He knows how deep it is. All he’s saying is, it’s always a big disappointment when there is all this praise from everyone when a new VF is coming, and then a year later there are barely more VF players than there were before. It’s not even limited to tournaments/gatherings, just the overall interest is not there. I remember there was a VF4evo thread here awhile back, and only like 2 people asked questions.
It’s just frustrating to play “that” game…you know, the “I would play, but _________. I’ll definitely play the next one.” game.
It’s not like the competetive environment in STL was ever all that healthy for VF, either. That’s not really the point, anyway. It’s nice that you enjoy the game and all, but I’m very skeptical of the kind of people who don’t play the game regularly(or at all) and heap on the praise for the game’s depth because I don’t think they actually understand why the game is deep. I’ll be over-joyed if you prove me wrong, honestly.
I don’t recall saying that, or anything else about you. You said that people talk about this game to “sound intelligent or fall in line with the forum consensus.” I just pointed that some people are interested in the game because they just like the game. Sometimes, it can be that simple.
You’re assuming that everyone’s in a position to enter a tournament. I’ve been a VF fan since the first game came out but there’s never once been a tournament anywhere near me
That’s a totally understandable position, but basically you need to be proactive(but not overbearing) in getting people to play, if the interest level is there. And no, sadly VF comp ain’t strong at anime cons. Hehe.
Anime nerds totally do not play VF. You’d think since it’s really popular in Japan they’d flock to it, but GGXX or various doujin fighters seems to be their fighting games of choice.
These guys put on one of the largest North American VF tournaments a few years ago. A shame their scene is kind of dead-ish now, though.
And yes, I do understand that people can simply enjoy a game. But when you bring a game’s “depth” into the discussion I don’t believe people who’ve spent very little time with the game have any clue what they’re talking about. Again, I invite you to prove otherwise.
I’ve been looking at this game, and it really looks good. VF2, along with SF2and AOF were the games that got me into fighting games. I rented VF4 awhile ago, and while I was no master, I enjoyed the game alot. Now that 5 is coming, I’m getting back at it; I just ordered Evo. Train up bitches.:nunchuck:
Yeah. GGXX, Naruto, and Smash, last I checked, were the only games they cared about.
EmX: “Depth” isn’t exclusive to VF, you know.
People who speak of it are usually into other fighters as well, which is why it comes into question among people who aren’t really experienced with VF games; depth is an aspect of all fighting games, so people less knowledgable about VF might question it or make assumptions based on their knowledge of depth retained from other games.
Ignorance is not the same as stupidity; lighten up.
Grew up in Germany, only been living in FL for the past year. Putting that aside, driving all over the state or to another state in a desparate attempt to find someone to play VF with sounds like an incredible pain in the ass
Don’t get me wrong, I get what you’re saying about people talking out of their ass.
Then again, it’s a well known fact that VF4Evo IS a deep game. People don’t need to know the specifics to know that. It’s general knowledge; the tutorials alone are proof enough to anyone with any knowledge of fighting game mechanics. Besides, it doesn’t really matter, because either way, most people hate the game REGARDLESS of it’s depth.
You live in a particularly good area in FL where cats love fighting games. Though we do play a lot of different fighting games, unfortunately, VF4 isn’t one of the ones we’re serious about.
However, if you play the game at a high level we’d all be interested to see what a high level VF4 player looks like in person. Maybe you can inspire some peeps to take the game seriously around here – would bode well for VF5’s inevitable console release. We gather at a LAN center sometimes in your very city. If you’re interested, PM me or hit me on AIM (SynikaL 2k5) and I’ll give you more details.
If you’re ever in Miami on Thursdays, we have a group of VF players that show up at FIU’s gameroom. They’ve sort of dissolved a little for some reason, but there is some decent competition, especially two friends of mine; one of which regularly hands ass with just about the whole roster and the other one is a great Shun player.
Still wish they would hold some tournaments for this game here.
Well…in other news the music seems a good deal nicer than a lot of Evo’s generic guitar riffs. Is Akira wearing Chinese (inspired) clothing? Or is that just an Asian thing? Trying real hard not to sound dumb here. One of his hair customizations also seems to be Chinese (inspired)…Maybe…
Oh and I think a lot (perhaps all) of these dead links are at youtube.
I have to say here, I met with my friends the other weekend to play various console games and such. Among fighting games, only Guilty Gears and Soul Caliburs were familiar to most, along with one DoA fanboy (who’s quite good at GGX2#R too).
That was about the first time I tried VF4Evo against anyone since I bought it only a few days before that meeing. I personally loved the game. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t seem to be too interested in the game. The one thing they said was that the characters were unappealing (!). The best overall player of the others there loved the mechanics but didn’t really find appealing enough characters to play with. sigh Seems like the AI is the only opponent I’ll be playing against around here…
So could the main reason for people not to like VF series lie in the character design? For the fans of the VF series most characters have a decade of memories to back them up, but to newcomes they might just look… very nineties-ish.
I don’t know about any others though… this is just my case.
VF characters can seem quite dull in comparison to others in Tekken/Street Fighter/Guilty Gear. I’d be disgusted if that were the actual reason but I’m not calling it impossible. Come to think of it, the gameplay is far less outrageous than those other franchises (no fireballs, five jab juggles into wall tactics, Rock and Roll references, Boobs). What a stupid world I live in.
Of all the things I noticed…that wasn’t one of them. Slaps forehead. I have got to stop treating him like a Ryu clone.
I love VF, and would play it all the time… but you are right about it in the US. NO COMP! So I hardly play it and then when finally someone wants to play it’s like a million years since I last touched it and can’t even remember any moves. I played 3TB a lot in Japan however, but after that… just dead. I’m so mad because this game looks so good, and I would love to play it with other people, but I just don’t see it happening unfortunately. This goes for a lot of fighting games that I enjoy unfortunately. I didn’t even like tekken that much, the only reason why I played it at all is because my friends were into it. Well I genuinely like T5 and DR anyway but there is always someone to play in that.
