the UK fighting game scene

chunkis you went to evo on your own? or with a crew?
Yea you say the scene is ok in the UK your wrong the scene is ok in london and thats it.
Ask anybody outside of london about a local arcade and they will laugh at you they dont exists.
You are lucky you have something going on down their even getting new machines lol.
So for me and many others the scene is dead all we got is XBL(which i dont have) or if your lucky enuff your pals play also which is the only way i get to play any1 its all very sad at atleast in usa the have a decent amount of arcades not in all in one place but i dont care bout them its here my worry is, i guess maybe it was just a phase and things will never be like that again.

From an outsider’s point of view, I think the main problem with the scene is that UK players in general just like to whine a lot about everything. Listen to chunkis, he knows what he’s talking about.

bill_rizer: Arcades are dying in the US too, it’s the same everywhere in Occident. Hell you guys are even lucky to have an arcade like Troc in London. Lots of guys here would kill for an arcade like that…

Ahh man i just made a big post but it just went poof, anyway billykane nice to see ur still alive, me and dukas wanna go to paris so lets us know when your next tournament or whatever is.

yeah bill we went evo with about 15 euros… It was great. Evo is more of a show. I hate tournaments standing around all day watching itching to play…evo was different it had this big room where you could play anything and I mean anything.

I think for me that was one of best things about it…also on the last day when the hall is turned into a cinema. But meeting all the american players made it so much fun. I would recommend you go if you have the cash you will have such a good time if you like fighting games.

you’re right about the moaning part but, aaaaaaarrrrrrggghh I haven’t played any one on 3s since the last time I went to london!

that’s funny cos you’re probably closer to it than I am!!lol

So is the area called troc or the arcade it’s self? I might get my self down there if it’s all you say it is, and if it’s not full of jerks. What time/days is there loads of SF players there? I have the money saved to go there prety any time I want. All I have to do is draw it from the bank. Plus my relatives live in london so i’ll be fine for acomidation.

The arcade is located in picadilly circus, you come out of the tube station and you can`t miss it. The building takes up most of picadilly. You can even enter the trocadero from inside the tube station.

Anyway you just walk around the trocadero until you find the vs city machines the best time to go there is a friday or saturday night anytime after 5pm is good.

Warning
In the following post I’m trying to make a case for an alternative playing venue in London, rather than the gaming scene in the UK in general. If you’re not from London, or not really interested in another venue because the Trocadero suits you fine, you might want to disregard this post*
End Warning

Obviously, if it was affordable, I would love to be able to run an arcade in central london, but unless your middle name is “loadsamoney,” it ain’t gonna happen. The troc is good, but it’s got it’s problems. It’s cramped where the fighting games are, the trocadero managment have a bad attitude, and often there are problems with the controls or sticks. Also it’s not like some of the US arcades from back in the early 90’s that had multiple machines for the Capcom games with definitive game rankings and regular tournamets. I know that you guys from the Cornertrap crew did all that, which is great, but I 'm just trying to suggest a medium that would make things easier for everyone involved. If you are going to have a big gathering of people, I feel that the troc is not ideal for many of these reasons.

What would you fellow SRK’ers want to see in an arcade? The troc and most other amusement venues in this country have too much of an emphasis on flashy games with hi-res graphics and giant and /or elaborate set ups such as Sega racing games (OutRun2, Daytona, Sega Rally) or Dancing games or novelty games. That’s why the troc guys can’t be bothered to fix an old beat up SFA3 machine, they spend too much time making sure that people aren’t messing up the driving sim games ant that those dancing pads are working correctly.

The idea I am exploring is to open somewhere that would basically be like the fighting games section in the trocadero. I’d run pretty much figting or head-to-head games only, so I’d probably have between 5-10 cabinets (all versus city, or the Taito clone version), probably running 3S, GGX#r, SFA3, ST and TTT. I’d love to be able to say I would have CFE, SF:AC and T5 there too, but those games are too expensive at the moment. I’d try and tie the machines into some sort of league and / or monthly / bi-monthly tournament. I’m looking at a venues that are next to tubes stations on the Piccadilly line. It’s not as easy to get to as the West End, but at least it’s accessible.

Chunkis, I understand totally what you are saying about players not being willing to travel, but then again you must understand that any arcade ultimatley makes most of it’s money not from people that come from far away but it’s locals. The troc is in the heart of central london, so it’s always got tourists there to fill the machines with coins, which is partly why they have so many flashy and unique games. Having a touranment to fill a place to capacity would be great, but on a day-to-day basis, you want to be near colleges, schools and areas where lots of teens with money to burn hang around, which kind of describes North London to a tee. If someone is willing to put up their own money to house a few machines, then obviously they need to see some return on it or the whole excercise is a waste of time.

To try and summarise a long post into a few sentances; would it not be cool to play in a nice venue, not run by wankers, with people who actually look after the machines, the arcade and most importantly, the players?

Desk: Well I used to go to Troc every other month last year when they still had 3s RBs… It was a 4-hour train ride everytime for me since I don’t live in the city, but it was still well worth it. I’ve even seen people fly in from Austria and Germany just to enter London tournaments! Lots of players have it much worse than the UK players so sometimes it’s a bit ridiculous to hear all the negativity.

I mean I see people complaining that there are no big tournaments in the UK, but where the hell where you last April when Absolution went down??? I think you guys outside London should just try to get together and start running small tournaments or travel to London instead of taking such an apathetic approach. Maybe try to contribute to the scene any way you can instead of complaining about it?

chunkis: Sup bro, I’ll let you know for sure, hope Dukus and you can come!

I think thats the whole point in this thread, to get somthing happening.

I understand your views but not everyone (like myself) are able to afford it. I would have loved to have gone to Absolution last year but I’m broke. As a college student and currently unemployed I can’t afford to stay in london and enter a tournament. Not yet anyway.

Snowman: That’s perfectly understandable, but then you’re really the only one to blame (not that I’ve seen you complain you before though, you seem cool).

Yeah, it’s a bitch but what can you do. Not being able to hold down a job (or get employment is another). I’ve said that wales was shitty but thats how it’s always been. And thats what I’ve grown to accept.

I would like to get together with other welsh players like deanimate but something would need to be organized. I would also like to visit london and hit the arcades. I know a friend who travels to london often so I can get travel information from him etc. As I stated with deanimate, if a tournament was organized in london, I’d try to sort out some finances and schedules to enter it.

Until that day comes, I’ll be here. Playing and practising

Whoa this thread completely blew up in my absence… I’d go with the constructicons but i do have a semi-mint Abominus in my bedroom right now…

The place I was on about was Picadill; NOT Namco Station FYI

Maybe a communal trip down south is in order??? I’ve been mouthing about this for ages on various forums and to various peeps and I’ve shown little commitment to it. I’m completely brassic at the mo, but it’s do-able within 6 weeks-2months. Considering the size of the country its hardly THAT much of an ordeal, is it?

Like i have said before, arcade gaming now doesn’t seem to exist outside of London. I must have playes about 25+ different people at CvsS2 in Picadilly and only one of them was any good. Now i’m not claiming to be the best but, damn, some of the shit I see is bad. No RC (no matter much how I hate it) people spamming rolls all day and only two of these guys didn’t use C-Groove…

Well, rant over. It is nice to see a UK thread that doesn’t dissapear after 2 days though…

Yeah snowman I know a guy called EX_MOST he lives in wales and is mad into his fighting games and am sure you guys could meet up or something.

Yeah I’ve seen two, deanimate & ex_mosquito (I believe that’s his username) and they are usually in #cornertrap. I rarely visit because I don’t like to intrude on the conversations in there since I pretty much don’t know anyone in there.

Patester : How come everyone has an Abominus? I wish I could remember him, but I’m rewatching Season 3 & 4 so I’m bound to see him. Already had Predaking <3

Anyway the street fighter and tekken ranking battles are going to start up again soon, so things should start to look up. I don`t have any news on when the next big tournament will be, but i would say it will be the tekken 5 world tournmament.

There is also a bunch of old skool players who are starting up and new site with some fresh ideas and are looking to run some tournaments…so look out for that.

steady.we all want the same thing.this thread is full of people who want to help make stuff happen in the uk,myself included.

It’s always like that on the forums, but almost none of them actually show up to the tournaments or do anything constructive for the scene in real life…

dude you dont live here, have you ever been to birmingham newcastle or wales? im pretty sure you anit and your going to sit their and tell me you really know whats going on lol yea ok watever.
your just showing the same as the whole world when it comes to the uk weather its sports or games etc people only think of london fair enuff its the capital but its not the only place that exist in england.
As for abs were was everone? hmm dunno maybe not every SF player uses SRK or the net so how would they know? hands up those who saw a add in their arcade oh wait a mintue…
Also i can clearly see your french with that attuidue i dont like it you come on here disin people for moaning and bitching about not having tourneys and not doing jack about it wait let me see is jericho doing nothing? hmm what about that cornertrap dude hell even i and my m8s have idea we want to try.
point is people are trying to do something did you read the title of the thread oh well perhaps not since you have been blessed why dont you come and help us non-londoners out.

apathetic approach :annoy:

ok im sorry for ranting everone i dont want to turn this thread into a childlish flame of words, but this guy just pissed me off at what he said and now ya know. :badboy:
