Despite the ver.C changes I’m still gonna get the PS3 version regardless if it gets Ver.C update(doubt it tho’).
I wonder if they will make Kage’s TFT a HCF like in FT. That would be funny.
I don’t SPoD is that hard to do anymore. It was alot harder in the VF2 days but it’s been easier to do with each version it seems. DLC is still a bitch, but I usually use a sidestep for the last part.
This stick has Sanwa buttons while other RAPs have Hori buttons. Also it has the 2 button plugs, I think that is exclusive in this edition. (“addition” as Hori is calling it heh heh)
Really it’s the only advanced combo in the game I can’t do three times in a row. I pretty got Lau, Lion, and Pai down. Akira is the next level to step my game up. But he’s is definitely for the niggas who have very good dexterity.
VSHG = Sega’s way of saying “Fuck you, all games that aren’t VF.” It’s annoying if you’re at Tekken, Street Fighter, or Soul Calibur sessions with a VSHG because you have to actually re-do the controls.
The SA edition has only 6-buttons in the main area? That kinda makes it useless for some games. (Soul Calibur and anything SNK) If you really want Sanwa parts, you might as well just mod the HRAP3. Might be cheaper that way actually.
You have to change the button mapping in game when you play non-VF games. You could physically move the buttons around on the inside of the VFHG, but then you would have to button map for VF lol. So…
VFHG is a great stick though, don’t get that mixuped up in the annoyance of the button mapping. Funny thing about the HG is that on the inside, there’s actually metal plates Sega put in to give it more weight. So if you get the stick and it’s too heavy for your liking, you can pop it open, take out the plates, and walah, same stick, different weight. I like the weight of it though.
Button Mapping shouldn’t be considered much of an issue. Especially with a save file that keeps the remapped settings. The only exception I’ve seen is Mortal Kombat II where you can’t remap the buttons.
I would recommend a VSHG over a modded HRAP3 in general, with the exception being T5DR (I haven’t tested to see if the latest firmware fixes that one issue, otherwise there is no issue). The VSHG has Sanwa parts (and buttons) and is cheaper than the HRAP3. If you’re having issues with the SA layout or its price, I say you might as well get the VSHG. But I’ll admit that unless a firmware fixes it, there are dropped inputs on T5DR But hey, HRAP 3 is also a good stick too and I don’t mean to knock on your recommendation of modding that stick. They are pretty darn good, modded.
I don’t see how the SA is useless for SC or SNK. They conform to the standard Japanese layout of the arcade controls. I’m guessing you’re assuming the original design of the button layout was like some typical US or Korean straight line? Personally, I like the curve where your thumb is on Guard, Index is on A, Middle on B, and Ring on K. I can understand your preference, but not the term “useless.”
They do at least make it easy for you to mod the stick to have 8 buttons on the SA.
I mean while you’re playing a session with a bunch of other people and you’re the only one using VSHG.
Just what is the standard layout for SC and SNK in Japan?
For SC, I like:
X A B K
G X X X
With VSHG, I would have to do something like this…
A B K
G X X
…which is just not that comfortable.
For SNK, most of the time I want:
A B C D
But I’m fine with…
A B X X
C D X X
…for some games.
Overall, it’s just the kind of thing where if I have money for both VSHG and HRAP3, then yay. But if not, I’m going with HRAP3 until Sega makes a stick that doesn’t try so hard to not be naturally compatible with so many different games. There’s no reason for the unusual button layout and 2 of the buttons not in the main area.
The VSHG layout you mentioned for Soul Calibur is generally the standard layout for Soul Calibur, the layout works because of the curved layout of buttons in Japanese arcades (and the VSHG and HRAP3). If you have really big hands, I guess it could be a factor with having trouble with that layout, but I haven’t seen that problem much with people I know with big hands.
As for the curve arrangement when applied to SNK games (or Tekken or Guilty Gear), that is a less natural transition for a lot of people, though I like the curved arrangement for everything.
The only game I’ve played that demanded an 8 button layout for me, are the Tobal games where you had Guard, High, Mid, Low, Kick – at least if I wanted to layout the controls like VF or SC.
Anyhow, in the age of consoles and BYOC, it is all up to preference. So go with what’s best for you
