I just read it twice. It’s terrific and I’m not even slightly disappointed… with the comic itself.
My problem with this is that I’ve been nursing an idea for an “end of days” type Superman book in my head for years now, and much of what’s in this issue is exactly the kind of stuff I’ve wanted to write. Damn you, Grant Morrison… damn you to hell for beating me to it.
All Star Superman 1-12 is the 2001: A Space Odyssey of superhero comics.
WOW just WOW All star Superman 12 was a fucking greater than great finale
I like how everything came together in the end in a true morrison way
If dc are smart they should drop the title now so no other writer will touch it
and lets not forget Action Comics #869 that also deliverd the goods, Goody you should realy give the Brainiac arc a try you won’t be disappointed
You have to roll back a few decades to get to Superman in his prime. The last time Superman was as good as he is in ASS is the few issues Alan Moore wrote in the 1980s, and before that, probably the stuff done during the Weisinger administration.
It has nothing to do with the passage of time, the change in cultural climate, or any of that shit. Superman is a timeless character and there is nothing fundamentally wrong with him (ASS proves this, if nothing else). The problem lies with the people working on the books, and to an extent, the storytelling trends that they enforce. It’s not hard to write a decent Superman story, provided you’re barking up the right tree.
Awesome, bub. Me, I’m waiting for ASS to be released as an ABSOLUTE, BABY.
Ladies and gentlemen (well, gentlemen), o.zoolandy has spoken. I guess there’s no point in reading any other Superbook. Sano, please close and lock this thread seeing as how there is no further point in any discussion now that ASS #12 has been unleashed unto the world. Hell, you might as well close the entire Internet at this point.
I’ll probably pick that up, too. Quitely’s art is good, but I’m just as fascinated by Jamie Grant’s shit. Dude must take a fuckload of stimulants to do all that precise coloring and stuff with the digital inking, and I want a closer look.
Hell no. Even though ASS is closed for business, I still need a place to bitch about how all the remaining Superman teams have their heads up their asses and how everything was better when my dad was in grade school.
I think we should have a day where we all just bitch about how shitty the '80s and '90s were to Superman. Those were dark days… I guess it’s still pretty dim right now, but it’s not as bad.
A couple nights ago, I just read Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography by James D. Hudnall with art by Eduardo Barretto. (One of the Kubert brothers colored it beautifully, but I forget if it was Andy or Adam, and I’m too lazy to check right now.) It’s a prestige-format one-shot from like 1989 or so. I thought it was excellent, actually.
It’s about a journalist who’s writing an biography about Luthor, and over the course of his research he digs up some real dirt and eventually gets murdered. Somehow, Clark Kent was the last person to see this journalist alive, so he is a prime suspect. Pretty simple premise but it’s very well-executed for an '80s comic. I think it holds up pretty well today. No idea if the events depicted regarding Luthor’s origins are still “in continuity” but who gives a damn? The story does a great job of showing Luthor at his malicious and malevolent best.
I could kind of imagine this story, at the time it was released, to sort of serve as a companion piece to The Killing Joke. Both stories are prestige-format one-shots that delve into the histories and psyches of the most iconic DC supervillains. Kind of a shame that The Unauthorized Biography isn’t held up in the same regard, or else I probably would have read it a lot sooner.
Actually, I take that back. I did read Roger Stern’s novelization of the Death and Life when it came out. It was slightly preferable to reading the actual comics, which is like saying getting punched in the gut is preferable to getting punched in the balls.
New Krypton should be out next week im realy hyped for it
I hope that Johns will deliver like he did with SCW and with the way things are right now in AC with the superb Brainac arc this event will be memorable
