The Super Guy Match-Up Thread: Check First Posts! (Updated: 01-24-2011)

All Rog has to do is block cr.mk and he’s at even frames with you. I know it’s useful against the reversal happy types, but it won’t win you the match and certainly doesn’t beat his better pokes.

I completely agree about Guy vs Ryu being a horrid matchup. I have a Ryu who I play all the time and the only way to win is to bait him all the time. If he pokes with c .mk, or solar plexus, and AA every jump in, its pretty much impossible to get in/knockdown. I’d say its atleast 6/4, even 7/3 for Ryu.

I meant you use the cr.mk from a distance, not to just attack him, so that if he dashes into it it will either beat his move or be too early in which case you press all three punches and you get a free ultra 2.
I didn’t mean on wakeup, although if you keep a your distance it could be used against his wakeup too i guess.

These Setups may be useful;
1a. for Ryu, Ken and Akuma:
When Ryu does Tatsu, as a mix up, use Crouching Low Punch. This will juggle Ryu. When Ryu is in the air to cross under Dash Quickly, to Dash in front of him Dash Late.
b. If you decide to use Crouching High Punch to counter Tatsu, if you jump forward you can cross up Ryu with Medium Kick.
c. If you decide to use Crouching Medium Punch to counter Tatsu, you can combo into RunSlide and you will be on the other side of Ryu. This is a Great Ultra 2 setup. Note; you can also use RunSlide Setup against Blanka’s forward ball, Honda’s headbutt, Cammy’s Drill, Bison’s Drill, Jump-ins etc…

Try these in Training Mode. Record Ryu doing Tatsu and see if these work for you.

Okay, I’m seriously going to get off my butt today and add all of the new match up details over the last month or so. Expect the update sometime before 5:00 PM EST.

I’ve started working on my Fei Long write up, so hopefully, I’ll have it ready before the end of the weekend. I had a few notes written down for the Dee Jay match up, but I can’t seem to find them.

not so ninja [e]dit:

I had a little trouble updating the thread this time because I wasn’t sure where I should be putting certain pieces of information. In the future, I’ll be lumping “Shenanigans” and “Setups” together. I left out some things that were posted after the last update. They didn’t seem important or were recycled information. If I did miss anything significant, please let me know.

I suppose since I have nothing better to do im going in the lab to find stuff about each character (Punishes specifically). I’ll edit this post as I continue on tonight (maybe an hour or two of testing).

E Honda: Everyones favorite matchup (sarcasm).
Headbutts:
Fullscreen for if theyre spamming:
Heavy Headbutt - Runslide under, runslide back to hit | Runslide under, ex hozanto to hit | Runslide under, ex hozanto into ultra (no fadc if hondas headbutt’s arbourne, thats rare though) (corner only)
Medium headbutt - Go for runslide under. If theyre heavy you’ll go under, if medium you’ll connect for a safejump/ex flip/shenangans/ect
Light headbutt - Same as medium

Wakeup options (Hondas knockeddown after runslide.
Safejump - Best option. Jump mk. Beats ex splash, ex headbutt, headbutt (all), splash (all), supercombo and ultra

Antiairs:
Non crossup
Stand roundhouse - best option. Beats everything i’ve tried sofar clean any distance
Izuna drop - 2nd best. Beats everything clean, does big damage, but harder to use on reaction. Maybe tied with 1st.
Alternatives in best to last - nuetral jump fierce and roundhouse, jab, fierce, crouch strong and mk.
Crossup
crouch mk - Best option. almost only thing that works
nuetral jump izuna - good alternative

M Bison
Scissors: These things are hell… possibly worse than hondaheadbutts.
Prediction - If you think they’ll throw one out, you can counter (h)it with nuetral jump mk, crouch jab, crouch mk, mk tatsu, ex tatsu and ex flipgrab. I wouldn’t reccoment any of these unless neccessary.
The best thing to do is stay just out of short scissor range (if possible). If he lk scissors, punish with either the ff chain, or my prefered target combo elbow ex elbow (for stun). If he mk or hk scissors, punish with ff chain into elbow, ultra, spin, whatever. Because of that, its footsies time! YAY! Edit to come with success/failure.
Footsies = pretty successful
Weapons of choice: Stand fierce (beats or trades (spacing specific) well against mk, hk, cr mp). Stand mk (beats or trades against mk, hk, and cr mp)

Im gonna keep editing this post… If anyone wants a specific character/move tested, lemme know

Thought I would post this up. Cl. roundhouse can connect with a hit or on block against Gouken while he is crouching. It doesn’t leave him standing so no Bushin Chain. However, you can do his Target Combo after a successful hit. If he gets hit while he is standing there is a specific link that can only be done on Gouken and 3 other characters in the game(Balrog, DeeJay, Zangief). cl. roundhouse, st. fierce, st. strong and you can follow up with either Run/Slide or ex Shoulder. If you are in the corner you can fadc into Ultra 1 after ex Shoulder for additional damage.

Also found out after a counter hit cr. jab or cr. strong you can connect a cl. roundhouse. Don’t know yet if it’s character specific, but I know it’s easier on some then others.

That combo works on sagat and I think abel too mate, I think I landed it on guy but I’m not sure, might have to double check that one.
Can cl.roundhouse connect on any other characters while crouching?

I think the problem with this is that during Gouken’s crouching hitstun, the cl.roundhouse will whiff… So you can’t do jump in attack> cl.roundhouse.

The best use for this that I can think of is using cl.roundhouse when frame trapping Gouken. Definite will practice cr.LP>s.HK after a safe jump to make it part of my game.

Anyone have tips for Juri? I got so damn salty after playing my friend’s Juri because of how annoying her damned hitbox is.

^^ i did a write up on juri, i dont know if its posted on the first page or not though

Nope it isn’t, but I’ll look through the thread.

Yeah that’s what I was implying when I posted this.

When you say manny do you mean me? Cause thats my first name lol haha. Anyway I have been catching up on all this sweet new info and I can’t wait to test it online or at my locals. Thanks for the info.

I was thinking about something like this recently. I thought I landed cl.RH on crouching opponent’s wake-up during a ranked battle and then hit training to explore further but thinking back now I must have done the testing with Ryu and it really wasn’t working so I assumed the opponent must have been standing when i initially noticed it.

Given the above info would it not be fair to assume that in the mentioned match-ups that this move could be used as a viable meaty(bearing in mind 3 active frames as per eventhubs frame data) on wake-up and reset?

There… theoryfighter ramble over. I’ll give it a go after work and get back with my findings.

She isn’t to bad a match-up… with her projectiles being such short range she has no threats whatsoever from full screen. There’s also a simple dynamic of her fireball windup that fucks her against guy.

She can store it. immediate release high, or immediate release low…

if you look at your run->slide and your bushinflip each completely defeats a high or low fireball respectively… and both beat storing one…

If she’s trying to work fireballs… you can guess each time on reaction with roughly 75% chance (that’s before you factor in what you’ve learned or your opps patterns and tendencies.)

Other than that don’t let her jump at you… and your up close game should take care of the rest. You should know which pinwheel version should be punished by which of guys options. The rest is standard fare for the most part.

At least that’s how I try to do it. I’m more conservative than some tho.

Just recently had a match against a Ryu with Guy. Went for elbow drops, he nullified them with crouching MK. Went for cross up (probably after throw) he again uses crouching mk it does him nothing. After thousands of matches I’ve had, many against Ryu, this guy knew how to expose Guy. Yeah it’s a good thing not a lot of Ryu players know this cheap technique, but damn is this game broke, and especially Guy.

Why shouldn’t I also switch to Ryu now? Someone give me a good reason.

Cuz Guy kicks fuckin ass.

What klutch said

Quitter.
Nah I’m just kidding, maybe if you make a video of it or something then capcom might patch it?
I’ve never had to deal with this so I can only imagine how annoying it is.
