Couldn’t afford it so I took the last copy my store had to the counter and had it placed on hold for me! :woot:
Big news for Superman:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/29/business/media/29comics.html?_r=1&ref=arts&oref=slogin
I don’t want to alarm anyone, but I’ve just revisited All Star Superman #10, and I am perilously close to declaring it the greatest single issue of Superman I have ever read. No joke.
It’s way too early to say so, so I will reserve judgment, but I can only think of a handful of issues that evoke this kind of reaction in me. It’s nothing short of sublime.
Question - The Kryptonian writing in ASS #10, was that adopted from Smallville or did that just exist in comics prior to Smallville? The use of symbols was very similar and they even used the diamond with the eight in the center that Smallville uses all of the time.
The font was created by DC. I am pretty sure it predates Smallville by at least a year or two, though I can’t recall any comic appearances.
Ah okay. Thanks!
Or maybe we are just stubborn enough to refuse to give Jeph Loeb any credit for anything. Because he surely deserves none.
Well, Loeb could have designed the font himself out of ramen and Spaghetti-O’s for all I care, but it was designed prior to Smallville. It might have been designed with Smallville in mind–I don’t know–but I suspect it’s merely an attempt by DC to set some standards for the portrayal of Kryptonian culture, much like back in the Weisinger days.
goody…
Weren’t Kryptonian Alphabet Present even in the old Wayne Boring Days Pre-Crisis??
Sort of. Though Kryptonian lettering was presented at various times in the old days, it was very inconsistent. The closest I can think of to an early standard alphabet was in the 60s, but obviously that was eventually revised out of existence–and though the style of the lettering seemed uniform, I’m not sure they took the time to work it up into a fully fledged simulated alphabet.
The standard Kryptonian alphabet as it is today, the one we’re discussing, is a fairly recent invention.
I plan to post a blog here soon entitled…
The ONLY credible supes villains
I only have THREE on my list
Lex Luthor
General Zod
Braniac
The rest (Joke)
Metallo
Bizarro (although bordering on being a joke and a threat)
Parasite
Toyman
Prankster
Terra man
are mostly in that category where I can see supes disabling them in a few seconds using NON-LETHAL means…
Plus it’s a shame really that Doctor Octopus for example can definetely ony one of these superman Joke-villains (maybe except bizarro, but he can be easily outwitted)
I’ll finish my blog later
I bought Vol. 1 of All-Star Superman, does that warrant me a free One Year Premium Subscription on the Forums?
No, but it does warrant you some of the best damn reading that comics has to offer.
g00dy since you seem to know more about supes than I do.
What’s the Origin of the Post-Crisis Bottle city of Kandor? OI do know that it (The Pre-C) was eventually enlarged at the end of the 70’s…
it couldn’t have been Braniac since the Post-Crisis Braniac was just Milton Fine a Gypsy being possessed by Vril Dox?
My friends have argued that Superman Killing off the Phantom Zone Kryptonians is now retconned out of continuity… is this true.
I actually don’t know a whole lot about what’s been happening in Supes for the last decade or so, so I’m probably not the best guy to ask. Last I knew, the post-Crisis Kandor was a Kandor-in-name-only, created by an alien being to imprison members of various species of people (which obviously fits into the post-Crisis philosophy of streamlining things and making them more logical, right?).
Given DC’s recent habit of swapping different pre-Crisis elements in and out of continuity like a switchboard, I couldn’t begin to follow Kandor up to where it is today.
Besides All-Star Supes, is any other Super book worth checking out?
Currently? Not that I’m aware of. But I’d say that about mainstream comics in general.
The Superman: Redemption trade got good reviews, but I’m not sure if i should get it.
DC seem to have made Superman low profile this decade, with weak stories and what not. Has there been any recent stories that rivals Superman Rex, or Power Surge, or Superman Hunter/Prey? He’s supposed to be the icon, the one who steals others’ spotlights and stuff. Sure, he had a significant role in Infinite Crisis, but before and after that, nothing much has happened.
Sinestro Corps War
Spoiler
For example, he should’ve duked it out with SMP, or at least helped Sodam Yat. Instead he jobbed to Cyborg Superman, then, for the duration of that story arc, blended in with the B- and C-list heroes, battling the Sinestro Corps. Then, he teamed up with Supergirl and Powergirl for a few panels, trying to defeat SMP to no avail.
Superman: Birthright was kickass one of my fav. Supes books ATM.
I really liked Lex’s background in this series and how he wanted to degrade Supes, plus Lu’s art was amazing in this one.
All Star Superman #11 is due a week from today.
As usual, take that with a whole shaker of salt.
