The Super Mario Maker thread - March 9th Update: Keys Finally Found

(Done, though that’s because T20thoughts already updated it.)

I did update the first page with a link to that object limitation video that Zebster just posted, however, given it wasn’t posted in here before and it is rather informative. Not much else has changed with the first post currently, save for making it clearer when a link within parentheses is separate from link of the sentence before it.

yeah the first one i felt was wonky and difficult but i decided to post it anyone.
i was actually slightly more proud of and enjoyed making shenanigans.
crappy bird was just a level i made cause i thought it would be funny.

yeah the ending of shenanigans XD

Got another one in my “Hyrule” series.

“Hyrule 2”

3962-0000-0072-32FC

This time representing L7-P8.

Can you get all 50 coins?

Really felt like doing another level recreation so here you go:
Wario Land: Rice Beach 1
5BEF-0000-0072-58A5

Had to adjust the layout very slightly (move certain blocks up one so they’re 3 tiles above the ground instead of 2), and filled in 1 tile gaps in certain areas. Ended up using Super Mario World as the course layout because it’s the closest to Wario Land’s play style. I didn’t go with NSMB because of wall jumping.

Do you think it works well?

Hats off to Nintendo’s genius. I got SO FUCKING ANNOYED watching people’s ineptitude when playing this game that I went out and bought a Mario Maker bundle so I can play the levels myself.

So… should Nintendo even bother releasing another 2D Super Mario? I mean, with Super Mario Maker. We have a 2D Super Mario that never ends. Whether I’m crafting my own levels or playing through some other maker’s levels, the game is crazy fun.

I hate to say it, but I think there are a ton of players out there that suck at 2D Mario games. I played one level the other day and saw a comment that said the level needed work because it was too hard. I died playing the level several times but I made it through. Some jumps were tricky due to enemy placement but it was certainly doable. I think a lot of players lack patience or don’t know when to exercise restraint. True there are a lot of BS levels out on SMM but there are a lot of good ones that cannot be rushed through. Its

I wish I could show you give out the course IDs to the courses I’ve found while playing the game because there are some really good level designers out there. I suppose Nintendo has gone it the way they have to prevent others from taking credit for making courses, but it does kind of limit things.

I think Super Mario Bros. 3 has my favorite style of Ghosts Houses. Its strange I’ve always hated Ghost House levels but I didn’t mind them in Super Mario 3D World and the set used in SMB3 has me itching to take a crack at a level with that theme.

What do you mean? You can go into your list of starred or played courses, and if you tap on the “ID” thing on each course, you get the number.

People just don’t have patience. I often see on new courses I put up people who only take like one or three tries and then just give up. Even on my Hyrule 1 level (which aside from finding 100 coins, is very easy) I see people who play it like 2-3 times and then just quit. People would rather skip to a course they can just breeze through than one that takes a bit of platforming to get through, I guess.

And I thought I was terrible at Mario…

On that note, I’ve started making vids of my 100 Mario challenges. Just Normal difficulty so far. Will probably make ones of me playing through the courses in this thread in the future.

(Thanks for updating the first post, T20thoughts.)

I was going to do it yesterday after I saw LordWilliam1234 and Zebster, but I fell asleep rather abruptly after being up for more than 24 hours and had other things concerning (and disorienting) me before that. Good times.

I have to agree. This would currently be the selling point of the game for me if I actually had the Wii U (or the money to buy one) myself.

You assume that they were going to release another 2D Super Mario game (on the Wii U) though. Given the transition to 3D has been made even on handhelds (correct?) at this point, that already seemed rather unlikely outside of maybe remakes, at least to me. With that, this game just makes it even more unlikely for the reasons you point out.

That third stage was easily the best. Do you have the ID for it given you starred it?

Beyond that, good job even if about half of the levels were still supremely easy. As much as I expected the flow of stages to be all downhill after stage 3, which they largely still were, none of them were outright unfair or bad save for stage 11. I am surprised, however, that the course set-up “let” an automatic stage be the last level. Huh.

2D Mario had traditionally sold better than their 3D counterparts. They probably won’t need to make another 2D mario for the Wii U but I wouldn’t put it past them to put out another 2D mario on their next home console at some point.

Thinking about it though they could do something like a SMM2 for the next home console and release the stages that they’d do along with the maker in one package. Wishful thinking though…I’m sure they won’t do something like that.

“Escape the Room”

2AC5-0000-0050-5FE9

Think I’ll work on finishing off my “Hyrule” series this week and then get to work on more “Temple” stages. Forest Temple remains my most popular one at the moment so go with what works and all that.

…bleh, you need 50 stars to be able to upload 20 levels? Guess I won’t be getting that anytime soon…

Go with nostalgia if you want easy stars. Or an automatic level, those always get huge numbers. Or get a streamer to play one of your levels.

Huh. Didn’t know you could do that. Thanks for the much needed info.

I tried remaking level 4-1 of Super Mario Land. The level’s longer than I remember it, but looking at the entire OG map, portions of it were copy/pasted. I’ll probably cut out the copied parts to save space.

(Okay, thanks LordWilliam1234. I’ve added the idea for “Escape the Room” to the first page.)

If anyone (still) cares (or ever cared), then The Game Grumps (read: Aaron) still haven’t beaten Ross’s “Companion Spring” level as of their latest update on it, though yet another one may be forthcoming as of today. I’m not really sure and don’t really care–merely posting it since the video before this was posted a page or two ago:

(Sigh. Why do I always make a typo or omit something?)

Well, yes, 2D Mario games have traditionally sold better than their 3D counterparts because “traditionally” the Mario franchise started out in 2D. Unless your counting all of the spin-offs including stuff like Mario Kart and Mario Party, then the number of 2D Mario games still greatly outpaces the 3D Mario games even if 3D Mario games have been around since Super Mario 64.

I suppose I should have specified that I meant for the Wii U, however, which is my fault. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if Mario Maker’s release marked the end of 2D Mario games that use graphics up to NSMB’s graphics level. We’ll see though.

Currently working on ‘Dropping the Hammer’. May or may not be done before the end of the night. Trying to make a challenging but balanced level with minimal BS sort of similar to my ghost house in the style of SMW.

The next one of my “Hyrule” levels is up.

“Hyrule 3”

F68F-0000-0078-51B2

No coin quest this time. Just get through it alive.

Well, I suppose I could start re-creating NSMB levels and see how that goes.

“NSMB 1-1”

3AC5-0000-0078-75D9

Had to cut it a tad short since it hit the max length that a course allows, and of course there’s no slopes, but I tried to be as faithful as possible, limitations aside.

New level, Mario Land 4-1: 49E8-0000-0078-B4E2

It’s not a 1:1 recreation of the level due to the original level being too long, and much of the level was a copy/paste job. Both sub areas in the OG level were exactly the same, so I changed one of them to be like one of the other sub areas in the game. Seeing the level in its entirety made me realize how boring it was design-wise.

Finished the first world of Wario Land.

Hammer Bros are dicks…This stage should be challenging with minimal bullshit (it’s still there 1 area you shouldn’t even stay in if you happen upon it for obvious reasons and the second…well…) and I made it so that it should be passable by most. Also there are a couple hidden things that can make the challenge less if you look for them.
