The Superman Thread: PREACH IT, goody!

Eeexcellent. fingertips together

EDIT:

This interview is good, and even better that it’s only a fraction of the whole thing. Morrison really does understand Superman, in a way that I think very few people do.

On the other hand, the thought of Jim Lee doing ASS instead of Frank Quitely is something I’d rather not consider.

I heard the last run on Action Comics with Brainiac was worth picking up.

Of course, I’d like to first look to my SRK brethren to confirm this for me first before I shell out my bucks for it. Especially considering the usual risk involved for non-All-Star Superman monthlies.

How has Geoff Johns’ run been so far? Is this legitimately good?

Brainiac arc is IMO the best Supes story written in years after ASS so yeah its realy good
for myself i realy like johns run so far (well i started from LOSH arc)

I’m skeptical of any non-All-Star Superman DC universe comic produced in the last four years. I honestly think you should just put it off until the day you can find it in the 50% off bargain TPB bin at a convention, flea market, or garage sale. Instead, I recommend you spend your money on obscure and pretentious indie comics.

Sure, it’s Geoff Johns, but I haven’t read anything good from him since before Identity Crisis. Everyone seems to like his Green Lantern but if you ask me, that shit ain’t obscure nor pretentious enough. It’s just a straight-up, no frills superhero story with generic superhero art. The Sinestro Corps War, to steal a quote from Randy Moss, “was a tragedy, but it really wasn’t nothing big.”

I can’t believe you, Clinty, of all Canadians would even have to ask about this. What’s next? Are you gonna ask Painy if the Daniel Way Deadpool is worth reading? Are you gonna ask Appy-Inc if Big Hero 6 is a good comic?

Go home and be a family man.

We’re pretty fortunate to live in the era of “living history,” as Frank Miller put it. Unlike decades past, we currently have easy access to comics going all the way back to the inception of the medium as we know it today. With such an embarrassment of riches, I don’t feel any particular compulsion to keep up with current comics. It’s no longer a necessity, and I can’t think of any other reason to do so.

In other words, fuck it. Do what I’m planning on doing and continue to fill your collections with trades and omnibuses of classic comics. We have our pick of the gems from any era we choose and we no longer have to be content with what’s on the spinner racks at the moment.

Showcase Presents: Superman, Vol. 4 is either out now or is coming out soon, and it’s looking pretty damn good to me. This is the time period that I see reflected most strongly in ASS. Though the art and storytelling style is very much a product of the times (in other words, cartoonish), it’s the ideas and the characterization that make the stories compelling.

Preach it, goody, PREACH IT

The Braniac story that was in Action Comics is among the best Superman stories I’ve read, you should really consider reading it if not purchase it.
Good dialog (see my sig), good art and good action.
Plus its a prequel to the New Krypton arc.

Goody any word on when the Brainiac TPB’s gonna come out?

Morrison interview part 2 -

He makes ASS jokes towards the very end HAW HAW HAW!

Morrison Interview part 3 -

“You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Sano again.”

Jeez, how many people do I have to rep before I can rep the people I actually want to rep again?

REP.

Superman tier:
Rucka > Busiek > Johns

Funny I tried to rep you just now and I got the same thing. Was finally able to rep Zephyranthes again and I’ve been trying for months… :wasted:

Though yeah it’s always interesting to hear what Morrison has to say. The man is brilliant! I have to go read ASS again…

I cant read the interview until the second trade comes out, which I will buy even though I know (pray) that an Absolute edition is forthcoming.

Yeah lots of spoilers… I hope they eventually collect ASS in a 12 issue trade for easy reference.

Part 4 -

IMO The Super-titles since late 2003 have been of excellent quality (with the exception of Chuck Austen’s Action comics run) The ruin arc, Sacrifice were not marketed very well (poorly i might add) but it beats out the other more hyped comics of that time (Sins past, The Other)

Camelot falls is also good, so is The Legion arc as is most of Buseik’s run (except for that collector arc in action which sucked arse)

Part 5 of the Morrison interview -

SH***TTT Showcase Presents Superman volume 4 is out already ?? for how long I recently got number three and it’s classic silver age full-o-shit… ,load of DAMN good stories (if you can get opast their hokiness of course)

I’d fucking drop the New Krypton Arc just to scrap bucks to get this one out.

BTW correction on one of your statements there, Silver Age Superman has ZERO characterization (but hey that’s not a bad thing) it’s superman and superman has always been without character.

Part 6 -

Rugy, I think there’s a difference between “characterization” and “character development.” Silver Age Superman stories didn’t have much in the way of character development (especially compared to modern sophisticated storytelling) but they were consistent and accurate in representing Superman’s character traits.

I don’t know how you can say that Superman doesn’t have any character, and how you can say that’s even a good thing.
