Hey Phaethon, I’ll play you at GGXX randomly. I don’t know if I’ve seen you around. I’m the Testament user. Are there any arcades near Torrance that have GGXX? I live about 5 minutes from there.
Yeah, you know me. You hate my dolphins. :bgrin: So much for hiding from you.
Regency Fun Center (uses tokens) is in Long Beach, on Carson St, on the north edge of the LB airport (Spring St exit on I-405, if you know the freeways). It’s the closest GG machine I’ve seen yet, but the machine has screwy video (you know UCLA’s MvC2 machine’s “streaky” video? Multiply it by like 2 or 3. Then add a strong dark-to-bright gradient across the screen. That’s RFC’s GGXX).
The only other place I know with a good GG machine is Camelot Golfland (uses tokens), with GGXX and maybe GGI, all the way out there in Anaheim.
I’m still looking for a machine closer to home. If the situation gets really bad, I could get a multi-tap PS2-USB converter and put MS-Windows back on my laptop :shake:. I may wind up doing that next quarter if X-Cape fails to bring in #R :crybaby:.
Whee! I’ma come by randomly for the next week or so, depending on if stuff works. :^) Maybe 1-3?

Hey PhaethonH, thanks for the crazy detailed info… I’m sure it’ll come handy when I head out there…
Hey PhaethonH,
I also live really close to the Torrance area, and I’ll be heading back there after this semester. (graduating) I’m looking for places to play Marvel that are closer than UCLA. I’ve heard of this one place, 8ball? Do you know of any others?
Also, are there any marvel tournies at UCLA? My sis goes there, so I’ll probably be around to play a few games.
The “big” tournies that used to be held at UCLA (including one of the Evo’s, the tips and tricks tourney where d.lee beat jwong, and other miscellaneous) are long gone. Since then, I’ve thrown one tourney, which had a crappy turnout of 6 ppl or so…
UCLA is a lunch hour marvel place now… as students, we don’t really like to come after we’re done with our shit on campus.
Some of the guys here are decent… and i’ll be around to try to hold it down again next quarter…
There’s a vidgame store on the corner of Sepulveda and Crenshaw, “Hyper Games”, which has a mvc2 machine (uses quarters) inside, as well as a vintage NeoGeo. No idea about the playing community.
In Alpine Village, next to the batting cages, in the trailer (“mobile office”) is a small arcade with MvC2 (uses quarters), maybe two of them (I was looking for SSV at the time). Again, no idea how active the locals are.
8-ball is a game store, vid and card. It’s on the corner of Anza and Del Amo, near West High, right next to the 7-11. It has MvC2 and CvS2 (quarters), and that’s it. Their sign says they have another location near South High (at 2839 PCH), which I haven’t checked out, yet.
My gut feelings say there’s at least one Marvel machine within spitting distance of each of the other high schools. My gut hunch also says there may be “hidden” Marvel machines around the ElCo CC and CSUDH. I think CSUDH may have MvC2 on-campus, but I’m not sure (looking for SSV at the time).
The Mulligan’s down here is utterly worthless for versus games. The ONLY fighter game they have is Tekken5 (3 tokens). This, Pac-Man/Galaga, and some overhead airplane game are their only stick-and-button vidgames. They even got rid of their Ultracade. The other games are driving/vehicle, dancing, or lightgun.
I can no longer find Aladdin’s Castle in the mall. Their location next to McD’s is closed and empty, but people keep referring to the arcade in the present tense even after I visited their closed shop in early summer 2004. If they moved, I don’t know where they are now.
There’s Malibu Castle (uses tokens) near the Rosecrans exit of the I-405; I don’t know the address off-hand but I can point to it on a map (I pass by it on my strange return route from Fry’s Manhattan Beach). It has a heftier arcade than Mulligan’s, but the one time I had time to scope it out was on a free-play day and I wasn’t in the mood to kill ALL day there. I could hear the sounds from their Time Crisis 3 machine (I know that blasted game by heart from start to end), so the probability of their having MvC2 is high.
There’s Boomer’s (uses tokens) halfway to CSULB from Torrance along the I-405. Another place where I don’t know address but can point to on a map. It has two of them Capcom’s versus games (at least one MvC2); I forget if the other was another MvC2, a MvC1, or a XMvSF (I was looking for SSV at the time).
Regency Fun Center (uses tokens) is another Long Beach arcade with MvC2 on a super large screen… so huge the control panel is connected by rails or whatever to the screen. I’ve mentioned RFC in an earlier post in this thread.
The Redondo Beach Pier/Boardwalk arcade might have MvC2. The last time I visited them was in Mar 2004, and they had SFA3, 3S, and the original-vintage Pong machine.
I don’t think a marvel tourney’s been held at UCLA for several months, if not years. I don’t even follow mvc2 that much. Only two things keep me interested in even watching mvc2: Servbot (on active duty or w/ T.Bonne) and Mike_Z’s Juggernaut.
Seems you’ve had just about as much luck as me. Del Amo closed their arcade years ago, Mulligan’s sucks, CSUDH had a flood so everything in their basement got wiped out (why MvC2 was in the basement and not in the gameroom, I know not, but my high school was on CSUDH campus), I’ve been to 8-ball once and that place isn’t great for competition (though it might be possible to bring a PS2 and play GGXX), and that’s about it for really close places.
Goddamn, seems like everywhere is dead that is closeby and not named Family Fun or Regency. But since there’s always active comp. there, I may just decide to do the 30 min. drive.
It seems like 8ball and Hyper Gaming are the closest, so I may check them out to see what the competition is like. But I doubt there will be anyone besides highschool students. = (
Aladdin’s: I heard it got shutdown, wasn’t generating a profit, been dead for a few years now.
ElCo: Seems to be a Marvel machine located nearby campus. Store called… Geofeory? Not sure. Spelling looks wrong too.
Bleh, thanks for the informative post though. ^^
Mad Tea: Did you go to that one Math/Sci Tech school… what was it called. CAMUS or something?
Liqu1dBluE: Yeah, I went to a high school called CAMS.
I almost went there. I was qualified, but decided not to go for reasons I no longer remember. I remember they couldn’t stop stuffing my mailbox back in middle school. And a couple unis offered me early entrance in HS (skip grades 11 and 12), which I passed over for reasons I can’t remember nor understand. Then I went to UCLA and turned into a slobbering mess of a moron (vidgames had nothing to do with it… I think…).
RE: Aladdin’s; not surprised they weren’t getting profits – at one time near the end of their life, I saw nothing but Namco games and enough empty floorspace in there to play Ultimate Frisbee. What I’m confused about is the approximate date of their closing (month+year).
ObNostalgia: I remember the days when Aladdin’s had that head-to-head NeoGeo pair, with KOF96, SamSho3, RBFFS, and NeoBomberman, through the years.
RE: ElCo; probably Geoffrey’s, the comic book store, off the campus’s east border. Would sound right for a comics joint to have… mvc2…
RE: FFA; it might help to plan carpool parties. Split gas cost, use the carpool lane until it inexplicably disappears at LAX, and have someone in the car to keep you awake as you drive back at 3:30 in the morning :wgrin:.
I’ve driven a carpool out to Camelot Golfland in Anaheim (45 min along the 91) twice. Although three of the four times I traveled there things went smoothly, the locals complain about poor machine condition. Oh, and the GGXX players show up less often, probably because of the US console release of GGXX#R a few months back, so I’m less apt to head out there these days. Well, they do have Fry’s (of Anaheim) next door, so it wouldn’t be a complete loss… hrm…
