The VF5 Thread: The future IS now. RIGHT NOW

as a Lion player i’ve got a few questions if anyone’s willing:
how in the hell are you supposed to fight Lau ;;
Lau is one of the few characters who seems to just rape me for free.
i try and make him fear Lion’s lows and 336P / shippo shoshenshu, i get blocked and thrown / MC’ed into a combo
i PP or 46P+KP, he evades
i do the aforementioned and go for [2]6P+G, 66KK followup, he MC launches me
i try 2P 1P+K or 2P 2K+G to low check him, i get piledriver thrown
seems like all i can do is try and bait whiffs then 44K P+K or evade P+K+G and hope that i got counter hit to do the most damaging juggle
that and hope he doesn’t know when shinpo torou soushu / 43P is coming so i can drop him for 66KK then okizeme
how in the HELL do you play this matchup ;
;
i also can’t seem to find any vids of Chibita or Fudou fighting a good Lau, which would at least give me some idea :confused:

EDIT: i think i found my answer…you rush them the hell down with every mixup possible

First off spacing with Lau is always a bit of a risk due to his great range game. Lau is a very basic VF character and he emphasis’s strong basics. He is generally played aggressively and emphasis’s the basic defense system ie blocking/evading/TE/fuzzy rather than sabaki’s or reversals.

I think you just have to overcome his defense. Like use standing jab, elbow, kneee, and low jab to sort of hit check his defense and see how he reacts. If your elbow or knee is blocked you can always fuzzy to beat any basic 50/50 mix up. If you use standing jab, you have advantage on block to pressure with.

If he uses big combo starters, try to bait them out and evade to your own big combo start or block and punish with PK or elbow knockdown or throw.

Check his frame data on VFDC to make sure you punish correctly and pressure correctly.

If the Lau you are playing is fuzzy guarding, try using Lion’s fast lows to suprise him or use dash delay throw to get a nice 0 frame on him.

Trying throwing from advantage only so even if he tries to use a launcher to beat you, it will throw clash instead.

Learn to break his best throw directions when you end up in situations (like blocked mid circular) where you are going to get thrown.

If he is always blocking your lows he is probably capitalizing on your habits, punish him with Lions strong mids like the elbow to knockdown or the overhead double hand slam.

Just strengthen your basics, and then you can start adding all the flash that Chibita, Fuudo, and Suguru like to do.

If you expect an evade:

  1. Throw (delay the throw if they can ETE)
  2. Delay attack

2_6P+G> 66KK is his stable combo after that throw… I think you might be delaying the input if he can MC or even block it.

Your setups for lows “2P > 1P+K/2K+G” is kinda predictable. You’re already in a crouched position, I’d expect a low if I’ve seen it more than once. From what I’ve seen/experienced from Chanchai’s Lion: he does one of Lion’s sweeps for oki, after he locked down my offensive and I’m blocking to afraid to do anything, or to beat my tendency to use highs/throws.

If your opponent is beating your lows consistently, stop using them as often or at all until you put the fear of mids into him. I mean, lows in VF kinda suck for the most part, but Lion’s are somewhat decent (relatively) as they knockdown. But the risk to reward is not in your favor.

You get thrown from moves that recover low (do they? I’m not a lion player)?

Basic guide line:
Learn your frames and use moves with good properties.
Don’t get predictable with your moves.
Throw when you have an opening.
Evade at disadvantage or use Lion’s gimmicky movements.
Use his stance> catch throw.
Learn your own bad habits and fix them.
Learn the opponent’s character.
Learn your opponent’s habits and exploit them.

yeah i noticed his spacing and zoning is ridiculously good when i realized you can’t set up meteor punch on him with Lion for shit --
also fuzzy guarding > me, i’ll definitely have to work on dash delay throw, i see Chibita do it all the time but that’s such an unnatural motion for me, it’s like TTT wavedash or something
isn’t it like 336 neutral 336 neutral or something? it seems really good because you could shippo and launch out of it like a Mishima or throw, but what gets me is how the hell Chibita can buffer evades out of it so fast on reaction
i also don’t think i’m used to throw techs quite just yet, i’m never really sure what the best option out of one is, i would like to say standing P+K just for the followup 46P+K, KK but this is one of those games where nothing seems guaranteed to me ;
;
thanks a lot for the help though man, much appreciated :smiley:

man i love you guys :sad:
i live with a guy who plays Goh, so i almost always know what to do in that matchup, but this definitely helps me quite a bit
the 360 port’ll help me a bit more because then i’ll have my own copy to practice with finally :sweat:

Chibita evades seem like on reaction cause THEY ARE for the most part on reaction, that’s high level japanese play for you. Notice how top players can check stance while doing the evade to evade half circulars majority of the time.

Delay throw is not hard at all. In fact if you suspect fuzzy guard with Lion it’s easy.

Just do this.

insert situation where you are at advantage
opponent does fuzzy
You with Lion do 33 (crouch dash) cancel to 6P+G

You will do Lion’s 2_6P+G and it will zero frame due to the crouch dash you did right before, beautiful isn’t? If the dude sucks at throw escape or doesn’t attack back this is devastating.

Keep in mind, this is only for people who block habitually or fuzzy perfectly. If you the dude is attacking back, you had best stuff him with an elbow or some fast mid or what not.

hmm, that’s interesting, it seems like maybe this game gives you a lot of leeway on moves like that
kinda like Akira’s backdash shoulder thing that he can do like 116P+K but the command is actually [2]6P+K
it’s interesting that in the same game you have moves with leeway like that but then you have K+G release G after one frame

ummm not really leeway, that’s just how you do from crouch moves instantly.

Akira’s old VF4:EVO 33P>P>2_6P+K>2_46P is a wrist sprain due to how fast you have CD cancel.

Let alone stuff like SDE to modified double palm.

Hell one combo for Sarah vs. Brad in Open stance is stupidly hard for me to do because of CD canceling.

I really hope it’s sometime soon after the 360 version.

VF5 expansion

Sega hinted that they may/could release an online/ver. C patch for the PS3. The info is here:

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3162425

The online petition for them to do so is here:

http://www.petitiononline.com/juney1/petition.html

There was a petition for them to add online to the 360 version so Sega IS listening! Get on it folks!

Would also like to point out that the T5:DR expansion was made for a game that wasn’t intended to have online in the first place and its only a 591mb download.

Bastards have killed my Shun!

Hahaha, nice.

I’ve been downloading VF5:nunchuck: verB/C matches all day. I play Jacky and Vanessa. My game plan is to train an hour and a half with each everyday. I signed up on VFDC(dragon9) and I have my matches so I’m getting ready.
For those who have played VF for PS3: Is it really easy as I’ve been hearing? Like how people started complaining that quest was so easy that a crap player could beat it? I know someone that recently played VF5. Here’s his take: “No, I believe 5 is harder than 4EVO. I had to beat arcade mode TWICE to beat DURAL” Me::arazz:"What’s your ranking?"Him:“10th lvl Dan. It’s the highest in the game.” ME:"Bullshit. What happened to the champions and such?"Him:“Dunno but that’s the highest ranking I got and that’s highest I ever fought anyone.” Me::rofl::rofl:
I think this guy sucks cuz HE DOESNT USE EVADE. It’s too much work.
So it’s PS3 VF that easy? Cuz if it is I’m not gonna play it. I’m thinking hell no. VF can’t be THAT easy…

Any game’s CPU is easy when you get to it, hell even VF4EVO’s cpu isn’t that bright at times.

VF is hard when you play real opponents who know what the hell they are doing. Aim to find real competition and foster real players, the CPU sucks.

PS: Ver. C Sarah is the new world power, Flamingo for National Bird.

:tdown:

I understand why they would tone down the sabaki but did they really have to nerf it that much? It’s Shun’s only useful one and they had to give you disadvantage on hit? Bah…

Also, not a fan of the PPPK -16 on block. Totally unnecessary.

Yes I’m bitching here. Whatever :arazz::arazz::arazz::arazz:

^He earned it, that sabaki is so fucked up. Beats all single limb moves, is very fast for a sabaki (no I’m not joking, sabaki’s are supposed to be slow god damn it), it normal combos into the mid punch (that also stomach crumples on normal), hell think of it, it’s MID->MID. Once it lands you eat 60-80 dmg depending on how many drinks the deuschbag has and your in a head forward/stomach down fall situation. So wrong.

Everything else is just “Okay people really didn’t like this guy so we better make it up.”

IMO though, Kage and ESPECIALLY Lei Fei deserved just as bad nerfs.

this is the best game i have ever played. got it on ps3 and getting it again on 360 when it comes out.

That actually reminds me of the first time, I played EVO, I button mashed my way to the third fight with just Vanessa.

Which is sad, because when I tried to play her straight, I barely could make it past my first opponent.

It depends, if you set to standard and go to the last couple arcades, the CPU will fuck you up for being stupid. The CPU basically plays 100% “Moral” playstyle, ie if you do something -12 they will punish you with the best thing, if they are at advantage they will press it, if they are at disadvantage they will block/evade/etc.

But again, Human player is much better.

I’ve been watching matches with Sarah(cuz she’s hot) and man she is kicking ass ALOT. I’ve seen Sarah beat Jacky alot more than Jacky beat her. Ver.C is THAT different? Sarah’s flamingo is a beast!
