Sorry for the unrelated OT, but every time I see your nickname I burst into laughter.

gotta admit it’s pretty unusual finding someone that’s not italian understanding it

King of Fighters lore is very light and sparse, especially compared to something like Street Fighter. A lot has to be inferred

Rugal just seems to be a freak when it comes to physical activity and ki. As Shockdingo pointed out, Rugal is good at EVERYTHING physical. He is an absolute prodigy. Taskmaster is actually probably a pretty good comparison. This is actually why Goenitz tests Orochi blood on Rugal. Rugal is so powerful (for a human…keep in mind that Goenitz is WAY stronger) that Goenitz gives him Orochi blood to try and utilize Orochi power…and it works! The only thing that fails is Rugal’s human body.

Why can Rugal do this?

Okay for that I have to get into some conjecture based on a lot of reading…

Martial arts techniques are combat/killing techniques. It’s their nature. Rugal is a 100% naturally born total violent psychopath. In Street Fighter terms, he’s a natural born SnH-sorta guy. He believes only in killing that which gets in his way as a method to prove his own superiority. He’s a natural born killer. This innate connection to violence (a murder-prodigy basically) is often shown in martial arts materials to give the person an edge.

Rugal is “prodigy” class…like, for instance, Goku. Goku saw the Kamehameha once and then could to it despite it being a technique that took decades for Roshi to master. Rugal has that same innate understanding of ki and violence. This is also referenced in the (non-canon) KOF comics where Rugal does NOT make a good clone candidate because, though he has ludicrous potential and capability, he’s INHERENTLY uncontrollable and nuts. Any clone would just immediately start acting like Rugal unlike the Kyo clones that NESTs was able to brainwash and control. Rugal is just wired differently.

As for limits to his techniques he can steal…? In KOF, absolutely there are limits. Rugal can steal ki techniques. Kyo’s flame, for instance, is a ki technique. That is why Rugal can copy it. One shouldn’t assume it’s impossible for anyone to copy a bloodline trait like the Kusanagi flame. It’s more likely that it’s just SUPER difficult for anyone else to do and statistically unlikely for anyone else to ever do it. This is even made clear with Shingo who is training to try and copy Kyo’s flame (and his SUPER small percentage chance to trigger it in-game). Rugal is a one-in-a-billion talent, however, so the super super small percentage chance for him to ever manage to control his ki in a way to make genuine flame goes from .0000000000000001% (or whatever) to 100%.

What can’t he copy? Granted techniques. The Hakkeshu of Orochi, for instance, are empowered by the connection to Orochi they have through their Orochi blood. Orochi wields its own power of the elements as granted to it by virtue of being the “guardian of nature” and the abilities it grants are elemental powers not ki “techniques”. He could still probably create an imitation of some of their techniques like how Benimaru’s lightning attacks can be similar to Shermie’s but it would have a definitive limit to it.

It appears as he goes on Rugal tosses most of his technique-stealing, preferring to perfect/innovate his own techniques as Omega Rugal. He still has Reppuken and Kaiser Wave, but he supposedly has perfected those anyway so they’re as much his techniques as Geese and Krausers.

Keep in mind, a good chunk of what I just wrote is based on inference and speculation as well as factual stuff (I hope I’ve been clear on what is what), but I think it’s about as spot on as possible regarding Mr. Bernstein

Some of it might be speculation, but it’s quite informative nonetheless. Thank you. All of it sounds perfectly reasonable given the type of character Rugal is. Do you think he’s going to return in XV?

With the acquisition of SNK by a new company, I would FULLY expect them to do a big re(tro)branding with the next game and use the Verse storyline as a way to bring the series back to its roots like Mortal Kombat did with 9 and SNK themselves just did with SamSho

I’m expecting Rugal back in full force and am hoping for the next KOF to be a big relaunch for the series

Agree on everything
Short version is just Rugal is that good, a genius fighter
“Copy techniques” in that context is used to show that what for another (world-level talented) fighter/Master is an lifetime achievement, for him is EASY

Wich is not just a display of power/skill… it is, but mostly design his attitude
He does’nt give a fuck, he’s the arrogance, he step on all these harsh years and lives dedicated to learn that thing… he just reach out the hand and take it

Ironically the worst, to be killed by Rugal and him using your shit in battle will be the closest thing to respect he can do
Or if you’re very lucky impress him enough he turn you in a metal corpse “statue” just like some elk or boar head over a fireplace lol… you never was an opponent, but you can aim at be a tough prey/hunt trophy

Biggest irony has beem Goenitz being used to show him the food chain ladder have higher steps than him

GnG aside, I think Devil May Cry might actually be a solid crossover to try in Darkstalkers 4. Given that Dante has already appeared in McC3/I, it shouldn’t be too hard to adapt him to that game. And if you want to talk about moving units, that is a hell of a guest to have.

I do kind of love that Goentiz was just like “That’s cute and all, Mr. Bernstein but YOINK! Got your eye!” like it was nothing

EDIT:

I’ll also add for clarification regarding some KOF lore…

What impressed Goenitz was not Rugal’s strength…it was his durability as a “mere human” which is why he gave him the Orochi blood because he figured he could handle it to some extent (and Goenitz was right)

Goenitz was not trying to blind Rugal…his attack was to gouge his face off. Rugal managed to survive while just getting his eye taken out. That is what impressed Goenitz. Actually watch Goenitz’s martial arts animations. He uses eagle-claw hand motions. If you were to accurately represent what he does with his wind powers to people it’d be M-rated AF. He straight-up rips people open with his bare-hands. He’s supposed to be slashing and tearing people apart. The entire refined-gentleman cleric look of Goenitz is designed to clash with the absolute savagery of his combat style.

Wow I’m honored! Makes me glad to contribute just a bit!

The balls on that man to even pursue Goenitz despite sensing his power. I always wondered why Goenitz would be impressed about a guy surviving an attack that went for his eye, but your explanation has clarified why it was impressive.

Thought it was interesting how AASNK mentioned that Rugal had an ongoing feud with his younger brother. Maybe they could revisit that in the future.

I’d be all for that. Would love to see a younger Bernstein in the mix. Give him a radically different fighting style and make him only a little older than Adelheid so it’d be a weird Jin/Lars situation

I mostly prefer this, where he just doesn’t have the melon head.

@YagamiFire Now I’ve got a renewed appreciation for the SNK lore

I usually don’t care about fangames but the Capcom Universe one is legitimately a really good fangame. It’s basically the MVC2 roster but the Marvel side is replaced with other Capcom characters. Special mention goes to them buffing Roll and expanding the Megaman+Roll moveset. Had that come out in the early 00’s, I would’ve easily mistaken it for an actual Capcom arcade game.

I can understand what that word means from watching Italian stuff in Libya. It means “pile of shit” doesn’t it?

Depending on the context it can mean a literal piece of shit (noun) or an asshole (when used as an adjective) i.e. “this guy is an asshole”>“questo tizio è uno stronzo”.
The “lo” suffix makes it a funny term of endearment and to an italian it sounds like “little cute piece of shit” or “little asshole”

Fun thing when you think about It Is

Rugal took Heidern’s right eye
Goenitz took Rugal’s right eye

There’s ever one bigger, badder motherfucker

I wish Capcom gave that pill to Akuma long ago

Capcom made his ultimate move completely an uneffective. Remember when being hit with the raging demon meant death?
