The Super Guy Match-Up Thread: Check First Posts! (Updated: 01-24-2011)

Works as long as he doesn’t have Ultra 1 available. Still great news.

Vs Gen:

Gen has complete aerial dominance in nearly all of his matchups. Going air to air against Gen is just plain stupid unless youre planning on doing an Izuna. Period. His Crane j.hp and j.hk beat out so many things its not even funny. Having played Gen (currently use him often as one of my secondaries…but then again that goes for 80% of the cast lol), I know that Gen is all about mixups. Gen doesnt really have any ground BnB’s outside of Mantis st.mk > hands. All of Gen’s game comes from starting with jump-ins. If you take away his jump in, all he can really do is (M)st.mk xx hands. Gen has some pretty decent pokes which include (M) st.mk, (M) cr.mp, (M) cr.mk, © cr.mp, and (M) cr.hk. Something to remember though is that Gen cannot beat Guy with pokes alone. A few other things to note:

Gen has (in my opinion) the best crossup game out of the entire cast. His (M) j.mk and his © j.mk are very ambiguous and when used in conjuction with each other, create a crossup game that is very hard to defend against. From his crossups he has an incredible amount of options:

 • can combo/blockstring into hands
 • can mixup with © st.mp (two hit overhead)
 • can combo/blockstring into © roll for safe pressure / chip
 • if he hits you with the crossover, can combo into © cr.lk, which will put you in a juggle state where he can reset / super / U1

the list goes on and on but those are the most common things you will see (i would estimate it will be one of those 4 things 90% of the time)

 • note: unless the gen has good reactions, you will likely see a hit confirm into © cr.lk if he opts to use that. also note that © cr.lk is -7 on block

Gen also has a pretty good anti air game. Gekiro/EX Gekiro (his dragon kick thing), are reason enough to not jump in, on top of this he also has © cr.hk (which is amazing) and © st.hk (two hits, resets). Jumping in on Gen isnt a good idea unless its a safe jump. Just sayin.

Gen can throw crossups on Guy all day long because his © j.mk has such an enormous hitbox that it will actually either 1) be safe and no one will get hurt or 2) he’ll hit you with his back leg.

Dont worry about Oga (his wall dive / ceiling dive). its easy to determine which way to block. If he comes off his wall, just block normally, if he comes off your wall, just block like you would a crossup (basically whichever wall he comes off of, hold the opposite direction). If he DOES land an Oga on you, you better believe its going to hurt. The LEAST he will do is follow up with HK Gekiro. He can also reset you, link into © super, or © U1, link into (M) super, or (M) U1, or link into (M) Super > ©/(M) U1 (680 damage on someone who is full health ).

Gen can stop his Gekiro short, fall to the ground, and © U1 you before you land and it will all combo. Im tellin you, dont jump in lol.

Now that we know most of what Gen can (and will) do, here is what we can do:

Guy can AA all of Gen’s jump ins (provided theyre not a crossup) with cr.mp / cr.mk. The only move that will beat our cr.mp is Gen’s © j.hk. Cr.mk will keep you safe from all of them (including Oga). This is a match where we should only be applying pressure in short bursts. Continuous Run/stop pressure will get you killed here by a random gekiro if you throw our anything after the “stop”. Apply pressure, get a small life lead, then lay off a little bit. Gen has a hard time approaching most characters and Guy is no exception. If there is space between you, he cant safely jump in on you without fear of our cr.mk. The only other option he really has at this point is (M) st.mk pokes with a hands buffered in, or Oga (which is beat by both cr.mp and cr.mk. cr.mk is safer though). When you get a knockdown on him, bait the hell out of Gekiro. You get a free combo of choice afterwards, but be careful ! i cannot stress enough how important it is to be patient when baiting out a Gekiro. If he throws one and you block it, STAY CROUCH BLOCKING !!! I guarantee he will throw out a second kick off his gekiro as late as possible to either try and catch you and continue on with it, or to throw off your timing. Just please be patient !. Force him to come to you, bait and punish as hard as you can (cr.mp~bushin is a really nice punish for a whiffed Gekiro). If he throws out an Oga and you block it, be very careful if he has any meter. He can frame trap CH you with an EX Gekiro after a blocked Oga. If he gets a knockdown on you, just try your best to block the crossups, and crouch tech everything after the initial crossup (even if you get hit, he might try to go for the © st.mp overhead for a mixup, your crouch tech will beat that easy money). Lastly, for those of you who are intermediate/advanced players, Gekiro is considered airborn almost immediately, meaning you can jump in with an EX Izuna and catch him with it, or conversely, you can TK EX Izuna when right next to him on his wakeup, A la Tsukimiya. This really mindfucks them and if you can catch them with it enough times, they will be afraid to throw it out on wakeup. Just something to note.

Gen is a difficult matchup because the LARGE majority of people lack experience against a good Gen player. Just play smart, and remember that Gen has a really difficult time if he cant jump in. Something else that also helps is that Gen players (like a lot of players) have a lot of tendancies. Some will really like working in that overhead mixup, some wont use it at all.

As with all matches, its best to play the PLAYER, not the CHARACTER. Feel out the opponent. Purposely drop a small combo to see if he mashes crouch tech or if he mashes a reversal (Gekiro). One of the single most important things in playing this game competitively is learning how to download and read an opponent quickly. If you cant determine what a player likes to do by the end of the first match, you need to work on it more (providing you play best of 3 or higher sets). Always be analyzing the opponent, always be reading him. It doesnt matter if he hits you with whatever it is, but take note of it and learn from it.

Hope this Gen write-up has helped

This thread is still Epic I see. Was wondering when Arcade Edition hits consoles, are you going to replace some of the match up info with AE info since some points might be different due to balance changes to Guy and the rest. I’m sure most people will be playing the latest version so they probably wouldn’t mind if some parts got replaced with more relevant info if needed, but adding an AE section is also an option I guess. Just something to think about for when the time comes, which will probably be next year lol.

I’ll update all of my posts when AE comes out

TK EX Izuna drop works nicely on hop happy blankas.

k1 ur awesome for the community. big up. one thing i dont know even if ive been playing gen in sf4 can we punish blocked up oga with bushin chain?

or it is to safe? which i dont think. or is gen crouching on recovery?

can you write some infos on akuma? please ive been RAPED by an akuma i was pissed. couldnt deal with demon flips and i had nothing to punish never he was always blocking or cr.hp my cross ups grr been trying OS run mk .hk he wasnt teleporting when i was doing these.spamming s.rh ill take a look on the first page if i can see something thanks again.

Any suggestions for a decent punish to Guiles cr.hk online? I know its 20 frames, but I always seem to get counter hit out of anything I try an do other than tatsu or ultra.

crouching jab is your next best option. It’s not only fast but it leads into other links.

block the first kick and focus the second. you get a free FA plus follow up combo

@Bushinryu

i did a write up for akuma already, check it yo

Could anyone do an in-depth write of the fei matchup… I find it really hard , fei keeps guy out really well and turtling against him isn’t really a great option he seems to be able to push you to the corner pretty fast. His corner game seems a lot scarier than Guys and he is also able to get out of guys corner pressure pretty easily.

Ill do an in-depth write up for Fei today

VS Cammy:

FUCKING HIR0 LMAO! Thanks for posting this vid but completely ducking xbl. Quacker.

Oh look someone with an ego, because This is K1 lost and got destroyed I must show this to all the Guy players on SRK to prove to them that K1 is nothing but a mediocre Guy player. Whoo! You’ve shown us the light and I’ll just stick to watching the Japanese Guy players alongside Combofiend because known of them ever get owned or have a bad match here or there.

:coffee:

Please understand the circumstances of the video before commenting like a 'tard

That was a lols video. I dropped so many combos :frowning:

- is my Cammy vs Ed Ma’s Guy. Ed does a great job playing me. I had to resort to a lot of random tricks etc to beat him.

Still looks like a troll vid to me, especially from the looks of the few comments, and description of the video. Granted yeah he got owned, pretty sure everyone in their days of SF have had their asses handed to them.

i’m sure This is K-1 doesnt need random jobbers defending him

He had some solid gameplay there. Didn’t even know he played Guy either O.o

Holy hell please get another xbox already.

Fei Long is a solid character in both this game and in SF4, even though a lot of people slept on him. It’s just unfortunate the tools that Fei has are just better than those that Guy has. At the very least, Fei doesn’t have a fireball, so the battle becomes extremely ground-based. However, Fei wins the footsie war because of his better pokes (cr.MP, cr.HP, st.HP, Rekkas) and safe offensive pressure. LP Rekka is -4 on block, but smart Fei players will space it properly (-3 on block). Not having a 3-frame normal really hurts Guy here. I’m sure most Guy players will agree with you that the Fei Long match up is tough.

Since I played Fei near the end of SF4, I’d try to make a very specific write up for this match up, but I’m not sure if I have enough time. I’ve been working on my Ken write up for awhile, and I’m still nowhere near done.

Eh, I’m not really sure what to think of people posting this video. It just shows K1 getting mauled like there’s no tomorrow, and it really doesn’t help this thread in any way. I’m sure everybody on the Guy forums knows that K1 isn’t exactly the best Guy player in the world, and we all have our own opinions about his gameplay. However, he has provided a lot of useful info and is a regular poster here. We don’t have a MrSNK or SaBrE or somebody of equal status to drop by occasionally. We work with what we have, and we work on our own. Personally, I wish D’Nyc3 would post a little more, but I know he mentioned that he’s been busy with the school semester starting.

It is refreshing, though, to see that I’m not the only Guy player that gets destroyed sometimes (or, all the time, in my case).
