Are you referring to the recess for, say the joystick mounting plate?
Yes it is possible to cut out the space for the joystick mounting plate with chisels. You would have to go slow and be careful not to go too deep. As long as the chisel is razor sharp then you can slice through MDF a little bit at a time with just the force of your hand.

I’m finally trying to glue my controller box together but its very hard without any type of corner clamps for miter joints. Has anyone used band clamps?

Or regular corner clamps are better?

Was thinking about band clamps to save money but if anyone had experience, would appreciate your feedback.
Is this also good for wood for only metals and plastics?
Don’t know about the band clamps but the corner clamps are … ok. Lol they work well but my problem with them is that the clamping jaws are not tall at all. I did a test on some 2" tall MDF where with 4 corner clamps, the bottoms clamped well but the tops had a gap. It was a very small gap but I wasn’t pleased (since I want my case to be around 4" deep) so I ordered 4 more so that I could clamp the tops and bottoms.
And if you do go with the corner clamps, you may want to place a sheet of folded paper or something so that if you tighten the clamps hard the wood won’t get damage (because it’s made of metal).
Good feedback:tup:
I already have 4 corner clamps on the way before I read your post… seems like I need 4 more… LoL
Right now, I tried with masking tape and you are right… if the bottom corners are flush, the top has a gap and if the top is flush, the bottom corners have a gap.
BAHAHAHHAHA:rofl:
I’m also using MDF as my controller casing. Do you just glue or screw and glue?
I tried screwing but with a drill, its hard to drill the corners. Drill head touches the wood and you end up screwing in an angle. lol
quick question but im about to install a sanwa jlf in an american cab. i know how to get the sanwa buttons in there but im not to sure about how to remove enough wood from the panel. it has i belive happ compitions or p360 sticks in it but my friend wants a jlf and im thinking about doing it with a router(sp) any advice? thanks
I used band clamps and pva glue to stick the corners. Works fine so far. If your stick is tall say >1-3/4 inch then you’ll need the 8 corner clamps
Thanks dude I was about to sharpen the bevel. Since my “Flat” is at an angle
I know this guide is going to be useful when my forstner are getting dull. I still dont get the pictures about which side is bevel or flat side. I appreciate if anyone can circle the picture for me…
EDIT: I found this link lol http://www.real-world-solutions.org/calvin/forstner.htm
How bout using a SANWA JLW? Its made for thick cabinets.
Take a look at this link and see how the author mounted the JLW.
Hrmm… controller box is 3" tall. drats… what happens if I use the band clamps on this thing? :razzy:
thanks alot but he already got his jlf and in the pics of that link the guy used concaved(sp) buttons on that nice stick. i hate buttons like that. anyways i did read that with the router you just go in there and cut out the part of wood out. is there like a tutorial some were?
depends on how thick is the band clamp. Mine is 1-1/4 inch so it fits well with my 2" stick. I guess you’ll need 2 set of band clamps too-.-:clapdos:
Read page 7 of this wood working thread. Michael from Kaytrim’s Kustoms has a great post and link on some how to.

For amount of carving, I would say 6-7mm deep if you have acrylic glass on top of the Control Panel. Else you would have to 3mm deeper if no glass on top of CP.
That will get you the official japanese cabinet joystick height. Basically make sure you got approx 23-24mm of joystick height from top of CP to bottom of balltop.
2 band clamps still cheaper than 8 corner clamps. Also may speed up work too.
omg thank you and ill check it out. so your saying that about 7 with glass and 10mm without glass. 23-24mm of joystick height from top of cp to bottom of balltop ok i got it and thanks again. ill post up pics and let you know how this turns out.
Try to go for 6mm or 9mm. Try digging less for more wood support.
I just found a good video tutorial how to sharpen your forstner bit!
