The "What was wrong with this game?" thread

Corrected for great justice :wgrin:

I felt underwhelmed with NGBC. I imported it and KOFXI on the same day. The concept was cool, and it was a lot more refined than SvC, but…It was missing something. And it compensated with ridiculous loading times.

NGBC and XI had like Marvel like tiers. I thought the games were fun, but really, absolutely nobody (I mean, nobody) was playing them. I could never find a soul to play the games with.

I guess once Atomishwave gets emulated we can expect the games to get some play then.

Well the PSX port is like the worst version of the game

and my guess is probably the learning curve of the game

exactly my thoughts, mostly a large number of games have this problem, some games because they dont have a strong visual impact as others in the market, and others have the problem because their desing, like ah because it has loli theme, or hnk and gg because they look anime wich i found ludacris because sf mvc2 and kof are in an anime style too :shake:

wich bring us to another point all the community is composed in its majority by fanboys more than by people who play the games by its quality, making excuse for not to play other games, its really rare to find people who play the games more by the mechanics and features and not by the name, looks or characters involved in it

i dont really feel that the game has a heavy learning curve, its true that you need some practice and a relative understanding on the mechanic to do some stuff but with some practice the game can be played with a good level

more like this

If you’ve already followed SF for quite a bit of time, SFA3’s learning curve is pretty manageable, but it’s easy to forget how steep it truly is. If you’re introducing noobs to the series, SFA3 isn’t a great game to start them on. It’s pretty impermissive.

About VF5, I do totally agree. It does look boring, but I know it’s a good game. If I actually had a 360 or a PS3 I would definitely play it.

I’m just going to re-iterate this, notice that all the games that are popular have metric fuck tons of BS involved with them. Unfortunately, BS in games is what makes them popular. It’s like it creates a race to see who can get around it first. Another thing is the hype factor. 3s is only played for the fact that Street Fighter is attached to the title. It’s pretty obvious when some top players say that it’s a bad game in general. It’s the same with SNK and KOF. GG is probably where it is b/c the other elements of the game like the music and sophisticated looking graphics.

Oh and shiki, about all the other GG games being broke and unplayable…someone who is a lover of SNK has absolutely NO ground to actually say that,so…your point is what now? I can easily apply that little bit of background to SF and KOF. None of them got it right on the first or second tries. You can’t expect the first game of a series to be perfect…It just isn’t happening.

some characters were just too good (not just the bird). but i don’t know why the players gave up on the game instead of just banning those characters or something… a shame really

My thoughts exactly. I mean it was definitely doing something right but it just wasn’t polished enough, not to mention the lack of production values.

Way to miss the point completely.

The fact that NOBODY gets it right the first time was it. Sitting there and saying something like a couple of good SNK games doesn’t make up for a bunch of crap and then saying a couple of good GG games makes up for a bunch of crap is the exact definition of what we call a “double standard” AKA “fanboy reasoning”.

Reading Comprehension.
I know it can be tough, but please try it next time.

Right.

This kind of falls under an explanation I once heard over why you can’t ban the top tiers in marvel. If you do, you basically get a new top tier, pretty much still just as dominating, but different.

A lot of the tier problems in the game come from all the weird links you can do in the game, which likely would have been toned down had the game not been rushed.

Theres also something to be said for long periods of time just watching your opponent combo you. Long, repetitive combos tend to wear on people after the 100th time.

Return of Shiki - I think GGAC being good justifies GG1 being bad.

However, KOF98 being good does not justify SvC chaos being bad. Do you see the difference? Similarly, GGAC being good does not justify Battle Fantasia being bad, even tho theyre both by Sammy.

However, i also feel that Soul Calibur 1 being good does not let Soul Calibur 3 off the hook from being bad. It works both ways imo, but Soul Calibur and Tekken, both Namco fighters, imo, have nothing to do with eachother in terms of justifying anything.

Heartnana hit the nail on the fucking head. Past success doesn’t excuse current excrement because there was really no reason to fuck up in the first place, ESPECIALLY if nothing new was tried.

is it weird to think VF5 looks just fine, but have a problem with the gameplay? the stages are really well done and i actually like how most of the combos are short.

i dont actually know what my problem with the gameplay is. all i know is that its really hard for me to have fun. i thought i wasnt having fun because i suck, but i have fun with a lot of games that im not particularly good at. maybe its because i could usually figure out what im doing wrong in those games, for example: Guilty gear: learn to block better and do more combos, Tekken: stop doing unsafe shit, mix it up better, Melty Blood: do low jab a lot (ok only half serious on this one). in VF5 stuff just doesnt seem to make sense in the game, i get hit with a lot of stuff that shouldnt hit me (according to various online resources, and the manual). obviously my knowledge of the game is flawed. however every time i try to fix that it feels like work (boring) instead of training (much less boring!) and i stop.

i spent 3 hours playing a good player the other day trying to get into the game again, but still didnt feel it. its weird. VF5 has most of the things i want in a FG like rewarding skill and minimizing spam/random stupidity, but for some reason im incapable of having fun with it. maybe someone can explain that.

lolis aside, i think this is why stuff like arcana heart and melty blood dont really take off over here. that, and the “low jab lands = you die” mechanic. i know thats a gross overgeneralization but theres something about getting hit by one relatively easy to land move and then having to watch your character get hit with some 32 hit, instant airdashing chain combo that lasts half a minute. then later when you get hit by some other move, it links into that first move and you get to watch the same combo again. i dont believe it gets any more exciting even if youre the one doing the combo.

You just described the one thing that will make me hate a game quicker then anything else. (low jab into boring combo) I’m just afraid that’s all the Japanese care about these days. Also, those 32 hit combos take a good bit of time to learn, which makes casuals shun these games entirely, and hurts the playerbase.

That said, I do think as a community, a lot of people like abuseable tactics. I mean, there are people on this site who argue FOR infinites, which to me is the stupidest thing ever, but people actually argue for that.

Sammy is only a publisher they dont have the rights over the games, as they werent involved in the development either, the rights belong to ASW, ASW is the only responsabel on how the games are developed, just to correct

Yeah, I sorta didn’t specify that striker Joe was probably the only one that kept you grounded for another combo, whereas the others allow only for some juggle combos (which I guess is no problem with guys like Kyo, who can keep them in the air forever). Still, though, I felt the KOF 2000 engine to be too “Marvel-esque”. Some people may call me crazy, but I actually liked the KOF '99 striker system a whole lot better, since it wasn’t used to actually extend combos, but more like a combo starter.

I also didn’t like the whole “taunt to regain striker bombs” feature, since it wasn’t equal for all characters (Terry had no problem regaining them since his taunt is so short, but others like Shingo are pretty much screwed if they try).

Then there was Counter Mode, too…

Sheesh, KOF 2000 WAS really fuckin’ broken. Kinda makes KOF '96/'97 look like VF 5 in comparison… :looney:

There are plenty of reasons why BF didn’t do well, and I think that you hit most of them right on the head, but I have to disagree with at least the bolded point. At first Watson was indeed thought to be top, but after people learned to play the game (even though he was mobile) he moved his way down the tier list. In fact, Donvalve is one of the better characters in the game, but he is slow and doesn’t even have a dash. And Guile is top tier.

The infinites definitely were a problem, but they were taken out of the console versions (Ashley’s is taking out of JPN version, all the rest are taken out of US version). The wake-up throw glitch was also taken out of the console versions. I know that this doesn’t help the arcade in any way (and therefore cannot save the game), but I think that the US version is definitely a playable game. Too bad that it will never see play.
