Chevy … “Like a Rock” :lovin:

I was supposed to buy some Irwin quick clamps but I went to get a shopping cart and forgot to pick them up.

I was searching for a 10" finishing (60 teeth or more) cross-cut blade for my miter saw as well but I can’t find any. My user’s manual says not to use any thin-kerf blades but all the aftermarket ones seem to be thin-kerf. Any suggestions?

Had to use crappy cell-cam, so please forgive the poor image quality. These are post-assembly:

Yes, this ain’t any official layout;). I designed this pretty much for my hands and playing style.
I sealed and put first coat of primer on last night…REALLY looking forward to the finish line :D.

I don’t quite understand what you are getting at? If you are talking about drilling on the inside of the frame I would go with pocket screws.

Michael

Looking good there vma. you went a little overboard screwing the top panel into place. I just use one in each corner.

Michael

Thanks!

There are a few screws there, but they’re partially for aesthetics. The case will be painted black, red hardware, and the graphics will have golden accents. The screws are nice polished brass, that will be countersunk into the plexi:).

I considered embedding some precious stones in the cp, but thought that might be a bit much…lol.

I just hope i don’t screw up the finishing… all the mdf work i’ve done has been strictly utilitarian (shop stations, jigs, etc…), so the most complex finishing i’ve ever done on mdf is a protective coat of paste wax… the work surface of the router cab in the pics is an example.

Wow, this thread is mega-interesting !

Hey 3cks…just saw your zebrawood box…you’re giving me ideas:D. Wicked grain - what’s it like to work with?

V.

Nice VMA! it looks super smooth. I can see myself playing shmups, xmen, ninja turtles, street fighter, mortal kombat and tekken on that. :bgrin:

Well can’t wait to see what picture you put in.

I use titebond III man. I really think anything beyond that is overkill. I have had boxes drop from 8 ft to the concrete ground and not come apart before the blocks are even glued in. Just titebond III and some good clamps. That’s my opinion, I haven’t had any problems yet.

I started using thin kerf just to save on power, motor life, and wood. It works great, and thin blades work better on plex and polycarb in my experience.

Zebrawood is about medium difficulty to work with. It’s fairly dense, and can chip on the router. It’s not too bad tho. Wenge is probably the worst stuff ive worked with so far, its very brittle and chips and splinters easy. It looks fantastic when its all done though.

Am I the only one trying out Gorilla Glue? Come on guys join the band wagon and try it out.

Thanks Cap! Well, I’ve discovered I lack the patience to get a mirror finish on that freakin’ thing… stain/poly on natural is lookin’ REAL good right now…lol. The pragmatist in me just wants to PLAY!!

The art is an enhanced version of Akuma’s kanji in foreground, with an interesting image of him I found on the web in the background; so aside from him and the kanji, it’s black on black:).

Like I said before, I love the grain…i made a small night table out of ash, the grain pattern is similar - but zebra seems to have a much richer colour…as in ash has none:rolleyes:. You may have inspired me to make another box - zebra, of course:).

Nah man. They did a test with every glue on the shelf. Titebond III smoked everything else.

Gorilla Glue has proven to be weaker than the regular PVA glues, i.e. Tightbond I, II, III.

So I got my test frame which was a butt jointed 6" x 4" wood. I did the round corner thing with a router and now it does make sense. Thanks michael. As for the very corners, it was still pointy - which you have to free hand like 3cks said.

LoL anyhoo, after shaving the edges and the corners I went on to the ghaleon test to rip apart the frame. I weigh about 190lbs.

Jumping straight up and down does not prove anything to rip apart the frames so i did three things.

  1. Wiggle my belly test - stand still on top of frames and shake your yogi bear body left and right while your foot provides pressure and friction in 45 degree angle hoping that the frame will rip apart.

  2. Split the frames - Lay your foot 45 degree angle on the top and the bottom frames (essentially opposite side of frames) and give it all the push you got on your leg strength.

  3. Bang the box - Grab the one side of frame and keep on banging opposite side of the frame on concrete repeatedly.

Gorilla glue passed all test. : )

Yes but will change to titebond III if gorilla glue proven to be weaker.

Michael are you going to join us in using Glue only on butt joint method?

So this the box that survived the torture test.

probably not because I don’t use butt joints.

Michael

Kaytrim is a 45 degree kind of guy.
