The VF5 Thread: The future IS now. RIGHT NOW

If you notice, the only real big simplification is the ground bounce combo.

The DLC is actually two parts. One is the newbie combo that has no directionals in the last part, it does half the damage of a regular DLC. The other is the “real” DLC that you get when you do the actual motions. It does the original damage and it also gives you a sound cue about doing it as Akira makes a different grunt. :wink:

Yo, VF fans … I will be interviewing Alex Valle about the U.S. release of VF5. If you want to offer input (or just represent, yayyyaaaa), here’s your time.

You can find information on how to access the radio by clicking here.

umm…ok lau is throwing me after strings so fast they look like auto combos. i need tips for beating him.

And what the hell happened to the training mode from part 4?

It’s a barebones port, be glad it’s arcade perfect lol.

Go to www.virtuafighter.com for more in depth info.

Also you may be hit by 0 frame throws which why you think you are getting auto combo’ed. Try using Fuzzy Guard more (CD then cancel with G to block a mid), it’s very very good in VF5, especially at making throws whiff. You can also use more advanced stuff like Throw Escape Guard, or Evading Throw Escapes.

Due to the fact that i’m the only VF player I know, I have these long spells were I don’t play and I forget things. It’d be nice to have that training mode as a reference. Oh well…i’ll hunt through vfdc for basics.

buy the strategy guide. Its pretty good as well

Lau gets my vote for most annoying character. Was the game made for him? Is this Virtua Fighter: Lau Edition?

try watching the vftv replays of whatever character you are using against lau. i’ll bet you can find something useful there. you can even turn on the command display while its going on if you don’t know what a move is.

I been watching a LOT of the YouTube vids that people have been putting up of their
first days having VF5 in their hands. I must say I’m really impressed with the new mix
ups and newer move sets they handed the older characters. I haven’t seen everything
yet but from what I have seen, man, Kage who was my staple character has really
been fleshed out for this installation. I cannot wait to finally play this game. (when I actually
buy it/PS3—D’oh!) I’m jealous of all you who do have it.

lol Lau can get pretty annoying, simply because his game is mostly pressuring the opponent like crazy.

btw, which character were you using?

I don’t have a stick yet, so i’m playing half-assed. I use Wolf and Akira though.

Is the button layout for the arcade version of VF5 different from the PS3 version? If so what is it? Is it:
----------K
--------P
-------G

Im new to this game, but the default button layout on PS3 feels unnatural to me

That layout is correct for the arcade stick.

If you are playing on pad, I highly suggest you try this layout.

X= Guard
Square= Punch
Triangle= Kick

Use your thumb on guard, index on punch, and middle finger on kick. This will emulate arcade control the best, and I find it the only way to play pad.

Man I want this game bad. When I was into VF (IE the arcade had VF 2 and then VF 3 and 4) I used Wolf, Jeffrey, Lion, Shun-Di, and my boy Akira, which gets my vote for one of the hardest characters to master.

Strange thing is I would rack up wins with Akira and I couldn’t even pull off his most potent moves. Wolf and Jeffrey are underrated in my opinion too as they can easily obliterate opponents with one move and ring out bitches for free.

Yea, I agree (I play with an arcade stick). Thumb on guard is way more natural for me for some reason. My follow-up is this: Is button mapping allowed in VF tourneys? (esp. Evo2k7?) I used to button-map when I played Street Fighter on SNES where Y and B would be Fierce Punch and Kick for me, but when others want to play, they have to switch the controls back to default, so Ive gotten out of that habit, mainly by getting an arcade stick, but the unnaturalness of VF5 default PS3 control setup is going to force me to go back to that habit for this game, it seems.

Sorry, One more question: Do people feel that having a button dedicated to hitting 2-3 buttons (e.g. L2 for P+G+K) is cheating in some way? My assumption is that in the actual arcade, there are only 3 buttons, so having extra buttons to input several buttons at once doesnt really emulate the original arcade setup and as such could be considered unfair… but I dunno, what do you guys think?

My Wolf in VF2 is a beast. Giant Swing 60% damage, df PKG grab, and bf to counter the mid kick. Unblockable clothesline with horrible recover. Ahh Those were the days.

Some people do. Actually playing with a pad is putting yourself at a disadvantage (obviously). Whether the macros are too much of an assist is where the debate/riots start. They end when you buy a joystick.

I could be wrong since a VF cabinet hasn’t been in my city for a while but wouldn’t the buttons emulate the arcade best if it was like VF4 pad controls?

Square = Guard
Triangle = Punch
Circle = Kick

Last I remember, that’s what the arcade buttons looked like.

I would still use in-game menu macros for the shoulder buttons even If I have a stick… since EVO allows it!:wgrin: I like the idea of using an arcade stick because the stick has way better movement than a pad (using Lion’s :r::db: throw on a pad is torture on the thumb!!).
