The VF5 Thread: The future IS now. RIGHT NOW

Wolf’s throw arsenal looks like Eugene’s :wgrin: Can’t wait to do a KS.

Does anyone use the reversals often? I’ve tried a couple of times with Akira, and the only successful reversal was on accident. Seemed alot easier in the Tekken series. I’m thinking that VF might be a little to quick, or that I’m just not used to what will be thrown.

Well dash-in throws on a blocking or neutral opponent (0-frame throws) are really deadly, especially because there isn’t any noticeable throw animation. Much harder to escape on reaction.

As a Sarah player I’d just like to say thank fucking god for this game’s character balance.

Reversals only have 10 active frames, so you need to try them in very specific situations. A good time to try a reversal is when you are at a large disadvantage, but not quite guaranteed punishment. Here, an opponent is often going to want to hit you with a mid attack or a throw. For instance, try a mid reversal after a shoulder ram is blocked, or after a low attack hits normally (non-knockdown).

To make reversals safer, input throw escapes right after you do the reversal - for instance, when you see your shoulder ram blocked, db+P+K, P+G will beat mid attacks and neutral throws.

Finally, if the timing is really putting you off, try using Pai. She has reversals that are done by f+p+k or df+p+k; they’re lower damage, but the timing is much less strict, 16 frames or so.

Gotta try that dash throw…sounds vicious.

Great tips on the reversals. I remember doing alot of the b+P with Pai in the early days :lovin:

Hey Sarah players, as rough as it may seem for our little blonde girl she can still back a mean punch.

Unlike Aoi, Sarah should be on the aggressive side imo. You need to really be all rounded and take advantage of the entire game system to win with her. However if FL and white chicks is your thing, do not be distressed by the tiers, she can still win and with style.

Try to take control of the match right away and get into Flamingo AT ADVANTAGE.

PPKK is a great way to do this as it starts from jab which she has a fast 10 frame jab, the kick part I believe is a special high that will stop low jabbers and if the whole thing is blocked you are left at advantage in FL.

Try using her elbow to fish for Counter hits and crouch staggers than hit confirm to 6P4K to enter FL as well.

Her 4K is arguably her most abusable FL entry, it has decent range and is mid while giving a ton of advantage on hit and block. Try using a backdash to cause a whiff than using this move, this can be done without incuring execution problems by doing 44 (backdash) 64K.

Use her slam kick for most combo starts (4K+G). It’s especially great on wake up as you can cancel it into FL for mad mind games. It will combo on any hit and is technically safe on block.

THROW THROW THROW!!! Most people will try to counter Sarah’s more abusive moves like FL K, sweep, high strings, and crappy floaters. Sarah’s throw game may not be as good as VF4 but it’s still important to get as much damage as you can.

Use her 360 throw for the highest damage (55)
61P+G throw can followed up with a down attack (53)
46P+G is great for reversing positions (50 dmg if I recall right)
Use neutral and 6F+P to mix it up or if you need to throw really fast, they don’t do alot of damage but they are still good throws.
7F+P is a running catch throw, use it to catch people sleeping while they are spacing, if it whiffs your screwed but mix it in for maximum suprise.
FL 360 throw ALWAYS USE 360 THROW, it’s a catch throw, and it’s also her most damaging throw now

I use reversals quite a bit, though they aren’t always the best option.

When to use reversals and which reversals to use isn’t so bad as long as you can read a few general things from your opponent. Part of it is understanding the flow in VF.

-If your opponent is a beginner or a masher, I sort of advice not using reversals and just beating them out with solid play (which is easy enough actually). Defend their spamming attacks, counterattack. Interrupt with low punch, flowchart into other stuff. But for the sake of reversals… a lot of beginners and mashers may spam high. If you’re seeing the PPP string a lot, then you can reverse high. If they are generally mixing up levels purely at random, then stick with solid play over reversals.

-If you’re playing against someone seasoned in the game. Even someone good, it’s a bit easier to know what to reverse and when to reverse. In the general flow of battle, you will deal with mid attacks more often than not. So when you are at a disadvantage, you’re likely to receive an incoming mid attack. So there you have your mid attack reversal available. The reason it’s emphasized to do this at a disadvantage is because by the time your character recovers from disadvantage, it’s likely that the opponent’s attack will be in execution and you will land the reversal (instead of doing it too early). Do reversals in disadvantage (after someone blocks your attack, mainly). That same rule applies to doing dodges, do it when you’re in disadvantage. Don’t try to just do reversals (or dodges) out of the blue on anticipation.

-Another tip on reversals is that because you’ll be stuck in a whiffed reversal animation if the opponent doesn’t do anything, go ahead and plug in two throw escapes really fast while your reversal is whiffing. In fact, everytime you do a reversal, just make it a habit to plug in two throw escapes. It’ll be like 3 defenses in one

VF is a very fast flowing game, but you’ll get the hang of it

Sarah is cool and all…she was my girl on VF4 but now Vanessa is better!

I personally like Vanessa as well, her combo chains damage well and fairly good speed for beginners usage.

Still haven’t tried Sarah, lots of peeps tell me she’s tough to master - but could be deadly in the hands of a professional. Jacky I felt was probably easier to learn based off my experiences in previous VF’s so I started toying around with him first and foremost.

Thanks for the Pai tip…was able to reverse a buddy of mine last night a few times  “How did you grab my punch?”

I’m not exactly a novice at the game, having played VF1-3 pretty extensively…Limited exp on 4, though, so I am catching up a little. Need to find a cheap copy of EVO for the training…

Check out this Jacky combo -
This is freaking hilarious.

Hey I use Sarah as my main. just my two cents here.
I think you should try your best not to use ppkk. None of the hits are Special high. And it’s a tad slow. And highly noticeable and interruptible. If you are looking for a decent launcher go for her 2pk,k. it may be punishable, but you have a better chance catching people with it then with 4G+k. If anything with Sarah you need to poke if you want to win. Throwing with here wont get you very far. The more you poke with her the more you are going to be able to use your Fl cancels and set ups. Then you will find yourself hitting combos off of all her moves. Sarah fishes for CH. You must force there attack.

Last hit of PPKK is special high, and is advantage on hit and block to FL, first kick is advantage on hit and full circular.

2P+KK was very good in EVO/FT where the second kick tracked Evades very well and the first kick was safe in EVO and only throw punishable in FT. Otherwise in VF5, it’s stupidly easy punish even when delayed (you just use low punch to punish or interrupt anyway).

4K+G is very good cause it’s safe on block, can be canceled into flamingo, and provides consitent damage. Sarah’s poke game is more built into her FL so stuff like 2P+KK which can be punished/evaded/interrupted/backdashed with ease is not really all that amazing anymore.

You need to throw them to win, you need to throw period cause FL does not give you enough damage potential. FL is not like Lei Fei’s stances where he can poke in one kick and proceed to breath half your life. FL is more conditioning with the only major damage coming from either your FL throw or low punch sabaki. Sarah’s launcher game does less damage and is far far more risky and punishable. While Sarah’s throw game is weak she has a lot of throw directions so you should use throw where applicable. Especially in Nitaku where you can be potentially safe cover with throw clashing.

gg.

I’ll try out Sarah next week, still getting my El Blaze up to par.

is glad he waited

Remember VF5 is still PS3 exclusive in Japan.I hope you really don’t think their gonna shun out the japaneese players that bought it for PS3.Plus Sony is really trying to step up their online content,so hopefully. PS3 VF5 owners can get what 360 will get.I’m not picking sides, nor an fanboy but when It come to a game like this, one of the top five arcade games in JAPAN,expect the 360 ver. or a even better ver on the ps3.(probably only in japan)

Oh Shit!!! It’s about time we get some screens.

Ok I want expert analysis from the VF elite. I wanna comparisons, I want info, I want polygons counted, pixels sifted, I want textures viewed under a microscope, I want color depth analysis, I want a pixel for pixel lighting comparison. I want, I want…

Ehh nevermind. How bout a side by side screenshot comparison, though? I’m almost nerdy enough to do it myself.

360 PS3 Screen Shot Comparison…

Disclaimer: Ok obviously this should be taken with a grain of salt or however you say that cliche. Assume that slight color or brightness variations should be disregarded, as its impossible these screens came off the exact same displays. Since we don’t have the games to put side by side on the same HD setup this will have to do. With that in mind, these comparisons are done using the same resolution screen captures, and all these captures were released by Sega themselves. I know this because 1up, Gamespot, and IGN all had the same ones. Now, on with the comparison!

First up:

http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/748/748774/img_4514432.html

Ok, I can’t tell a goddamn difference at all here, other than the PS3 is slightly darker. What do you think?

Second:

http://media.1up.com/media?id=3271714&type=lg

Ok now this one was much more telling. Right off the bat you can tell that the anti-aliasing on the 360 cleans up the more aliased look of the PS3 version. The characters in particular look cleaner. However, it also appears that the textures on the ground and roof of the building look better on PS. Could better textures be a benefit of harddrive cacheing on the PS? What do you guys think?

Ok now this drew a WTF from me. This was the closest screen I could find for PS3, and either its a different time of day, the wrong stage, or it was captured with AV cables…damn. Is the 360 that much better with ‘bloom lighting’ or whatever the fuck its called, or does this stage have a ‘morning’ and ‘evening’ version to it? Someone please fill me in.

I couldn’t find any good arcade screens to compare these with, let alone of the same resolution. So feel free to provide them if you have them.
