I see Capcom as a drunken father trying to rehabilitate but never quite getting there and downing another bottle of whiskey before collapsing on the sofa.
ASW being the caring mother who doesn’t get the praise she deserves for all the hard work.
I play always more than 1 character, but I usually always try Chun Li first and then see if I like someone else. I still remember the first SFIV video I saw of Chun and that made me wanna keep messing around with her:
Well the actual story mode is 100% taken from BlazBlue, only with much less fights. V-Trigger is clearly inspired by KI’s Instinct and even if everyone calls V-Reversal “alpha counter” it’s actually closer to GG’s Dead Angle Attack for its inputs.
There are probably many other things they took from other fighters, but they usually did it worse than the original.
I agree with this. It honestly baffles me how Capcom honestly believes that casuals will go find tutorials and in-depth analysis of how to play their character on Youtube or Twitch…when casuals aren’t even remotely hardcore like that.
I tried doing that for Blazblue CT and it just didn’t click because I always had to go do countless play by plays of how the combo was supposed to work or the intricacies of the actual game. So when they finally released Blazblue CS and added in a Trial Mode with a Sampler later on the line, it was made alot more obvious what you are supposed to do and how.
It was the same thing in DOA5, fixed in DOA5U and pretty much became a standard in fighting games after that. So to see SFV, the game that was supposed to bring casuals in, basically say “Fuck you, go look online” for a few months until they released trial…and before that have a half-assed “tutorial”, it just screams of barely giving a fuck.
I’m not even talking about gameplay to be honest, I’m talking about features and modes from the ground up. The actual gameplay is the only thing that Capcom got right with SF5.
I’m sorry, I felt the same way originally, that at least they got the game play right. Yet the more I play, the more noticeable the input delay is, and that basic footsies and punishes are gimped for certain characters more than others.
What people keep calling shimmy, is not necessarily real shimmy at all, it’s doing shit that abuses moves with 4 frames of start up that lead to huge damage, like Ken’s so called b.st.mp, chain to st.hp to whatever Ken damn well pleases and doing it outside of throw distance. I agree with PR Balrog. Everyone is playing the same way, no matter which character that use, as long as they have a 3 frame jab and some abusiveable garbage above.
Then you add in the lag online, the fact that PC users can have less input lag, and that you need to keep a PS3 stick or PS4 stick in legacy mode (if you can switch it in to PS3 mode) just to try to trim down the input delay, and the gameplay ends up feeling completely fucked.
It’s especially important when anyone wants to take the next step in skill. Good tutorials teach you the basics of the character/game. Great tutorials help you get better at the mid level. Things like show hit/hurtboxes, frame data, optimal combos, w/e that help push players beyond just being casual players.
DOA5U(not sure if it was in DOA5) has one of the best training menus I’ve seen. You can easily do a single attack and not only get how much damage or whether it is a high, low or mid(even in the air which can confuse people pretty badly), but even give you frame data for EVERY ATTACK on top of telling you what type of attack it is(It doesn’t just tell you + frames, it also tells you - frames even if it’s not a block.)
I honestly expected something similar for SFV to have a system like this…nope, you gotta download an APP for it.
Even though I agree with the gist of what you are saying(that no amount of tutorials will help someone who doesn’t want to get better), as the other 2 stated, it DOES help immensely for those who do want to get to the next level.
And for those people, the best tutorials that teaches them the in’s and outs of the game(and if you want to go further, how to play a fighting game in general).
