of that will beat cyke clean all the time? None that anyone really uses. Any assist that stays on the screen for an annoying length of time, Cyke can clear out and leave room for strider to do his stuff. Cyke also lets Strider get orbs for free on rushdown sentinel. Along with all this, he can hold his own at point. I would start Cyke at point against anyone except Sent/Commando, Storm/Sent, Cable/Anyone, and Strider/Doom. Overall, knowing how to use Cyclops with Strider/Doom requires you to be quick and competent enough to follow up after a cyke assist connects.
Mummy-B, Cable actually works a lot better for Strider/Doom than you might think. Keep in mind, Strider and Cable burn meter in two different ways. Strider keeps slamming meter down and refilling like a drunk man at a bar. Cable stocks up and waits for the right moment, then hammers it all down to make it worth it whether it’s by killing the point character or punish the assist. If cable never gets that opportunity by the time he’s weak, he can just dhc to strider. they both can handle themselves pretty well when backed with Doom AA and build meter for themselves. The main problem with this team is that it doesn’t really benefit you if you’re a one trick pony. You have to be at least decent with both Strider AND Cable for it to work since Strider and Cable’s assists compliment each other to an average level at best. There is no one character on this team that can use two assists as crutches. I’d also say Strider/Cable/Doom and MST give each other equal amounts of hell. Ask Mixup about it. He’ll know what i’m talkin about.
What do you currently use as a third character now ,Kai?
My main all purpose team has been Strider/Cyke/Doom for like 2 and a half years now. I’m willing to start strider or cyclops at point. It varies who I’m playing against. Sometimes, I’ll sub Cyclops out in tournament matches and use Sentinel or Cable.
I use Strider/Sentinel/Doom mostly against MSP teams because Strider/Sent is practically unrushable from the outside at just about every angle. The plan is kill magneto, then turtle like ho with Sentinel. It usually works the first game. If I lose the second game in a best of 3 series, I’ll switch back to cyclops to throw their rushdown gameplan since Strider/Sent and Strider/Cyke require two totally different approaches to rushing down. I’ll also use sentinel at times against some Storm/Sent players if I feel like my execution is off, since Sentinel can survive the Storm/Sent DHC. But overall, I usually start Strider first. I would use Sentinel more, except my Sentinel isn’t that good.
I started learning Cable/Strider/Doom when I saw my Strider/Cyclops/Doom was getting raped by Sin’s defensive Sentinel play style some time after evo 2k2. Cyke just doesn’t touch a flying sentinel when he’s flying all the way back. Nowadays, I always keep it in reserve against guys who play defensive with Sent/Cable/AA variations. Although Strider/Cyke/Doom can cut it for me in these matches at times. But there will always be a time i’m playing a defensive player who is that much better than me, and i’ll need to beat him at his own game.
The following teams, I use slightly less often in tournaments. But they’re teams I’m willing to use:
I’ve used Storm/Strider/Doom once before against Duc. It didn’t turn out too well mostly cuz of my lack of storm experience. But Storm is still in the bag for me. I’ll be ready to bring her out whenever i feel that i can run for 40 seconds to build 5 bars.
I’ve also used Strider/Doom/Tron several times against magneto based players. I’ll probably be using Strider/Tron teams a lot more often nowadays since I’ve been experimenting with it a lot lately.
Also in tournaments, I’ve used all 3 shotos, jin, and commando as 3rd characters mostly for their assists. They’re also in the bag on reserve for tourney play, but I hardly have use for them anymore when Cyclops fulfills their main purpose and plays better at point.
At this moment, I’m working on some “surprise” characters which i discovered work amazingly well with Strider/Doom. I’ll probably give it a shot the next tournament.
this might sound a little crazy, but as cyke vs flyback sent, perhaps tk optic blasts are useful in this situation? tk optic blast can’t really be punished by anything from sent full screen so I don’t see any harm. If he’s flying straight back regular tk ob should hit, flying backdown, optic bullet will hit, which he prolly will fly above to avoid, or unfly, if he flies above, then you can sj/tk ob and knock him down. If he’s flying upback then you can just regular sj and ob and it should knock him down. Just seems to me like cyke can hit flyback sent at any time safely barring no framekill to hail or something. Although it does pitiful damage, nuisance factor is what counts eh… worst comes to worst he might get an unblockable attempt I suppose but you should beable to sob sent in that situation, or maybe even double jump into d+rh.
If you tried this before I’d be interested in what the sent you were against did to stop it.
