The Virtua Fighter 5:R thread... It's in Japanese arcades!

Not impressed by Ulala or Amigo?

Make Nessa back BLACK and THICK like VF FOUR.

HAHAHA.

Not that I’ve kinda given up on it (thank god for Tekken 6, Blazblue, KOFXII) I feel a little better.

Here’s a good R channel for you guys.

You can get a good understanding of how the game is played watching Jackys, and also this guy’s Jacky is very flashy so all the matches are entertaining and fast.

^ That’s awesome, because I want to learn a game that I will never actually get to play.

No seriously, I do.

Just try it!!!

In the interest of attracting new blood and keeping this thread alive, let me
tell you how I came into the VF fold. “Wrote a song 'bout it, like to hear it here
it go.”

Before I moved to Japan in 2003, I had all but given up playing fighting games.
None of my friends played them, arcades were few, and online play wasn’t quite there.
However, going into all those Japanese arcades really made me yearn to
get back into the fighting groove. I hadn’t played Tekken since T3 and I had never
played Virtua Fighter before. I still liked SNK games so I mainly played KOF, and
Neo Geo Battle Colosseum. But those games got back-burnered in Japanese
arcades really fast. I had stood around watching people play VF4 Final Tuned, but
I was always hesitant to try it. Why? Read on…

In some ways, the VF community are their own worst enemies. One way to make
sure your favorite fighter stays niche is to constantly bellow about how "deep"
and “technical” it is. That’s what VF fans do…constantly. They also seem to try
to use as many Japanese terms as possible to describe the game play. Contrary
to what you may have heard, everything is not cooler simply because you say it
in JA-PO-NEEZ. VF fans, whether they do it intentionally or not, constantly make
people think you have to have a Phd to play VF. You don’t. It is technical, there
are some “interesting” mechanics that you have to learn. But it is far from rocket
science. In **some **ways, I actually think it is more accommodating to new players than Tekken is.
Whoa! Whoa! Put down that wet mackerel, let me 'splain.

For one thing, there is a much smaller cast. Think about all the new Tekken
players that are going to pick up T6. Once they nail down the basics of their
chosen character, they then have to learn the tricks and traps of how to fight
over 30 other characters. I mean damn! That’s a lot of crap to know.
Next, while VF’s wake up game can be rough, Tekken’s is downright brutal,
and I guarantee it will be one of the chief forum cry topics after T6 drops.

So, I was in Tokyo. I had been playing Tekken DRO and was remembering very
quickly why I quit playing Tekken a long time ago. I was not having fun. Then I
remembered that VF5 online had come out for 360. I walked down the street to
the 24 hour shop and picked it up. In that moment my desire to play fighting
games was renewed. I loved it. I was constantly checking faqs, reading up on
the system, and e-mailing my Japanese 360 friends asking for tips. I was also
dropping big bucks into those cherry Lindbergh cabs too. I couldn’t sleep at night
because the Japanese were spanking me so bad my ass was glowing red in the
dark. But I still had a lot of fun.

I had to quit playing, however, because of life. I was making plans to leave Japan
and I had to get everything in order. This means that I never even got to touch
VF5R. I came back to the U.S. and figured that would be it. However…

I got bored of SFIV in record time. I won’t go into the reasons, but I think after
about 30 online matches I was snoring. I can’t get hype for T6 because I am just
not into Tekken anymore. The other day, I popped my VF5 disc back in the tray
and remembered how fun it was. It has been a long time since I played it, and
I have basically forgotten almost everything, but it will be fun learning everything
over again.

The moral of this story? Pick it up and give it a try. You can probably get it crazy
cheap at Gamestop by now. I am not going to promise that you will like it, but
I do think you will at least be pleasantly surprised. If you do like it, tell a friend.

Sorry for the novel, but I would really like to see VF get more love. It really is a
great game. SRK VF players, shoot me that friend request and let’s get some
games. I basically need to relearn everything so free wins for you!

OMG ULALA COSTUME. Wtf…why wasn’t I informed?

Also I agree with fenris to an extent. the individual systems and mechanics in VF are absolutely not hard, and you can pick it up and just have fun with it. Putting it all together is the difficult part, but that can be said about any fighting game. Also saying something in Japanese that could be said in english just to make it sound cooler or more obscure is just about the lamest thing. Sometimes I punch people for saying “yomi.”

Don’t punch me.
Yomi is my cat’s name.

SoloFenris speaks real talk.

But we can never be friends because he plays Ver.C. Has it online for X-Cock 3Shitsky.

Imagine how hard it is for interested new gamers to get into the series by owning VF5 for ps3. Virtually no one to play(haha I made a pun).

In fact, if I didn’t love this series from the very beginning I would’ve stopped playing VF5 after learning that I wouldn’t play anyone else in it because I have it for ps3. Actually, that’s kinda what I did. Sorry VF.

Plays DRO.

You probably already have it, but if you don’t already, you should pick up VF5. Even though it’s not the latest version, it’s still a cracking fighting game, and I still get tons of play out of it playing against friends on Xbox Live.

Thanks for the youtube link Slide, I’m always on the lookout for good VF matches!

i’m actually gonna get online in a bit.

there’s still a good number of people playing it. not like sf4, but there’s still competition.

Sadly I’ll probably be playing DRO too…PS3 gets the shaft again

added new vid… this time with English and Japanese commentary. Click the bottom right button then CC to turn it on. Let me know what you guys think!

Haha. Reno is my fucking hero. Repping a nasty sumo to one of my fave VF2 tracks!! They let you select them before match? Don’t sweat the close loss man. You are GDLK to us in America lol.

Keep the vids, blogs, info and insight coming bro. Maybe some GO! and Owie too.

You probably could’ve widened the time frame that the captions stayed on but other than that it’s good stuff like always man.

Oh wow, that is the first time I’ve seen a breakable wall in action. The match was really excellent too, thanks for posting.

I watched a few of the other matches, you’ve faught some really good Wolf Players too which was great to watch (he’s my main, but I’m still an absolute scrub compared to you guys it seems )

Cool match man, although the commentary was kind of fast.

Speak for yourself. Quite a few American players are no slouch at VF man. Some players I know, are good friends with some of the top Japanese players, get training with them, and some players come to and from there at times.

That basically just happens on this forum, where your average member does not “play” or has not “played,” the game.

No, actually, that is one truth about the VF community, and this is coming from a dedicated VF player. That shit dates way back to when the Tekken/VF rivalry was at its hottest, and it still rears its ugly head today from time to time.

Oh damn, well I stand corrected. Atleast from what I see on VFDC right now, it’s not rampant I guess.

My bad on that, FlyMike.

Releasing VF5 for the PS3 without the programming hooks to add other content still strikes me as one of the dumbest moves ever.
So I can totally understand your lack of motivation. Here’s hoping for a release when it reaches “final tuned” status.

On a similar note, I was going to play DRO the other day and remembered that
I can’t because I bought the Japanese version while I was still living in Tokyo. I
kept thinking “Why in the hell am I getting nothing but no bar Japanese players?
Oh yeah, now I remember.”

If you are going to get Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, we’ll co-op it.
