The Super Mario Maker thread - March 9th Update: Keys Finally Found

Considering I’m the only one thus far to beat it I see why that name was given. Shit gave me true controller finger workout memories, even after finding Fire Mario…

About to make more stages now, love how I can watch my Cubbies on TV but still play games on my Gamepad simultaneously. Next-gen, what quotation marks?

Tell me about it. I almost had to smack my brother as he was laughing at me while I kept dying. Finally got it though, and it’s a pretty fun level.

Guys, sorry I’ve been slacking. I thought I’d have a bunch of time to get on some levels with the gf out of town for work. Turns out I had to go too. So here I am in Moab, in a tent, in the rain, posting on SRK with my phone. I’ve been keeping tabs and can’t wait to play the new shit when I get back next week. And I’ve got some cool level ideas to contribute to the thread.

I’ve been playing a lot of Splatoon, I just started Yoshi’s Wooly World and I got Smash going, but Super Mario Maker is still in my rotation. Been working on some new courses and playing some that others have made.

The really, REALLY ball-busting, controller throwing, rage quite, stupidly hard courses are pretty popular in this game, especially those made my YouTube personalities. I enjoy watching others suffer on these stages but they aren’t the kinda of levels I enjoy making. There are creators making well designed, traditional Mario levels but it seems like they are getting overshadowed by desires to make the next Kaizo Mario.

@LordWilliam1234, good job clearing some of the tougher levels I’ve made. You clearly show more experience with 2D Mario games than plenty of others. You made great use of Mario’s twirl in Jump Man and you aced Jump Man 2. It was fun to see somebody playing levels that I made.

Finally got 50 stars. Now I can upload more levels.

WELL I’LL BE SPAMMED
E730-0000-00B0-E241

Basically a stage I decided to save while straight spamming during unlocking. Am I 6 again?

I’m done being One
9476-0000-00B1-E4AF

Yeahhhhh… y’all gonna hate this one. Try to make it to ‘‘2’’ in less than 30 tries. I thought about reducing the time some more but I have more devious plans with timers

Update to the OP needed. New version of the Water Temple that fixes an exploit I found:

Also updated my original post accordingly.

And now for the final set of SRK levels.

https://youtu.be/h2Q1je_is3w

This one features:

@“The Martian”'s RUN. LIKE. HELL., Escape from Goomba Mountain, Ruins of the Demon and Bowser’s Sky Pursuit courses.

@“Zebster”'s Storm Bowser’s Fleet!, Wario Land: Rice Beach 1, Wario Land: Rice Beach 2, Wario Land: Rice Beach 3, Wario Land: Rice Beach 4, Wario Land: Rice Beach 5: Final, and Ninja Gaiden 1-1 (NES) courses.

…it’s funny you say that because I probably have the least experience. Never having beaten the original SMB or SMB3, never played Lost Levels, I think I only recently beat Super Mario World. I did beat NSMB/NSMB Wii/NSMB 2 but those aren’t all that hard, and even in that case I never bothered trying to 100% them so I didn’t play all of the levels in those games.

(Ah. So I was correct both in thinking you had only one more video at present and in vaguely remembering you saying you hadn’t ever played all that many Mario [platformer] games. Good to know.)

Anyway, T20thoughts already added your course change and both of Autocrat1’s two new stages, so all I had to add was your latest video and the front page is now as up to date as it’s going to get right now. I doubt it will change for a while to be honest unless Roknin posts something tomorrow. Shame I don’t have this game (or a Wii U) given all the free time I currently (still) have, but I doubt that will change anytime given everything, so no point in moaning about it.

Expert Mode is honestly as balanced as AE Yun. I’m not sure how people have fun making such henious and morbid stages. And yes, if the title is something like LOL EASY, prepare to be ass raped.

Part 1 of insanity:

Part 2:

Yes, precognition is a skill one must have for expert mode.

I think the farthest I’ve gotten to is stage 11 on Expert. I don’t know if I have the patience to get through to the end. Even with the ability to skip courses.

I feel like I’ve said this before, but…I thought Roller Coaster Tycoon was bad in bringing out the sadistic tendencies in people. This just takes it to a whole other level.

While I haven’t played a LOT of Mario Maker lately, when I’ve done 100-Mario I’ve done Expert. I just skip at the first sign of douchebaggery.

Spamming the first screen with enemies? Skip.

Hit an invisible block that sent me into a pit because lolkaizo? Skip.

Underwater spike maze or starting the stage with a basic walljump challenge over spikes as small Mario? Skip.

Offscreen Thwomp? Skip.

Instakilled by enemy at the start of the level? Skip.

Door or pipe leads to instadeath? You get the picture.

I usually wind up skipping about half to 2/3 of the levels. But each skip takes so much less time and frustration than going at bad levels again, and the GOOD levels are so worth it.

Earlier I played 3 stages in a row (via skippage) with these two exact perimeters. Wouldn’t be surprised if courses had EVERY one of these things tho. I still haven’t beaten @Davidstar’s Crappy Bird, lol real Flappy Bird is way easier

I wonder if some bastard made a course with the usual, innocent Rube Goldberg effect but with hell at the end. Like ‘a million Hammer Bros. in clouds about to perform a fly-by on small Mario’ hell…

One thing for sure though, expert mode has definitely made me question on my level making abilities. Levels, in my opinion, shouldn’t make you have to guess right at the checkpoint sign if you’ve just navigated a tough stage. They shouldn’t start with some prior knowledge needed in order to progress further. And they certainly shouldn’t have enemies that are invisible to see when going through a blind spot. All in all, I feel like people saw Kazio Mario and decided to make something less fun and more sadistic than the aforementioned.

Yeah, Super Mario Maker has shown that there are THRONGS of sadists out there. There’s fun hard and then there’s BS hard and lots of creators are going the later route. I haven’t even tried expert mode but the things I’ve seen and heard make me question if I should take it for a spin. Even the hardest levels designed by Nintendo in the Super Mario games don’t conform to the a-holery so many creators in Super Mario Maker do. I’ve got some hard courses in mind but rest assured, they won’t be that Kazio Mario garbage mucking up expert mode.

Anyhoo, I’ve uploaded my next course.

Airship Fleet
57DA-0000-00B6-0A38

I’ve always thought that Airship levels were one of Super Mario Bros. 3’s greatest aspects, so the first Airship themed level I designed is of course, uses the SMB3 set. I played through this level and made edits to it several times over, removing some obstacles that I felt were too much. There are three areas in the level you can head to to get some protection for Mario’s noggin.

How do you make enemies wear shells? I’m pretty sure I saw a level in expert mode which had enemies wear shells and the like.

Sorry for the huge delay on these, was on vacation this past weekend and I’m starting to catch up to my own schedule, lol…

Two vids!

Oh man, does it ever. I have an Expert mode attempt that I’ll be uploading either for tomorrow or Friday’s vid. I didn’t get past the first level on any of them.

Some of these folks are just… demented.

That bolded is the crux of good level design, and why a LOT of people would not make it as level designers but are perfect for online troll levels.

Like, for example, Lost Levels. Later levels in that game have some really difficult challenges, but they are designed to build on what the game has taught you, and in most places give you a fair idea of what to expect just from how the level is structured.

Many of these super-hard levels start off like a Yu_gi-Oh anime battle full of only ridiculous trap cards.

Sounds about right…

Am I still the only one who’s beaten Davidstar’s levels?

C’mon, step it up!

I haven’t watched your entire latest video, Roknin, so I’m not sure if you realized this already. But there’s something a LOT of people don’t seem to realize about conveyors:

YOU CAN RUN ON THEM. Even with Yoshi.

Jumping constantly just makes you go slower. If you just run, though, you build up speed which will, after a second or two, get you to go faster than the conveyor.

I had this realization while designing my second stage in Mario Maker, and actually nerfed a hazard because I realized people might panic and die because they don’t know it.

Is that a challenge?

Eh, I’ll get to it eventually.
